All the renter will want is a copy of your passport.

The Police will want to see your licence if you get stopped.

Most people pay between 800 and 1000 for a weeks rental of a scooter

I personally used a guy who hires bikes on central road between Beach and second.

1000 deposit and I had no problems on returning the bike.

I personally bought my own helmet from the Carrefour for about TB 300 as the rented one looked very scummy and had no visor.

If it flies, floats or fucks - it will be cheaper to rent !

Get yourself an international drivers permit, these are usually easy to get in all European countries, just do a google search for your country.

Make sure your travel insurance covers you for medical, should the worst happen - It is unlikely you will get any kind of liability insurance.

Then let these guys know when you are arriving and when/ where you would like it deliered http://kessayamotorbikerentals.com/

They are also a board member and I doubt you will find a bad review of his services.

EDIT: It is unlikely you will be stopped by the police if you always wear a crash helmet and follow the road signs

If you are going to Walking Street to get pissed then leave the bike at home.Plenty of dead pissed falangs/Thais who did not take that advice.

All of the above information is very good advice.

I just want to add a little bit to it:

I never needed an international license.

Nobody in Thaliand follows any rules in traffic - never ever, not even falangs (which includes myself).

I've been many times to southern thailand and allways rented a scooter the minute I landed, but seeing the traffic in Patts, I decided to use the bath bus which is a lot cheaper and more secure.

You can still get a (motobike-)taxi to go to places where a song thaeo is harder to find.

i never toke my license cuz its lame man when u pulled of and see how they compare u to locals u get fined and they wont plus u tip the cop so dont waste time in police station ,

Like the OP, I too don't drink, and with a bit of caution I feel reasonably secure driving a motorbike in Patts. One best be constantly aware of what's going on and expect the unexpected...never be far from the brakes as you'll soon need them in a hurry.

As to where to rent in Pattaya, I`ve used Kessaya twice now and have nothing but the highest regard for both him and the way he does business.

1000 baht a week? Meh, he charges 2000 baht a month!

(+1000 baht security deposit, and he delivers the bike to my motel as well.) http://kessayamotorbikerentals.com/

While the baht buses are an excellent way to get around, the mobility on demand of having one's own transportation provides unparalleled flexibility 24/7.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

TM

renting a motorbike is a very good idea especialy in pattaya because it is the fasted way to get around ( even faster than the bathbus who get stuk in the traffic)

I pay 138 bath a day including an extra insurance in case of collision ( which is never included in the obligatory POLOBO insurance)

cfr www.motorbike-station.com for more details
