A Thought About Common Thai Folk

Recommended Posts

I'm sitting here in my very comfortable accommodation up on Pratumnak hill.

I'm on the second floor. I have a nice balcony at the rear of the apartment overlooking temporary digs for Thai construction workers and their families.

It's night. The rain is pissing down. Thunder, lighting, complete deluge.

These workers live in a system of shacks with rickety frames and bits of corrugated iron on dirt floors. Whole families manage to exist under these conditions.

Earlier today, looking down from the balcony, when it was fine, the families seemed to co-exist nicely. In fact I thought they looked happier than many falangs I know. In particular, their children seemed very happy and well cared for.

Now I see what the rain is doing to their community. Poor bastards. The incessant rain is making their lives bloody miserable.

all their places are flooded or leaking massively.

I think these workers get about 200^ baht per day.

Tomorrow they will get up and make the best of it and carry on.

It's stories like this that really bring clarity to our lives.

Too often people bitch about the small things in life whilst these people live with barely nothing and are probably a lot happier than many of us.

I don't know if they are happier, but a lot of them certainly do put on a brave face. I think a lot of us like to assume that they are happier because it makes it easier for us to get on with our business of mongering. The real fact is we are often taking advantage of their plight to satisfy our own sexual perversions.

For the record, I am pointing a finger at myself too.

Ditto. My ex was the same way until I married her, then suddenly she changed and nothing was good enough for her. Princess on a pea. I suppose bitching is only something you do when you can afford to.

I've also seen people from my hotel balcony living in metal shacks. I'd observe them daily and don't know how they managed to live in such conditions.

BGs are often paid thousands of baht per customer and earn more than some doctors in LOS. I wouldn't compare them with the laborers living in tin shacks.

The richest people are the most miserable. Generally speaking.

Money does not buy happiness, it only buys the illusion of joy.

The most important virtue in life is having love. At least that's the conclusion I've arrived to.

By your logic, if a BG makes more money than a doctor then that makes her better off than a doctor? A lot of these girls bring in some pretty good money, but I'm guessing that the money is really the only good part of being a prostitute. STD's, abusive customers, undesirable customers (poor hygiene, fat, old, ugly, sexually demanding, etc.), poor work environment (loud farang music, competition between girls, back-stabbing between girls), and whatever else they put up with. I am not convinced that a lot of these girls are having the time of their lives simply because they can make good money. I am convinced that we would like to believe they are better off because we are supporting them. This means we are actually helping them to better their lives. This in turn helps us justify our actions. And again, I am just as guilty as anyone. All I can really say in my own defense is that I try my best to be fair to them, but I hope I don’t stick my head in the sand and ignore the reality of the situation.
