precautions to take in pattaya

I'm visiting pattya shortly.I've heard that there were incidences that some foreigners were drugged as below :

Thailand in general is very safe (compared to other places) but Pattaya is less so.

 

That said if you keep your wits about you then its no different to your home town probably.

 

You are more likely to fall foul of pot holes in ther road or fall off your motorbike than anything else.

 

BTW I have lived in Thailand many years now and that "2 Germans" story is a new one on me. Can you tell us the source.

The date rape drug Royphonol is probably more commonly used in the west, although i have heard of a couple of cases here in Patts, involving ladyboys and Indian guys, Never heard of the two Germans case and ive been here three years ? 7 on and off !!

Never walk around always taxi; baht bus or motorbike. Normally has something to do with being pissed. I’ve never had a problem here but that don’t mean to be complaisant.

Pattaya is an obvious refuge for many non Thai criminals and con men hiding from authorities in Europe, Australia or wherever. Simple rules. Don't get blind drunk. Don't do drugs. Be sceptical on any new falang "friends"...until they checkout over time. In fact just do the "smart" things you once did back in your home town.

Your best bet is to avoid freelancers and the girls on the beach, Taking girls who work in bars is perfectly ok..

Just read the news clip about this and one thing stood out at the end.

 

"About 75 to 100 tourists are found dead every year in Pattaya, some from an overdose, heart attack, fights and some still in bizarre circumstance. I guess it’s the price to pay for cheap sex in a land where sexual exploitation is the main product to sell."

 

I don't know what percentage this is considering all the farangs that visit Pattaya each year, but I suspect it is very low.

 

Just keep your wits about you and keep all these little snippets of information in your head for future reference.

Interesting read,I live in Bangkok and have never had a problem visiting/living here in the last 20 years.It just goe's to show though that you should never become too complacent about where you are.Your behaviour is a major factor whether you become one of these statistics or not and the over drinking definately knocks you off your guard.I've probably been eyed as a target at some time and never even realised it.

Yeah, I agree..unless you are blitzed out of your mind and money hanging out of your pockets you will be perfectly fine. I guess I have been pretty luck though, I have been 4 times and each time I let my girl carry my money...its so much easier, she knows how much to tip, when things are expensive and so on. Sure, they will buy a drink for their friends..but they take care of you as well.....Honestly..get to know the girl first...I usually only travel with about 10000baht a night and even though I am hammered sometimes (all the time) I can still watch my money and they do great..I think they feel its their money and most of the time they are shocked that you trust them...I would not do this with a freelancer though.

I've been about 8 or 9 times, and I never had any trouble, infact never seen any aggro either, apart from once, just once and two blokes exchanged insults as one walked past a bar in Soi 8.

I trouble does happen of course, like the stuff mentioned, but its all got to be kept in perspective.

 

How about places like, say Magaluf, Aya napa in cyprus, Faleraki, or any of the Med resorts packed with Drunk yobs ?

I dare say them places you'll see your fair share of stabbings, stories of rapes etc..

And thats' not even mentioning the places here at home in the UK that are crazy on a Sat night..

 

Infact, the bloke I meet up with over in Patts, who goes out in Sept for six months, is looking forward to getting back over next week....he lives round the corner in liverpool where that kid was shot dead..

 

Anyway, where ever you go,how you act, use your head etc, being a bit 'streetwise' with a bit of common sense, will usually see you right IMO...

Did anyone notice that this article is a wee bit old. It was originally publishesd in December 2001.

 

The author doesnt name a single, victim, hotel, source, witness, police officer etc. He calls Marine a Beer bar. He doesnt state where he got any of his facts or stats from. He mentions an interpol operation that ran for several months based on a few dead felang. Interpol have much better things to do. He states that police combed the areas where the guys had been found dead or unconcuious (thier hotels according to another part of te "article") and they then visited these bars undercover. He's contradicting himself.

 

If a proper news journo had submitted such utter trash to thier editor i think they'd be writing pet obituaries. If a third rate fiction/sex writer had submitted the same thing to a minor and very much unheard of e-zine then they might add it to thier site. Look at some of his other amazing articles like 'Stop Clown Porno". Simply rivetting!!

 

In other words, and in my most humble opinion i believe said article to be a very poorly written, poorly researched piece of gutter fiction.

Anytime you mix alcohol and someplace worth being there will always be some jerks who can't handle it and spoil someone's day with their foolishness. Could happen just as easily in Paris or Sydney or Gary, Indiana.

Since I live in Los Angeles, Pattaya is EXTREMELY safe in comparison.

 

I see/hear more crime per night in LA (even in nice neighborhoods we have helicopters and gunshots) that I ever saw/heard in a month in Pattaya.

 

But stupid is as stupid does and a drunk throwing money around always gets what they ask for.

 

A drunk driving a motorcycle is by far the most dangerous thing in Pattaya. To both themselves and others.

Mostly it just comes down to common sense.

 

Patts is an adult playground and there are dangers, but personally i feel in more immediate danger on the streets back home in england.

 

Stay away from drugs regardless of what you do at home and keep your wits about you and you should be pretty safe.

 

The number of totally snookered people I see staggering around the beach road and Walking Street is staggering and i'm honestly amazed there isn't far more incidents.

 

Freelancers are a higher risk, but still pretty low.

Ironically, some of the best ways to get drugged, robbed or attacked is to engage in cheap-charlie activities such as picking up women from Beach Road, arguing aggressively with Baht Bus Drivers or others over stupid amounts of money, or stay in a 300 Baht a night dives with little or no security. Act sensibly, avoid being aggressive no matter what the provocation and stay within well-populated areas at night reduces the risks significantly.
