Why don't you start with telling us what you think of this.

A couple of thoughts:

1. I was going to Las Vegas for years before they decided to try to clean it up and make it "family friendly." They put in amusement parks behind hotels on the Strip and tried to sell Las Vegas as a place to take your wife and kids. It went over like a fart in church. Within 2 years, the amusement parks were shut down and their rides sat rusting away, as they changed the slogan to the very successful "What Happens In Vegas, Stays in Vegas." Adult playgrounds are what they are. They can try to change them, but, when that doesn't fly (and it won't), they're going to go back to what has worked all along.

2. Given the substantial news coverage of the quickly eroding beach -- which I think sucks anyway! -- what is going to draw people to Pattaya once the beach is virtually non-existent? Maybe I missed something on my last trip, but I can't see tourists coming on droves to go to Mike's Mall. There are ways to occupy your down time that are listed in numerous other threads, but would anyone actually go to those places/do those things as their primary focus of their vacation?!?

I remember very well when they tried to 'change' the image of Vegas into a family friendly destination. Compared to when I visited Vegas in the late 70's and early 80's, there certainly is more things for kids and families to do in Vegas now compared to then. But I also noticed that they eventually went back to Vegas' 'roots' as a sin city destination.

As for the original article, I don't really see a lot of 'groundbreaking' or 'thought provoking' arguments from the author, just a brief mention of the kinds of tourists coming to thailand and that's about it. Nothing I haven't read already from the multiple 'pattaya is changing' threads here on PA lol.

The notion that the sex scene in pattaya will eventually be displaced by 'family friendly' establishments and disappear altogether is a laughable notion, considering that P4P is ingrained throughout all levels of thai society. Not to mention all the tax free P4P money that support not only the girls, but dozens of other establishments and industries that cater to the bar girls and their customers. Ain't no one gonna want to give up that cash cow. Let's also not forget the non P4P tourists who are drawn to Pattaya precisely because of its image as sin city, visiting world famous spots like Walking Street similar to tourists visiting the red light districts of Amsterdam.

As for "changing" the image and view of pattaya and thailand in general, which is something the author hints at, good luck. Many people still view thailand as a sex tourist tourist destination filled with perverted individuals. It's been that way since I was a kid, and it'll stay that way for a long time, probably forever. That's why it seems like every bloody week we get yet another sensationalized media article or fluff piece about prostitution and thailand.

The biggest irony of all is that us mongers actually have THE most open, tolerant, and appreciative views of thailand and its people than those who have never set food in the kingdom. Yes, we engage in P4P, but at the same time love the culture, the food, and many aspects of thai culture beyond P4P.

Well a lot of us do, but there is fair sized minority of expats who seem to hate everything thai, even the girls, but stick around to screw the girls they don't even like.

As far as the place changing, I haven't been hanging arouns enough years to make much of a statement on what I have observed.

From a bigger perspective the only real constant is change so I don't see how change can be to surprising.

I can tell you one thing, it will certainly change when Mr Toxin gets back, and that's a racing certainty now.

2am will be the norm for almost everywhere, no more sheesha pipes, he outlawed them last time he was in power, expect an even bigger drug war, and social reform. It was he that brought in the 2-5pm booze ban in supermarkets and 7-11's.

He will defiantly be anti UK after being kicked out of the country.

Edit.

Bringing his sister in was a masterstroke from MrT she is proving to be very popular, landslide on the cards for her, she will certainly get the popular vote, actually even I like her style, but it will all end in tears
