I don't know how much time you've got but the best itinerary would be Bangkok to Chiang Mai then bus to Chiang Rai then Chiang Khong where you'll cross the border (visa on arrival) and take the slow boat to Luang Prabang. The slow boat takes 2 days (you'll have to spend a night in Huay Xai) but the boat journey on the mekong is very pleasant and laid-back.

You can stay a few days in scenic, atmospheric Luang Prabang before heading down to Vientiane. You can stop along the way and spend a few days in Vang Vieng, a major backpacker little town where young people (most from Australia, UK and USA) drink a lot and indulge in the consumption of illicit substances.

Vientiane is a laid-back capital city but there's not much to see there. 1 or 2 days are enough. Cross the friendship bridge and you'll be in Nong Khai, Thailand, a short bus trip from Udon Thani where you can find falang style beer bars and monger. You can either catch the train for Bangers or a bus to Patts from Udon :)

Enjoy your trip, mate!

Take an airplane to Udon thani for 1500 baht . Or a bus for 600/800 baht but it's a long way . From Udon airport you

can take the minibus to the Laos border for only 200 baht . On the Laos side you have loads of taxis and tuktuks going

to Vientiane between 50 ( shared ) and 200 baht ( you can pay in baht ) .

Make shore you're at the border before 3.00 pm as the border closes at 4.00 pm and it will take an hour before all the

paperwork is done ( keep in mind you have to pay 35 us dollars to pass the border ) . You can also pay in baht but it's

a lot more expensive .

Vientiane is very relaxed compared to Pattaya . It doesn't have a lot of bars but still good to monger . Women seen to

be more beautiful in Laos also . Pick up a nice girl at the 4 floor bor pen yang bar next to Intercity hotel and she will

be happy to take you out for the night . Probably she will take you to Don chan Palace , the biggest night

club in town . Be a little bit carefull as a farang is not allowed to have sex with a Laos girl , some hotels will not

even allow a girl in your room .

Girls are happy with 1000 baht LT .

Luang prabang is worth a visit .

Back to Udon . Nok air has a flight that wil take you to Chang mai or take the bus to save some money .

In Chang mai visit the golden temple Doi sutep in the mountains and maybe the Hmong ( mountain tribes ) or Karian ( longnecks ) .

Visit the enormous night market .

Chang mai is also a relaxed city with a good atmosphere and ok to spend a few days .

Have fun .

been looking at udon and seems may be worth visting as much as laos ? is udon near chang mai ? could maybe fly from bangkok to chang mai then

get bus to udon.. that mean i would maybe get to see both chiang mai and udon. seems like 2days in each be enough.

would udon be relatively cheap.. much nightlife for bit of mongering ?

cheers for help

I have been to Udon 2 times on the way back from Laos and imo it isn't worth the visit .

A few quiet bars with mostly older expats and very few good looking ladies , not much fun .

I always have a good time visiting Vientiane , much better than Udon .

Udon is 750 km from Chang mai and that's almost the same distance as from Bangkok to Udon ,

not really a relaxing bustour better take a plane for a few baht more .

  • 2 weeks later...

Went from Patts to Nongkhai on air bus (around 500 TBH), takes 12 hours

Nongkhai bus station to Thai Friendship bridge across the Mekong river to Laos

Nongkhai has a good expat scene and a few nice bars along their Walking Street (very small compared to Patts). Good food and beer bars along the Mekong river frontage

Laos border will cost you around 20 or 30 dollars for a 1 month single entry visa (whole page of passport) and get a bus or taxi from there to Vientiene (yakes about 45 mins)

Rather enjoyed Vientiene - will go back again, from there you can get bus to Luang Prabang or whereever else you want to go to in Laos. Beer Laos very good, light and dark available. In fact the dark beer laos as close as you are going to get to an English bitter in SE asia at a reasonable price

'I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day. '

    • For those that don't know, I did Friday meetings before many years ago,  I feel like we are missing a regular meeting for members,  I am aware guys meet at PA affiliated bars. But I want to start meeting people again, I'm inviting the guys following my YouTube also.

The meetings is a chance to get to meet each other,  I plan to be at every meeting, I also have Dean from Dive bar that has offered to help out with a crawl after.
The meetings will be  Monday  6 pm - 8 pm each week.  (The improvised bar crawl will commence at 8 p.m.  Dean will make his own plans for that.)

Due to low numbers of people in town, I will start the meetings in our bars to help our girls and managers, please check back often incase things are changed.  I will be sharing the love around town later, but Soi 6 is first on my list (including bars that are friendly competition)
If bar owners want us to have a meeting at their bar,  they need to have a minimum of 10 girls.  I'm not dragging people to empty bars for favours.
Please help us invite other members, it takes a while to get momentum.
Monday 6 pm - 8pm  (then bar crawl after)
      21st March - Playpen Soi 6
28th March - Night wish bar Soi 6
4th April - Toy Box bar Soi 6
      11th April - Repent Soi 6
18th April - where angels play Soi 6
25th April -  (next bar we have open)

2nd May - (next bar we have open)
      9th May - Cooters bar soi 6
16th May - Hot shots bar Soi 6
23rd May - (next bar we have open)
      30th of May - Lust soi 6
      6th of June - Illuzion
13th of June - (next bar we have open)

I look forward to meeting people again.
