Free water in hotels.

Mr David

Recommended Posts

Every time I go to LOS I get the shits at some point. I know for the first week I hit the beer etc and this certainly does not help but was just wondering about the complimentary water that gets left in the rooms. Is this safe to drink? Someone else mentioned it in another thread saying he was sure it was the water that made him ill and it got me thinking that perhaps it might be better to stay away from the bottle with the easy pull lids and stay with stuff bought from the supermarket.

Any thoughts?

If your not sure splash out B10 for a liter and half in the 7/11 and use the hotel supply for your teeth cleaning

Nothing to do with the water IMO. More likely it is the different food - and the beers etc that upsets your stomach. The water is absolutely fine.

Everyone has the right to my opinion

The water's fine, but everyone does not have the same digestive tract tollerance.

Way back whan I was younger, I stayed the night at a Korean BG's room (newbie in Korea), I wake up in the middle of the night thristy and remember seeing a big plastic tub of water in the kitchen as I entered her room, so I dip a cup in there and drink away. She wakes up later and I ask if the water in the plastic tub is safe to drink coz I drank a cup full in the earling morning, she laughs wildly and says that's the water she washes her feet in. I'm thinking oh great, anyday I'm gonna have some weird illness; nothing happend and my co-workers say I probably could drink from horse's trough and not get sick. I guess I got a cast iron stomach.

I have been drinking the water from the tap here for over seven years without any ill effect. As others have said, its most unlikely that this is the reason for your problem, more likely change of diet to more spicy food?

To be honest I think it is virtually impossible to avoid contact with the local water.

Even if you drink bottled water as soon as you have ice with anything or eat out you will almost certainly come in contact with the local water.

I have never had a upset stomach to the point where it is a problem but then I am very picky about where I eat and avoid ‘street meat’ vendors like the plague.

I have gotten sick in LOS a few times but it is mainly Flu like symptoms or red eye that are more the result of going mad and doing too much eating, drinking and shagging and not getting enough sleep.

The bottle water in the hotels is safe. Most food and drinks in the LOS are safe, I always eat all the street food I can, never had any problems.

The change in weather and the excessive lifestyle make you more receptive for illnesses, so go a little slower the first days.

The bottled water is fine. Stop worrying about ridiculous things.

Who is worrying? As I said in the post it was mentioned by someone else who blamed the bottled free water and just thought I'd ask here if anyone else had anything to chip in on the subject or had any problems.

Last time I was over I was ill with constant diarrhoea for 4 days and consider that far from ridiculous.

Thanks to everyone else who took the time to write informative and constructive replies.

Personally, I would steer clear of the complimentary water, especially those provided in the glass bottles with the keyring tops. Water provided in sealed plastic bottles are probably less riskier but at 7B a pop from 7/11 why would you bother?

It could well be that the runs that you experience is attributed to ice made from dodgy water or perhaps water residue on salads / vegetables etc.

I would think it much more likely you got a little local water in you when showering. Bottled water should be OK.

I too use those water machines, 1 baht for a litre if memory serves me right. I mainly use for brushing my teeth and the odd cup of coffee in the room. I wouldn't imagine any hotel is refilling any bottles as water is so cheap to buy.

The most you protect yourself, the most risk you take !

Just get your stomac used to any kind of water and you'll be safe where ever you go, what ever you drink.

If thais can drink tap water, why couldn't you ?

Well, for a perfectly good reason - it's full of bacteria ... bad ones.

The thai's have spent years drinking the stuff and built up a resistance to all but the worst of the bugs and even then they regularly get the shits too .... why do you think so many of them drink bottled water?

You don't need to go overboard with your fear of water, but likewise don't go drinking out of the nearest gutter in order to try and build up your resistance - just be smart. I don't mind using the tapwater for teeth brushing as I'm not swallowing the stuff and I use mouthwash afterwards and this has served me well for many years - I'm not about to drink a liter of the stuff when I can get RO water or bottled water for mere cents.

What makes the 7/11 water better or safer than the complimentary water from the hotel, seeing as it most likely comes from similar bottling facilities and methods?

Just have antibiotics handy, and some immodium, when you do contract something - the immodium plugs you back up, the antibiotic kills whatever bacteria you caught (amoxicillin works most times).

Its a rare trip where you don't get the shits on an Asian holiday. Always pack some Imodium or and anti diarrhoea pills. Now I know how bloody useful those hoses that come as standard with most asian toilets are. Also remember to wash your hands regularly, and well. Sure drink bottled water but don't freak out too much, there are vastly more dangerous diseases than a dose of the runs.....

Not really worth packing it from home... 20 or 40 baht 4 pills at any Pharmacy.

Those toilet hoses sure do come in handy, especially when you have the runs.

I bought some imodium tablets last trip and still have plenty left. I'll be taking them back over with me to have on stand by when the usual stomach bug hits. Also i don't recall seeing many Thais drinking from the taps

I haven't had any problems with the bottled water with the key ring tops, or any other kind. I think it's pretty safe.

I don't drink from the tap but I do brush my teeth with it, a way of allowing your body to get used to the local water without fully drinking it.

I usually get extra bottles of water from 7-11 because I sweat a lot and the two complimentary bottles are not enough to keep me hydrated.

I do a fair amount of o/s travel and have just gotten used to taking a standard small kit, most commonly used items would be the Condoms, Imodiums, Eye-drops.

Yes you can buy in local pharmacy (and I do) but you can get caught out very badly if not handy....my thai wife shat herself magnificently as I dashed to the pharmacy back home in Aust. "Well darling you will eat super spicy som-tum and all that other

weird stuff"

One less thing to think about when you get there.

Never had a problem with any of the Free water, but you don't really know what caused it anyhow in most cases....

I agree with this.

anyway, even in the shower you may get some water coming into your mouth. So sticking to bottoled water for mouth wash is a bit of a waste for me.

I don't drink straight on tap water, but when it happens, it happens...

Also, i may use immodium but only if I know I will be far from hotel or toilets for a long time.

I don't use antibiotic to get rid of the bug unless it is realy realy bad (with fever and nausea). If it's only diarrhea, body should learn to get rid of the bacteria by itself...
