my friend flew with them last year cheap, not much in the way of in flight entertainment, crappy food apart from that no problems. I am heading in sept and im thinking about using them. the price is very good, and i usually have a few scotch`s and some sleepers and ko. Turkish airlines are also cheap, but I had 1 friend that had a really bad experience with them lost 4 days of his holiday to los. but up to you

Ulsterman

Flew them once bout 3 years ago from Amsterdam its an old 747 on that route

no self select enterainment just normal tvs hanging out of the roof

food crap etc

i dont think id ever fly them again unless new aircraft is put on that route

i normally use Etihad Air from Dublin with stop over in Abu Dhabi nice to break up the journry

Etihad have super aircraft and excellent enterainment system and flight normally costs €700/€800

+1 on Etihad, got business class return for 1800 to BKK. Trailfinders were doing a deal with China Airlines but even they admitted that their planes aren't as modern. Some of them still have the old style entertainment system and is not on demand like Etihad. China airlines get very mixed reviews and the flight times aren't as favourable as Etihad,(2 hour turnaround in Abu Dhabi).

I took CA066 AMS-BKK Business. It's an old 747 but the seat are comfortable, the service/food is good and the price is reasonable(€1600 return-ticket all-in), I do admit that the inflight entertaiment good be better.

But there is one great advantage, the flight times are superb. AMS-BKK 14:45-6:45, BKK-AMS 2:30-9:00 - You board, eat a little and then sleep, you arrive relaxed in the morning and go about your business.

Even if you have short-haul in Europe, it's basicly a hoop and long sleep - in difference to about 6 hours to the middle east stop-over and another long flight.

And CA annouced to modernise the 747 this fall, for details please see their webside.

Hi Ulsterman, I have travelled with China on Dub-Ams-BKK many times, and as said before yes it is an old 747 aircraft on that route, but all in all its ok as i take a sleeping tablet about 2 hrs into the flight, so the on board entertainment doesnt bother me. just bring a book! Prices are good with them, i usually pay 650 Euro, im actually travelling with them on 2nd june, 2 weeks from today :Bravo1: Food is ok, nothing to write home about, but just keep thinking of the destination!!! The times are good, arriving in BKK 6-15am after a few hours of sleep, and ready to rock and roll. Enjoy man, let loose when you arrive, let us know how you get on.

I went on china airlines last month... My ratings for this flight would be 5/10.. Service good... Dinner (dont know, never ordered ).. Movie ...Bad (only one for us all to watch, their choice of films)... I was lucky, i slept 9 hours during the flights.. Next time, i go to Etihad Airways..

It seems that CA suits those that can sleep, I can't sleep, not in economy class anyway. This time I've splurged for business class with Etihad so we'll see if I can manage a few hours on that fabled flat bed! Although it seems such a waste to sleep in business class with all the extras on offer 555.

I think there are to type of people, in this forum ( and on this planet).

1. Holiday flyers - They fly rarely and consider it to be interesting, they are looking for food and IES.

2. Frequent flyers - As they are on a plane every other week anyway, they are just interested in the result/flight times and leg room.

When you consider your self to be in the first group, probably CA is not your thing - there is nothing glamorous about it.

If you are a member of groupe number two, here the important pros: safe / reliable / good shedule / most of distance without transfer - no long waits / spacious business seats

I consider myself in the 2nd group, at most two trips abroad each year yet I would rather spend the extra money to have some comfort especially on a long haul flight, it also means having access to a good lounge at the airport, some reasonable privacy on the flight and treating yourself for a few hours. Hell you've worked all year so I think you should go the extra mile on your holidays.

China Air used to be my regular route - I tried a lot of the others & found China Air to offer the best value & decent service. I even gathered up enough airmiles for a free upgrade to business class!

Amsterdam is a really nice airport to connect through, though the layout means it takes a while to get between gates. There are reclined seats, perfect for sleeping in on the first floor at Lounge 2 in the transfer area, at the opposite end to McDonalds. There is an art gallery, casino & many other things to fill in time. It is a total contrast to the chaos that is Heathrow.

I would recommend that you bring sandwiches with you as the food isn't great on China Air. If you ask nicely they sometimes have ham & cheese rolls available. They also have pot noodles available but they are asian branded ones & are a bit spicy. I bring my own & they will fill it with hot water for you. I have found the staff to be very pleasant & helpful.

The IFE is hit & miss, some planes have seat back units, some use screens in the roof. Doesn't bother me as a good book & MP3 player keeps me happy til I fall asleep.

As for providing booze, normally not a problem. When they switch off the cabin lights during the night I go up to the kitchen area & ask there rather than ringing the bell. I usually try to book an exit row seat so I can get up & move around without bothering other passengers.

Last time I travelled I used Etihad & they would be my preferance now. They are so much better for the price & I like the break mid way over in Abu Dhabi, though if China Air was cheaper I would still use them.
