Everton and Wayne Rooney have reached an agreement for the player to join MLS side D.C. United on a permanent transfer.

England’s record goalscorer will move to Washington after scoring 11 goals in 40 Everton appearances following his return to the Club from Manchester United last summer.

The forward initially joined Everton aged nine and graduated through the Blues’ renowned Academy before making his first-team debut against Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of the 2002/03 Premier League season.

Rooney became the Club’s youngest goalscorer when, aged 16, he struck twice in a League Cup tie at Wrexham in October 2002 and weeks later entered the nation’s consciousness with a match-winning strike past Arsenal’s England goalkeeper David Seaman.

His debut campaign saw Rooney score six goals before he won his first England cap in February 2003. The boyhood Evertonian remains the Three Lions’ youngest scorer after hitting the net against Macedonia aged 17 years, 317 days in September 2003.

Rooney retired from international football in 2017 as his country’s record outfield caps holder, with his 53 goals in 119 appearances making him England’s all-time leading marksman.

The 32-year-old won five Premier League titles and the Champions League during 13 years with Manchester United. He is the Old Trafford club’s record scorer after accumulating 253 goals in his 559 matches for United.

Rooney also led Everton’s Premier League scoring charts last term with 10 goals. His sublime 57-yard effort to complete his hat-trick in a 4-0 win over West Ham United was named Goal of the Season at the Club’s end-of-season awards night, The Dixies.

He scored a total of 208 Premier League goals for Everton and Manchester United combined, making him the second highest goalscorer in Premier League history.

Rooney will complete the formalities of his move when the MLS transfer window opens on July 10.

From everyone at Everton, we thank Wayne for his service to the Club and wish him every success in the next three-and-a-half years with DC United.
