Mozzie bite

JonnyR

Recommended Posts

Was bitten a number of days ago twice, once on the ankle and the other on the shin/thigh area.

The bite on the ankle has ballooned while the bit on the shin has expanded to leave a largish red area.

I went to a clinic on Soi Bua Khua and the (Quack) doctor said I had Cellulitis and said I needed 3 injection costing 1400 baht. Needless to say I declined the offer as the injection would have consisted of being hooked up to a drip, and to come back everyday for 3 days. Place didnt look clean.

Ive since googled Cellulitus and I believe it is possible to get it from a Mozzie, but it's more likely from a spider.

I've gone into a few pharmacies and have decided to stick to Tiger Balm + Antiseptic ceam and to wait until I go back home to get it sorted out.

Anyone every experience swelled feet + expanded red area around bit and how did your treatment go?

I get a really bad reaction to insect bites sometimes. It sounds as if you have the same reaction as me - a raised red spot around the bite & a build up of fluid behind it. Is the bite constantly weeping? If it is then it's infected.

Antibiotics do the trick for me. You can pick up some penicillin (Amoxycillin or Dicloxilin) for a couple of hundred baht in the pharmacy; I don't trust the generic 20B brands.

An anti-inflammatory seems to help too. They sell 600mg Ibuprofen pills over here, which all the pharmacies have & charge 70B for 12.

Some people have success with anti-histamines for an allergic reaction, but I never have. I think you need to take them just after been bitten anyway. I bought 100 Histatab pills for 20B from the pharmacy next to Subway on Soi Diana, which I'll try out next time. Also I found a good topical cream called Systral (Chlorphenoxamine), which according to the box is for 'anti-allergenic, anti-pruritic, insect bites & sunburn'.

BTW Tiger Balm is good for mild reactions, but not for strong ones & actually makes it worse if the bite is open. Anti-sceptic cream is OK, but one containing hydro-cortisone is a lot better. :GoldenSmile1:

if you are concerned about the cleanliness you could go to the pattaya-bangkok-hospital. they are very clean, but also expensive. but if you have a health insurance, that shouldnt be a problem.

Seems too late for preventative measures, i guess you have been infected. In english terms you have 'infected cellutis' and i know this very well.

On Koh Samet on my first visit, i was rip'd to shreds by mosquito's and upon my return diagnosed to the UK with "infected cellulitus". I had a week of work, my leg ballooned, the swelling was surprising and i had 3 scabs the size and depth of 25satang. I could barely walk......

It's not the mosquito bite that trigger this, it's the dirt and flies that surround the affected area that turn it bad into a serious problem.

I can not suggest a cure, but my previous and recent trip to Koh Samet i used a spray on my legs with a high deet factor and did not have the same problem.

had exactly the same on my ankle last trip. it felt as though i had a bruised ankle, similar to a sprained ankle. i never took anything for it, just rode it out. took about 3 weeks to go away, i was home for a fortnight before it went away totally.

it could be cellulites but they only give you amoxycillin plus anti inflammatory so go to pharmacy

A Thai girls arsehole is just like a 9 volt battery you know you shouldn't but sooner or later you will put your tounge in it

I've had major swelling a few times after a mosquito bite, an antihistamine (or two) has always sorted it out for me. I would go to Pattaya Memorial Hospital, corner of 2nd Rd & Pattaya Klang, for a proper diagnosis though.

Cellulitis is a common skin infection caused by bacteria.

Symptoms

•Signs of infection:

•Chills, shaking

•Fatigue

•General ill feeling (malaise)

•Muscle aches, pains (myalgias)

•Warm skin, sweating

•Pain or tenderness in the area with the rash or sore

•Skin redness or inflammation that increases in size as the infection spread

The intent of cellulitis treatment is to decrease the severity of the infection, speed up recovery, relieve pain and other symptoms, heal the skin, and prevent the infection from coming back.

Antibiotics are usually used to treat cellulitis. If the infection is limited to a small area, has not spread to the bloodstream or lymph system, and you don't have any other medical problems, antibiotics you take by mouth (oral) are effective. If the infection is more widespread, or if you're having a slow recovery on oral antibiotics, antibiotics may be used intravenously (IV) or by injection.

For cellulitis of the leg or arm, treatment also includes elevating the limb to reduce swelling.

Treatment for children depends on their age and which part of the body is infected. An antibiotic is usually given intravenously. Facial cellulitis in young children requires immediate treatment and responds well to antibiotics.

i usually get red bumps appearing but i just leave them alone, dont like taking tablets and drinking unless its something like gaviscon. sometimes if they get itchy i usually stick my cigarette into it and try and burn the infection out.

has never worked but it usually seems like a good idea after a belly full.

I had this happen to me, get some Zam Buk (small green and red tin) for 100B rub it on a few times a day and it will be gone in a day or two.

This guy HERE had a mozzie bite and went to the International Hospital (more expensive than Memorial) for a proper diagnosis.

They diagnosed Dengue Fever and he almost died here. Sorry for the extreme example but......ShitHappens1.gif

He's still in hospital now.

When I got home I went to the local GP who said the Quack in Soi Bua Khua was right. Cellulitus. I was prescribed some Geriflox Capsules x 4 per pay for 7 days (contains flucloxacilin) plus was given some Antiseptic cream that I had to appy 3 times a day. I'll edit with name. Apparently this cream is prescribed for people who are going to areas with Mozzie activity beforehand. A mate of mine went to Peru and when he was getting vaccinated he got the antiseptic cream I got to bring with him.

Per the GP it could have lead to Septicemia.

Foot now ago but as I'm back nearly 3 weeks holiday seems like it didnt happen
