Automatic Image Watermarking

Recommended Posts

A few months ago LaaMok ran a poll to get members thoughts on automatic image watermarking. The result of the poll showed that a vast majority of members who voted would be in favour of automatically watermarking images on upload.

There have been numerous threads and tutorials on how to watermark images, there have also been some occurrences of images showing up on other websites. Only recently a member of the forum uploaded images onto Flickr attempting to pass them off as his own. Although watermarks will not stop this we believe that people will be less likely to do it as it will have our watermark on it. The watermarks will also help the admin and mod team get your pictures removed when they appear on a site that they shouldn't.

We appreciate that some people will welcome this change and some people may not, having trialled it on another forum it has been a 100% success. There is currently no way to turn this off at member level and currently no plan in place to add it.

As a significant number of members have indicated that they would like their uploads to be watermarked and in the interest of member security/privacy all images will now be watermarked automatically.

I see I was wondering where it came from when I posted a picture today, good idea :)

Is this just from pictures added from now on or are all pictures posted on this forum automatically marked?

I presume if we are using picture hosting sites and linking to them (did this is my trip report) then the images won't be watermarked.

Are there any rules regarding this?

It is a little bit big! good idea though

I don't agree that it spoils the pics for the purpose they are intended at all.

However, playing around with it, it does appear to be of a constant size at a fixed position in the corner.

That means that in smaller pics it will be right across them, or on really small ones not appear at all.?

Maybe I'm wrong?

b2pa.jpg av-34565.jpg It looks like back to the drawing WaterMarking board to me I'm afraid.

Being someone who had some of my photos "lifted" from my trip report and placed on a different website by a thief who claimed they were his own, I appreciate the need and concerns for picture security. I think many pictures will be greatly diminished by the placement and size of the PA watermark.

For example, these two pictures in my eye are now very flawed from the watermark, particularly the last one.

I really don't see why.

If you are so precious about your pics, maybe there's a higher plane you should be posting on, but for the purposes of PA, what is the problem?

Why are you being such an asshole about the guys opinion?

He is as entitled to voice it as much as you are.As I said in an earlier post I think the watermark is too big especially

on smaller pics. One of the things that makes this board great is the pics and if they are gonna be ruined by a huge logo

across some of the nicer parts ie.the girls ass in the pic then I think some board members will just not bother uploading

them.I do think watermarking is a good idea but just smaller and not all across the girls face or other nice parts.

Just because someone does not agree with you does not make them wrong. So for the purposes of PA ffs how about you lighten the hell up.

i agree with the to big comments, it makes the pictures look like an advertising board!

The turn off function would be good. some bm's also like having there own watermark on there pics, does that mean there will be 2 watermarks?

I work hard to support those on benefits! :Banghead2:

Hey Mick, no worries and there is no problem for me. You are right about the pictures being precious to me as they are a vivid reminder of the great times I have with the beautiful Thai ladies. I am sure there are a lot of other addicts who feel similar about their pictures of ladies they have been with. PA will do what it wants with the pictures and hopefully not too much key composition of the photo will be covered by a watermark stamp. :GoldenSmile1:

I support this issue wholeheartedly.

As I have stated many times previously, I know that once an image is posted upon this site (being the internet) I have lost total and absolute control of the image as to where it may be posted and I accept this fact.

I believe that it is important to know that this watermark indicates that the image was posted into a particular site and therefore has some history of origin if it were to be viewed elsewhere.

I do not believe that this will stop the pilfering of images however having a security tag now creates a problem of ownership for the bastard 3rd party thieves!

A great initiative and I applaud it.

Watermarking is a must IMHO, for those of you who have had pictures stolen then claimed by someone else will completely understand this.

I resize my images to 800 x 600 or 640 x 480 so that the thief doesn't have a full, good quality image but personally I want the watermark, including my name in the photo.

Too many people on other forums gain respect and notability by posting other peoples photo's.

The water marking thing will go ahead on the forum, it is just a matter of picking the watermark and applying it to the forum, hell even dating sites use it.

Sorry Kenna, maybe I put that badly. I understand what you're saying and obviously the image you hold dear is the original you keep for yourself.

The one you cast out here before us swine can really end up anywhere as Fred11 says. I believe some of yours have been re-posted on another forum?

WaterMarking will discourage a lot of people from doing it. That's why so many sites use it and that's why the majority of BMs here voted for its implementation. It was highlighted in the Pinned "Photographing TGs" thread by Med5 and I ran it in my Signature for the duration of the voting period.

Discussion about whether it should be done took place already and BMs placed their votes. That's a done deal.

WaterMarking has to happen here IMO. At the very very least, it is a statement that the image posted was intended only for this site and not for any other, or even for someone's personal use.

There are lots of sites out there, porn or other, where people do put stuff out there for others' use, but surely most of us who post here are just saying "Here's an experience I had (some call it boasting) and here are some illustrations of it"?

I don't suppose we all see it the same, but I for one don't do it so that others can download stuff and run with it as their own.

Tbh, if there was a Poll on trying to stop downloading I would vote for that too. I know there are ways round it, but it would be one more hurdle a lot of the thieves couldn't get over.

The only issue that may still be up for discussion with the Mods is how it is done, but if it is to do its job it has to be across the pic to a significant extent.

Your own WM is a nice personalisation and there's no reason to stop doing that, but for this purpose it is just too easy to crop it off.

Yours says "I took this photo and here it is to do with as you please"

The one running here says "This photo was intended only for the Pattaya Addicts forum".

I'm interested in any discussion about how it should be done. I don't know if you saw it but I trialled a more extreme version of the current one in "When Pui didn't show" and invited comment. Only one guy criticised it and when I explained the reason why, he came back with his own suggestion, which I thought was actually more obtrusive than mine.

I seriously don't think it takes anything away from the quality of the pics you post, for the purpose most of us intend. I do understand that serious photographers won't like to see anything other than the image they captured and edited, but there are other issues here.

Why are you being such an asshole about the guys opinion?

Me lighten up? rolleyes.gif

It's just a discussion right?. I'm light. GoldenSmile1.gif

One of the things that makes this board great is the pics and if they are gonna be ruined by a huge logo................... I think some board members will just not bother uploading

IME the thing that has done the most to discourage posting of pics is the thing the Mods are trying to deal with. A small unobtrusive WM does not do the job intended.

Agree, especially the huge watermark on the 2nd pic is quite disturbing and could be designed more unobtrusively, while still serving its purpose.

Well said Edge and I totally agree.

However I do understand your point Kokat but I think this is a must now to albeit attempt to stop others taking credit for your work.

I too only wish I was worthy of taking 1% of the credit for your every fine photographic skills, though with about 90 days to go (but who's counting huh) I'd better start warming up the almighty point and shoot pocket rocket camera in an attempt to embarrass myself against the professionals like your good self. But rest assured I'll have much fun taking my amature shots.

PS. Is it possible to re-position the WM to either one of the corners or to run parallel down one side and to redice the font only slighty?

Bearing in mind that one of the main intended purposes is to discourage people from just cropping it off and still having a usable pic to repost elsewhere or whatever, I'd be interested in how you would apply it differently to achieve the same end?

Bear in mind that it is not practicable to apply them individually to each pic as best suited to the content.

Once the serious photograghers know where the WM will appear, they may have the option in editing (cropping) to allow for it, but that's up to them.

It probably needs a settling in period before having a review, but no harm in playing around in the meantime.

Hi Fred,

What you suggest is easily done, but as I asked Benny, how can you do that and still discourage an easy cropping job?

That's the point of putting it on the diagonal. Simple cropping would take away too much of the pic.

Some of us know how to defeat a WM, just as some of us know how to get over your garden wall, but that's not a reason for not building a wall is it (especially in Thailand lol)?.

The majority don't know how (or can't be bothered) to get round a WM, but I think most can do a simple cropping job.

A determined thief will get past any security, but thankfully there aren't too many of those on here, so if they do it it should be easier to track them down.

There are lots of free WM progs so if anyone thinks they could place a WM differently but get the same result I'd say have a play with it. It's not as easy as it sounds.

My basic photo editing skills are most certainly no match for a versatile genius like you, but here’s some suggestion.

Personally I prefer the thin lines, maybe in combination with a smaller PA watermark placed in a corner.

If If photographers are against the idea of a watermark then you can host your pics on any number of services and link to them in your thread - then it is up to you to follow up if someone tries to take credit for your work.
