When Im on holiday in Thailand I drink almost (if not..) every day. I drink about 10 beers + a few hard drinks a day. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

On my last vacation I had a real bad hangover and I stopped by a pharmacy. I told them how much I drink and they suggested I start to take Essentiale wich will recover my liver and actually build up new liver tissue. I bought a box (800Bht!!) and took the recomended two a day.

Well, ofcourse it didnt make me feel any better, but does anybody know this medicine? does it really do what it says recover liver tissue? Because if that is so...hey ...no reason to stop the holiday drinking..

Essentiale is produced by Aventis and comes in boxes of 100 capsules for 800 baht a box.

But no worries Kaisa-Lisa and Nancy, if you feel that excessive amount of alcohol are to much for your adolecent bodies doctor Johnny has the cure for you two:

1, limit your intake to one drink to each 10 kilos so put a max to 4-6 drinks/day preferably Spy Winecoolers and have at least 2 bottles of waters for each drink and don't forget to carb up inbetween!

2, Don't drink at all you may end up in a bad situation and be taken advantage of!

3, Think less and if you get too worn out by your rockstar binge drinking inject a double dose of vitamin B3, 6 and 12 twice a week!

It revigorates you completly within 60 minutes.

From a scientific standpoint, this is basically a glorified vitamin pill. There is no proven scientific evidence that it helps in any way. Incidentally, your liver has the capacity to regenerete cells after an acute injury (one of the few very few body organs to have this ability), so the cells will regrow anyway if the injury is acute and short-term. If there is a long-term insult (such as chronic alcoholism) then of course the recovery never happens and the liver capacity gradually continues to shrink over time.

Milk thistle is one of the best vitamins for the liver, Also I've learned that cirrhosis is caused by the copper and the zinc fighting in your liver. I am not a doctor, but it would seem zinc would also be helpful before the copper wins. There is also a product called liv 52, I can only find on internet. But seems to help. None are for hangovers, but if you drink a lot these are things that may help the good times last a bit longer.

Thank you all for your replies. Looks like there are no shortcuts or wonder medicines.

I red an article by a danish doctor that suggests that more than 4 beers (0,33cl) a day, in time (must be loooong time), will damage your liver and that the liver can only take about 60 mg of pure alcohola day for about 10 -15 years. After that youre done.

I was hoping that the Essentiale could help me beat the maths. A kind of protection when in danger zone. Just like rubber protects you in other dangerous activities.

The important thing with alcohol is not so much how much you drink but that you have days when you don’t drink any alcohol at all. Obviously that does not mean that getting smashed on alcohol 6 out of 7 nights is going to be good for you, although clearly it’s better than getting smashed 7 out of 7 nights.

The days off alcohol give your body chance to recover. Even if you drink a small amount of alcohol days off are still important.

I wouldn't be too worried about the liver because it has ability to renew itself. Before liver fails, your brains, cardiovascular system, nervous system, kidneys and (most importantly) dick has already been more or less permanently damaged.

An oversimplification. Essentiale is regularly presribed for degenerative liver diseases including hepatitis, diabetes and cirrhosis. However, I don't think that taking it while continuing to hammer your liver daily will make much difference. If you're that concerned, rein in the drinking...if not, take your chances. People are always looking for easy fixes which very rarely exist.

As for 'regeneration' - you have to give your liver the chance in the first place. Liver disease is not to be taken lightly - it can leave you feeling chronically fatigued and full recovery can take years in some cases. Take a look in a digestive diseases ward at a hospital and have a look at people, some of whom have wilfully damaged their liver with drink and drugs - some pitiful sights to be seen. Do you really want to f*ck up your life for the sake of a few extra drinks. Nobody was ever killed by moderation.

Yes, I admit that I was trying to keep it simple. I could not agree more with your post-I think it is spot-on. I am guessing you are located in Europe, where this drug is indeed being prescribed. Here in the US it is in the vitamin section of the pharmacy and anyone can buy it without a prescription, which is why I made the statement that I did. I have not seen any people with chronic liver disease here in the US who were recommended to take this pill by their gastroeneterologists (which I admit I am not). Thus I concluded that it's benefits, if any, are negligible or most the liver patients would be on it, as here there is a very low thereshold for prescribing mutiple medications if any of them have been shown in medical studies to have any effect on patient outcomes. I suspect it is one of those (many things) that are just done differently on either side of the pond.

Since this in Pattaya Addicts this is probably going grossly off-topic anyway-send me a PM if you want more info on this.
