Alright there guys.

I am curious to know how many if any of you have toured Thailand or any other Far eastern places , Staying in bed sits, camping or what ever.Working in any possible job to stay afloat so to speak. You know the normal cheap as possible method of travel?

I have just parted from a girl here in england and am starting to evaluate my life a bit , im not bitter, annoyed or anything like that i just feel a trip of self discovery in far eastern places is what i have always been destined to do and now is A better time than any.

Soooooo, Is there anyone here that has done this in the past? Or even better plan to do this in the not to distant future??

Thanks for reading and i hope to be reading your stories, thoughts ETC

When I was a young and innocent student type I 'did' Thailand and Indonesia, backpacking around but there was no chance of work in S.E. Asia for an unemployed student.

I spent all my money and then headed for Australia to find work. Then I was young enough to get a work permit for Oz.

Had an absolute fantastic time getting drunk and smoking the 'bong' for a year before heading back into Asia to spend all my Dollars.

On my visits to LOS since then,I've chatted with quite a few blokes working on rigs in the Gulf or off Australia and a few working in the Aero industry here....but backpackers getting jobs?

Thanks for your answer i bet you had a wicked time.

I dont supose you know how I would go about inquiring about jobs on rigs in that part of the world would you??

Thanks again

I spent 10 years of my younger days on the road. I joined an Africa overland expedition in London and traveled in an old battered ex British army Bedford 4x4 across Africa to Cape Town with 21 others who turned out to be a motley crew of dope smokers. Had a great time.

Traveled indepentley from Mexico city through central America and South America to lake Titicaca.

However spent most of my time traveling in Asia as this is the cheapest and safest option. Push biked from Singapore to Istanbul, Toured south Asia on an Indian Royal Enfield motorbike. Treked and climbed in the Hindu Kush,Pamir,Karakorum, and Himalaya.

On my travels I learnt and instructed scuba diving, Muay Thai and taught English as a secound language amongst other things I have managed a bungalow operation and beach bar. So there is work out there if your prepared to put the effort in and learn as you go new skills.

All you need is a sense of adventure, tons of patience and a little bit of money.

Don't worry about going alone as you will make lots of friends on the way.

Health warning - you will seriously enjoy yourself.

I can recomend the Indian subcontinent to back pack around ,cheap as chips and very rewarding.

Lonely Planet publish travel guides and give all the info on how to get started.

Do it , you only live once.

Not really.... one of my mates works I think for Texaco and he was working somewhere off Western Australia the other year but hes been working offshore on rigs in the North Sea for years.
