HD TV IN PATTAYA - WORTH IT?

biggles

Recommended Posts

I live near Carrefour, just off Pattaya central road. I have Sophon cable and the picture varies between very good to average on the apartment supplied TV. I have been thinking about a HD 32 inch Tv, Carrefour has some good prices at the moment, but I wonder if the picture would be that much better. It uses the same aerial, there is no HD picture transmission so I guess I would be just viewing the same picture on a better Tv. Can anyone who has made the same move let me know if the picture quality was worth the added expense, please?

I am no expert but even the UBC pic quality is shite half the time. i have an expensive HD TV but half the channels are not even digital let alone HD. I have UBC and Cable - the UBC quality is a lot better than the Sophon but both are a long way from perfect.

Do you subscribe (pay an extra 200ish) to get the UBC HD channel/s?

It looked like an add-on when I looked, but they stick the odd popular boxing or footie on it to get you to pay.

UBC is not good value for me. I'm trying to get my dish sorted and go Astro HD now.

To the OP, I think you'd be watching a better picture and 32" HD TVs are really cheap now, but no you won't be watching HD progs.

Watching DVDs should be better too - I think.

The Sophon cable picture quality is very poor. Unless you have a very old/knackered TV you will not get much improvement with a new TV. True Visions (satellite) now broadcast some Hi-Def content so you may want to subscribe to that. Alternatively you could buy a HD media player and download content using bittorrent or buy HD movies here.

Legends bar in Nirun Condos has a HD screen facing the street.

It's the clearest picture I've ever seen in SEA.

I don't know who they are hooked up to but they show most football matches.

It might be worth your while to invest in a beer there (40 pesos).

OK guys, I took the plunge and bought a 32 inch samsung from Carrefour for 10,000 baht. Its not a really good picture at all but the dvds are great. mate has sophon and his picture is terrific after a sophon tech came around and did something strange and mysterious to the aerial box. Got the apartment manager on to it and he is getting someone in to look. 3 other tenants have HD tv and sophon with crap pictures too so he would like to improve things.

.

Nothing to do with Sophon, so off topic I'm afraid, but for HD atm it's looking like the Malaysian package Astro B.Yond might be the way to go.

WEll I am a happy camper, Sophon came around, worked their magic on the aerial and I have a great picture. crap programs of course, nothing the techo can do about that. Now I am glad I bought it, and the pornos look good on a big screen.....

Last trip, I've stayed at the Hilton hotel which had great picture quality and many (if not all) HD channels. Might be worth to check out where they have their cable from.

Unless your getting an HD signal and it's comming in on the HDMI CABLE not the normal coxial cable you will not be getting HD pitures. Your cable company might have an extra HD package you can add on to get HD TV. I would ask to see what chanels you would get. If its only a couple it would not be worth the extra. HD is still early in its life and not all programing is being shot with HD pic quality.

UBC now launch 6 or 8 new HD channels. Total number will then be 8 or 10. At the same price, 290 Baht/month

What is the cost to switch to a HD box (apart from the extra 290 a month). I have the basic UBC box and might switch now they have more channels

i have just got the hd box installed free instalation and 4 months free of extra charges. only problem is only 3 hd channels in pattaya. the extra channels advertised are only in bangkok on their cable service. great quality on their sports channel and they continue the half time commentry [unlike true sport one which goes to thai talk during the half time break].

any holes a goal

I just had the HD box installed as well and treated myself to a new LED TV. I have to say the pictures on HD are stunning. I wasn't going to continue the HD trial after the free 4 months but now i am tempted. Shame it's only 3 channels (2 really one movie one sport).

If you live in Thailand "long time", consider Astro from Malaysia. Looks like they have 19 channels in HD right now http://www.astro.com.my/portal/hd . Just google "Astro satellite dish Thailand" and voila, you 'll find providers. I used to live in Malaysia and have used Astro there, but never in Thailand, just heard and read that it was possible.

I suggest you read the FAQS page.

Although it claims no monthly fees at the moment it is subject to change.

Channels are not guaranteed, (may be one channel one day than another channel the next) sucks if you get drawn into a tv series or something.

Still sounds very interesting though, I may have a go at it.

Cable TV in 576i looks worse on HDTV than on CRT, but why bother with the crap Sophon & Co feed in? Internet TV and video libraries like youtube have lots of 1080p content, movies, documentaries, music, pornos, whatever you're looking for.
