Looking to Hire a car from Phuket Airport

Looking for some quick advice on hiring a car in Phuket when me and a couple of mates get there in May.

 

When we land in Phuket we plan on driving straight to Ao Nang from Phuket airport to do some rock climbing. Then we're going to travel on to Krabi Town and get a ferry to Phi Phi before going back to Ao Nang/Railay for a bit more climbing and back to Patong for the rest of the holiday. Looking to hire the car for about 4 days in total.

 

Is it best to stick with a well known firm like Hertz and pay a premium or is it worth trying out a local Thai company? Has anyone had any experience with this? Also book on arrival or book before travelling?

 

Also are there any pitfalls to watch out for hiring a car? Im sure it would be cheaper to get taxis between these places but having a car will give us more flexibility and the opportunity to stop off in random places.
