Your favorite hole in the wall restaurant?

Recommended Posts

What everyone’s favorite hole in the wall restaurant. A hole in the wall restaurant really does not have any atmosphere other that great food and friendly staff. A hole in the wall restaurant is often packed with locals and your trip would just not be complete without going there every time you come to Pattaya. I love hole in the wall restaurants and try to search them out on every vacation.

Forgive my ignorance...What is a Hole in the wall restaurant? and which is the one you frequent?

There are some that only employ words for the purpose of disguising their thoughts.

A hole in the wall restaurant is usually small and in the side of a building (shack, small stand alone building). They are usually owned by a mom and pop and locals frequent the restaurant. They are the type of restaurant that does not need to have any atmosphere because the food is so good (however they can have atmosphere). They are usually off the beaten path. You find yourself thinking about the restaurant even when you return home from your vacation.

I have not been to Pattaya. I am going for 2 months  and I like great local food that is not touristy or in a touristy location. So I am looking for ideas.

I have to agree with Pepe, Num Chai (I think thats what it's called) is a great place frequented by locals and farang. Excellent menu with lots of local fare to choose from. It's also quite cheap and if you sit facing the street you can see the world go by on soi bukhao.

Cheers

I've been trying to find this place. Where exactly is it in context to Soi Diana / LK?

Turn left onto Bukao from LK. Walk about 250 metres. You will see a Kasikorn bank branch on the left hand side (Green bank), 50m past that there is a Family Mart and the restaurant is opposite.

And a photoguide link for Nuch's place which I have heard good things about but never eaten there (note the photo guide is a few years old and was taken pre Nuch. Nuch's place is the Laundry)

Thank you, Mr, uh... Pew, I'm glad that shows up on Mapjack. It looks exactly like the local's place I want to go to when I visit Pattaya. Instead of calling it a "hole in the wall" restaurant, perhaps the OP should describe them as "run-down, dumpy-looking places that tourists avoid but locals flock to because the food is authentic and great". That's what I want, and I think that's what he meant. What would be great is if one of the folks here, the next time they go, could take a pic (with cellphone?) of the menu (if any) or more likely the blackboard menu. I'm sure many peope here would love to see that. Also, recs for best dishes. I bought a fine Lonely Planet guidebook dedicated just to Thai food, and I'd like to give it a workout.

You're welcome Mr ....Thaid?

I believe 'hole in the wall' is the generic term generally used to describe such eating places which cater to locals and usually have no name. The menu in the one to which you refer is actually quite a large homemade book consisting of pictures of the dishes. This is usually the case in Pattaya as they know they will be catering to us as well as locals. When you go to such places outside of the tourist areas there is often no menu at all. You may have to choose your food by pointing at it if you can see it or do as many of us have had to do and mime the actions of a chicken or a pig or whatever you fancy eating, often to the amusement of the establishment.

Soi 15 off Walking Street. Nana Cafe, best Kao Ka Moo I've had i Thailand, and 40B. The variety of food in the soi is great, hard-core Issan, seafood, bbq bugs, etc. And great for people watching.

Yes, she is still there. But it is not as good as it use to be, but I think it is better the hole in the wall on soi bouwkow. It best when Nui is doing the cooking and not her daughter.

On Central between 2nd rd and soie Backaou there are a group of

little restaurants in a shared common area. They are sort of hidden

behind some fruit stands. It's on the side of the street of soie 6,

not 7. All these little stands are very good, not fancy and very

cheap. They're open 24 hrs. I sort of hate to give away this info,

I don't want they become too busy, but I have to share with my

P.A. bros. :Buddy1:
