Back from hell - Pattaya horror story revisited

Bangkok, February 1 2011

20101207pattayabrit04.jpg

This is an emaciated Richard Hewitt before being rescued from a Pattaya police cell where he lay naked and cuffed to the cell bars in what witnesses described as a state near to death.

hewitthead011-2.jpg

And this is Richard Hewitt today.

He has made an incredible recovery after treatment at a psychiatric hospital in Bangkok. And remarkably it was a private British citizen who came to his aid after seeing pictures of Hewitt up on this website.

The British Embassy had seemingly written him off as either a ‘feckless’ Brit or perhaps as one Embassy employee apparently described him, unofficially and not without cause - ‘a nutter’.

But now his faculties have returned and Hewitt describes himself as ‘The luckiest man in the world’

And from a world in which he thought he had no cash he has emerged to a world where he is rich well beyond the imagination of his paranoiac alter ego with many millions of Thai baht in his bank account.

He puts his good fortune down to his saviour Tracy Cosgrave, of the charity Melissa Cosgrave Children’s Foundation, who rushed down to Pattaya Police station, had him dressed and fed and persuaded police to send him to a psychiatric hospital.

He is also deeply grateful to his landlord Bunchai Thaiurungrattana at his apartment in Pattaya 3rd Road, Soi 16, who safeguarded his belongings, cash and bank books, until he made his recovery.

For Richard Hewitt is not a Pattaya Brit who has squandered all his cash on booze, women, and drugs… Well, at least not yet.

He is in fact wealthy in his own right. A computer engineer, and graduate from the University of Sheffield, he has in fact lived in Thailand on and off for 12 years and says he has visited ‘and stayed in’ 56 provinces.

He was an English language teacher for Berlitz in Bangkok until four years ago when he quit after his father died and he received a large inheritance.

And it is that inheritance which may have been his undoing. That and perhaps moving to Pattaya with little sense of self control.

“I decided someone would have to make me a pretty good offer if I was ever going to work again,” he said, talking about his inheritance. “That was my downfall”.

Instead he decided to make most of his life in a city once described by Britain’s ‘Observer’ as a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah.

Hewitt, 47, from Brownhills, Birmingham, drank, took drugs, and frequented the city’s sex bars.

His last arrival date from Britain was in the third week of August last year. He resumed his normal lifestyle but insists he quit drugs, and drink by early October.

Nevertheless the damage appeared to have been done. Something somewhere cracked, and he has now only partial memory of what happened. Doctors put it down to paranoiac psychosis. READ THE REST HERE

A good reminder to all .... everything in moderation (even Pattaya).

LaaMok, thanks for posting this story. I totally agree with comments made so far.

I hope I never ever need the help of the British Embassy. It's not the first story I have heard where the Brit Embassy in a country have been next to useless, and seemingly leave their fellow citizens on their own.

"Doctors put it down to paranoiac psychosis."

You knew that was coming. I bet when he's on his meds he's pretty normal.

some time ago I had first hand experience of how useless the Pattaya consular was. I had at one time taken a couple of snap shots of my t/g naked. Not porn, just full body shots. When we had a falling out and I left her, asgainst her wishes, she complained to the police I had those pics of her. Well they acccused me of taking porn pics and intending to sell them on the internet. I spent quite a few hours in the Pattaya police cell, not nice I can tell you.

My passport was with held untill I paid the "fine" of 80000 baht(70 to the pound then). The embassy cconsul, Barry something, told me to go to a lawyer, gave me the name and address. Silly me I went into the wrong one nearby, what a shout went up at that. No! I had to use his lawyer, no one else. The valuable advice I got from the consul and the lawyer, both together in the lawyers office, was to pay the 80000b or I could be waiting for years, yes years before my case cane up. Then, they saidm I would be found guilty anyway.

I had the very strong impression that I was in one corner facing not just the police but these two as well. I could see there would be a three way split somewere along the line.

I had used one bar a lot in my times in Pattaya and had got friendly with the two femal bosses. After I had told them my story and fears they promised to help me. It was my good luck that one of their friends was a plice officer and one of a much higher ranking than my friendly aptain. They had him :lean" on the captain and low and behold the case was dropped and my passport returned.

I HAD HAD THE 80000b sent from England just in case, some went on a flight home, most of the rest on a thank you party at the ladies bar, the Funny girl bar between sois 7 and 8. I considerd myself a very, very lucky man. There was no thanks for the consul, just contempt.

To put a long story to bed, I have been married to a beautiful Thai lady for over 5 years now and living here all that time.

Thank you for a great post, a cautionary tale. Not enough of those on this board.

Some folks may not be equipped to handle Pattaya. It is an illusion that can saturate your libido and make it impossible to have a normal relationship/sex life ever again, It can bankrupt the soul and bank accounts. It can fuel mental disorders including sex addiction, depression and, where excess drink/drugs are involved.... schizophrenia.

Most of us handle LOS just fine, but this story should give us all pause....

Sad story and just goes to show what can happen to the undisciplined in Pattaya.

What's striking about this story as that this guy was not a newbie to Thailand. Article says in face he's been going on and off to Thailand 12 times, and was working in BKK teaching english until he came upon an inheritance.

Even with his experience once he had a chunk of cash he just wanted to spend all his time in the bars and hangouts.

Thanks for the updated story Bryan, I did wonder what had become of that poor man and am glad to hear he is back on his feet again.

I know what it is like having a pile of cash and being in Pattaya to spend it, as when I got divorced and my ex bought me out of our 3 properties, I was in the flight centre the same day and in Pattaya 2 days or so later.

I was basically celebrating my divorce and trying to destroy myself at the same time through alcohol and BG's and it was on that trip that I lost my passport. I am Scottish so hold a British passport and although Barry Kenyan (now retired) assisted me, you will have no idea what a nightmare it was to get a new passport in Bangkok,I felt that the British consulate in Pattaya and Embassy in Bangkok were as much use as an ash tray on a motorbike and I wished I had done the citizenship thing here in Australia and held an Aussie passport as things would have moved much quicker.

Being a former serviceman I used to be proud to have the protection of the British government but not anymore as they only help you if it is convenient to them to do so.

I digress, but I am glad to hear that this guy is back on track as I can't imagine the horrors of losing your marbles in Thailand.

I am very irritated when hearing this type of story. It sucks.

I am not a Brit and I do not believe the oversea Consulate treats their own people like this. Richard is sick and he has Psychosis, he needed medical help and needed to be treated in a hospital but not in a prison cell.

Enough is enough, I think we should have a partition and send it to the Foreign Affair Minister to see what he has to say about it. For all Brits in LOS, ask for the foreign policy of the standing parties in the next election, if they don't want to look after you, don't vote for them.

So, shall we start the partition now?

Unfortunatley the British consulates in many parts of the world still operate like an old boys institution, hence if your not well connected they are as much use as tits on a fish.

I was caught up in a natural disaster many years ago and the first nations to get staff on the ground were the Israelis, Japs,Aussies. In fact everyone turned up except the Brits.

if he's not short of a few bob he should consider a court case for negligence against the consulate that was supposed to be dealing with his case..

I work hard to support those on benefits! :Banghead2:

    • For those that don't know, I did Friday meetings before many years ago,  I feel like we are missing a regular meeting for members,  I am aware guys meet at PA affiliated bars. But I want to start meeting people again, I'm inviting the guys following my YouTube also.

The meetings is a chance to get to meet each other,  I plan to be at every meeting, I also have Dean from Dive bar that has offered to help out with a crawl after.
The meetings will be  Monday  6 pm - 8 pm each week.  (The improvised bar crawl will commence at 8 p.m.  Dean will make his own plans for that.)

Due to low numbers of people in town, I will start the meetings in our bars to help our girls and managers, please check back often incase things are changed.  I will be sharing the love around town later, but Soi 6 is first on my list (including bars that are friendly competition)
If bar owners want us to have a meeting at their bar,  they need to have a minimum of 10 girls.  I'm not dragging people to empty bars for favours.
Please help us invite other members, it takes a while to get momentum.
Monday 6 pm - 8pm  (then bar crawl after)
      21st March - Playpen Soi 6
28th March - Night wish bar Soi 6
