Muay Thai

Recommended Posts

I always found the sport very interesting and wanted to go see a fight in bkk or even Phuket when I visited. Both times I mentioned going, my gf did not want to go. Is there some reason females would be put off? Also, are there distinct weightclasses in the sport as in boxing or wrestling in the USA?

They are pretty much the same, in essence.. Efficiency depends on the experience of the practitioner IMHO.. You can buy dvds of the real fights between burma and Thailand..these include the headbutts and kicks in the balls too. I bought a whole set of them a few trips back..Burma always got their asses kicked :001_Thank_You5:

where did you buy them? I am interested in :ThankGod1:

Muay Thai training options in Pattaya:

* Fairtex Pattaya - http://www.fairtexpattaya.com/

* Sidyongtong - on the darkside of Pattaya

* Scorpion Gym (now Golden Glory Pattaya) - http://scorpion.atk-web.net/ - Theprasit Rd, Soi Norway (17)

* Kombat Group - http://www.kombatgroup.com/

* Tony's Gym - http://www.tonydisco.com/html/muay%20thai%20final/html/welcome.html

* Sitpholek - 217/10 M6 Sukumvit Road, Corner Soi 34

For the month of April, I've been at Scorpion/Golden Glory each day - Alistair Overeem and other Dutch fighters pop in on their way through to Japan for K1 events. You can get 5 rounds of one-on-one training in morning (08:00-10:00) and afternoon/evening (16:00-19:00).

I trained at Scorpion 2 years ago, it was quite good. I hope Whit is still a trainer there, he was very technical. This trip I want to train at Sityodtong for a comparison. Sityodtong is a very famous gym, with a lot of history and tradition.

As for Fairtex, all their famous fighters like Keaw and Yodsangklai, started out and made it big with other Gyms. Then when they were famous, Fairtex comes along and offers them big money to sign a contract and take on the gym name. It is a good way for Fairtex to promote their main money maker, which is their brand of gloves, shorts and training gear. Never heard anything particularly good about fairtex gym, only good for beginners doing the tourist/training thing.

I`m training Muay Thai for about a year now. I love this Sport and it helped me to loose 25kg. We will visit LOS in September and I am wondering, where it is best to buy new gear (Gloves, Pants, Protection,...). I've heard, that the area around Lumpinee is good, but maybe someone has a better Idea

Been asking this question myself lately, check out this link:

http://www.muaythaitrainingcamps.com/buy-muay-thai-gear/

There is a shop at Lumphinee stadium that had great prices, from memory about 1200 baht for Twins gloves. I paid 1900 for the same gloves at Jomhods gym in Phuket, and that was the cheapest I saw them in Phuket! Apparently this shop is open every day, regardless of wether there are fights on, but I went one night when I was leaving the fights. Apparently Rajadamneon stadium has a shop too.

Unfortuneatly this link has no tips for Pattaya. I shop around every time Im there but Ive yet to find any impressive prices. There is a little shop on 2nd rd, just north of Soi Honey, they have a decent range but their prices are standard. Maybe try the Gyms in Pattaya, like Scorpion.

Havent heard anything about this place, would be intersted in some feedback myself.

Another option for basing a holiday around MMA/BJJ training in Thailand is Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket. They have a cage and a very serious MMA program with an American trainer. They have a few UFC fighters come out, like Mike Swick and a few others. The downside of training here is it is in Phuket, which IMHO has nicer beaches than Pattaya but nothing besides that...

Try checking the Stand-up forum on Sherdog.com. HEAPS of those guys go over and train at Tiger. AFAIK, you can stay at the camp, but there are heaps of cheaper options just down the road. Its kinda in the middle of nowhere so you would need to hire a motorbike to get anywhere. The place gets some mixed feedback. Their MMA coach is an American dude called Ray Elbe, he was on the Ultimate Fighter tv show, but got knocked out in the first stage.

Yeah the Twins Shop at Lumpinee Stadium is very cheap. Open every day. Next door to that shop is a King Special shop, so all good. Gloves, pads, headgear all around the 1000-1300 baht range.

All the friends I have that have trained Muay Thai at Tiger have gone down the road to Dragon Muay Thai and got more personalised training for less.

Not sure why you come to Thailand to do BJJ and wrestling??? Can get better Gracie/Machado training in Farangland.

If you find yourself in Patong check out Patong Boxing Gym - more happening there than in boring old Chalong!

I havew also heard many reports of Dragon being better than Tiger. Many ex-Tiger trainers I believe. And have heard slowing reports on Patong Boxing Gym. All training is one-on-one, which I prefer. I will be in Patong for one night this trip before going down to Kata, if I have time in Patong I will check them out. In Phuket I train at J.Prapa gym in Kata, on the main Kata rd opposite the Club Med enterance. I do one on one sessions in the mornig with 5 x World Champ Jomhod Kiatadisek, then have the rest of the day free to do tourist stuff. 600 baht for an hour of one on one. Pads, clinching, light sparring, and in between rounds he tells me stories about all the people hes beat (incl Ramon Dekker, Soren Mongkongtong, Paul Briggs, Wanlop Sitpholek etc). He is a lovely bloke and a great trainer.

anyone know where you can buy a decent pair of boxing gloves? theres a shop opposite tonys gym i visited today but the prices were an absolute rip off, 1000 baht for punchbag gloves with about .5mm padding youd get arthritis within a month using them, and the 1.900 baht ones were cumbersome that didnt fit great, they also had poor padding and had uneccessary padding all round the wrist making them heavy to use.... the best gloves ive ever had were adidas, anyone stock them in pattaya? :001_Thank_You5:

In Pattaya? Good question, Ive always struggled to find really cheap gear there. I would recommend a gym like Scorpion gym for selection, I think form memory they had Twins and Fairtex gloves. Alot of the Windy and even Twins gear in touristy stalls and places and markets are really shit quality, I think alot of it are fakes.

Does the gear shop at Golden Glory (formerly Scorpion Gym) carry brands other than the Golden Glory branded stuff?
