Veggie eats

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Do you have any suggestions of good places serving vegetarian foods? Either specialist veggie or just a decent selection?

Thanks

There is a specifically vegetarian restaurant on Pattaya Tai. I think it's called 5 Star or something like that. It's on your left just as you get to the junction with 3rd Road if you are coming from Walking Street heading toward Sukhumvit. It's owned by the Auntie of a girl I went for dinner with once. Even though I am not vegetarian I thought the food was good.

most thai food is vegetable based, so you will have plenty of choice

vegetarians should really be careful though. Even the vegetable dishes sometimes contain meat.

thanks for the information, and the warning.

By the way, the first time I visited Thailand was for Muay Thai training in Bangkok, more than twenty years ago.

I was there with a load of geordies (from Newcastle in the North East of England to the uninitiated) who thought vegetarianism was basically the same thing as homosexuality (made worse by the fact that I was the only soft Southerner in the group). I kept telling them that they should try veggie food as it was delicious and (no small matter) safer than meat, and after a few weeks they gave in.

To make sure they had a great experience I took us all to the best vegetarian restaurant I could find in Bangkok.

The food was lovely, and my geordie friends changed their views of veggie food. Until everyone went down with food poisoning! I can still remember the sight of a baby sweetcorn that a projectile vomited across my bathroom!

Glad someone made a thread about this as im a vegetarian too. I hear tofu is used quite a bit over there plus the have a vegetarian festival where everyone goes vege once a year, October I think, so there should be a decent amount wherever you go. (I hope anyway)

Tofu is popular all through Asia. In my experience, though, people there don't tend to think of it as an alternative to meat; rather, just another source of protein.

I visited a 'tofu restaurant' in Japan a while back, and half the menu came with meat or fish!

Go into any Thai restaurant and tell them that you 'kin jay'. This will let them know that you are vegetarian and it's easy to remember and say. Thai restaurants are used to people being vegetarian/vegan for religious reasons.

Technically 'kin mangsawirat' is more correct for vegetarian but it's harder to remember and say properly but 'kin jay' will be understood even though it's meaning is more like vegan.

It is really hard to find genuinely vegetarian food in Pattaya - it actually caused me to abandon 13 years of vegetarianism. The vegetarian restaurant at the corner of Pattaya Tai & 3rd Rd is really good though, with a huge variety of veggie dishes.

I'll be in Pattaya next week (yeah!), so will try to put together a Michelin-style guide to vegetarian eating in Patraya.
