BoT won't intervene in capital outflows

The Bank of Thailand has no plans to intervene in foreign capital inflows until the end of this year, BoT's Balance of Payments Division head Don Nakornthab said on Tuesday.

Capital control measures would not be necessary at this time. Investors were still hesitant to invest in risk assets due to concerns over the public debt burden in Ireland, Mr Don said.

 

Bond returns in the country had been reduced and foreign investors would not likely invest a lot during the December holidays, he said.

 

However, he said, the central bank would introduce additional measures if the country sees more inflow of money next year.

 

The BoT official said the baht was appreciating too quickly in the past three months but it was at an acceptable level.

 

The impact of the strong baht had already hit some small and medium-sized firms. The central bank will announce its plan to allow free movement of financial capital out of Thailand to help oversee the capital inflows and outflows, he said.

 

I do note that the Dollar rate has improved a bit over the last few days however the US FED at last report still plans to inject 600B into the US economy. That has to devaluate the dollar.
