Learning the language is key to avoid scams and get better prices on taxis and other things as they think you know the score but yeah I have seen a few of the you have thai girlfriend? even with my 10 or 15 thai words that i know! its pretty ridicuous how quickly some can get defensive

Yeah learning to speak thai is only going to be of your benefit..but choosing the right time & place is important.
