Airport duty free extortion scam

Warning there is a huge scam being reported at Suvarnabhumi airport it is known as the King Power scam---KP operate the duty free shops----the scam is that tourists in the shop are extorted on false shoplifting charges it happens several ways

 

the assistant packs your bag and adds something extra

the reciept does not show all the items you have bought

etc

 

the police are of course assisting with the scam---tourists are being kidnapped and held until they pay up ---one story you can find is of UK tourists held for five days and having to pay £8,000 (i shit you not) .

do not go into the airport shops.

 

Another scam is at the hand luggage security scanner---do not put bank notes---bank cards or jewelry through in the security scanner tray ---the staff are distracting people and then stealing from the trays if you have an expensive watch hand it directly to the walk through scanner staff---if you are wearing gold it will not set off the walk through metal detector so dont take it off.

 

be aware there is no rule of law or justice in Thailand ---and your embassy will not help.

Mate that scam is from early last year i haven't heard of any thing happening recently ...

 

As for going through the x-ray scanners put everything in your carry on luggage, wallet and all......

Everytime people have accused them of scamming, they have supported their claims with video evidence, on their website.

i set of the metal detector at BKK without any metal on me. I must be to fat LOL.

 

Gold is non metallic but will of course restrict the passage of ultrasonic waves which is what the airport scanners use (thats how metal detectors locate gold). They simply plug in a value drop of signal strength that is allowable, and if its exceeded, then the alarm goes off. I would think gold would have the same effect as metal as airport security.

Yeah i was scratching my head a bit at how people are wearing gold through the airport metal detector--- i did a bit of searching around it seems that the scanners are set so that only larger pieces of metal will set them off---so if you are a rapper then yes your huge gold chain will set it off normal sized jewelry semms to pass ok from what i have seen.

 

As to whether this is still relevant----well have you ever heard of the scammers in Thailand stopping their scams or being sorted out by the police---not much chance since the scammers are the police.

 

Oh yeah another example of the complete corruption of the police and authorities was the recent occupation of one of the airport car parks by an armed mafia gang---WTF could you imagine criminals being allowed to do this at heathrow.

I don't understand, you made a claim about Thai authorities being corrupt. On this particular occasion, there is evidence to say that they are not, so instead of retracting your claims, you jump in with an issue over the private car parks.

 

I know that many people don't like Thai authorities, but they should get credit when its due.
