I'll bring a few boxes of Tetley/PG Tips on my next trip!

A thought, whilst on the Tea thinking train. Shouldn't be too hard to get a company to buy some branded tea mugs for the cafe. Their business on one side, PA on t'other!

Its a good idea, but not one business owner has expressed interest in sponsoring any of it. I think the idea wont start, unless I raise money from forum members.

I dont want a bar or gogo, it would be a full time job and headache.

Why not invite members to donate say 500bht? Its not a lot FFS, and the amount of members on here should raise a bit to cover starting costs. Count me in for a donation anyway (as well as kettle/mugs!!)

Keep up the good work mate...PM if you need to...

Not a bad idea. Count me for donation 500, 1000 Baht.

It sounds like a great idea.

I understand why you wouldn't want to get involved with running a bar, but is it impossible that you could consider piggy backing an existing bar, thus avoiding having to take on a lease yourself and also a fair chunk of the start-up costs?

It would mean BMs could have a drink without you having to get involved with all the licences.

The bar owner would have access to a customer base. A sort of joint venture, suck it and see at least until you knew what the potential is.

No, I haven't thought it through, so maybe it's a dumb idea, but yes, I'm thinking of someone you know.

Without thinking it through too much, I wouldn't want to have someone else in control of Pattaya-addicts.com image/branding. If we have a few fat girls there, or the bar was crap it would be devastating. Plus people would end up talking about one bar too much, opposed to other things about Pattaya.

I want Pattaya-addicts.com to be a strong brand like Thai visa, and I don't want to have that ruined by people saying its the forum of a small bar.

There are ways around it, we could have a bar, (not named Pattaya-addicts) where one moderator/admin is there each night of the week. So when do you want to start?

Donations could probably raise the start up capital but there is still 50k baht monthly running costs!

I can see all that 100% and it would have to be the right deal/arrangement with PA absolutely in the driving seat.

I was thinking slightly outside your box but of somewhere specific (see PM).

Get it sorted for when I come back from Cambodia and I'll do the Kissmas Eve shift. :GoldenSmile1:

Oops I forgot you said moderator/admin lol. :Cry3:

I'm aware that the BM's come to Pattaya on all kinds of budgets and therefore stay all over town, from the most expensive resorts and hotels to the cheapest of guest houses. I would nevertheless suspect one thing many of us have in common is that we hire mopeds for the duration of our stay, normally from our lodgings or a local provider.

Should a PA internet cafe open and offer a moped hire service I would personally be more than happy to make the small extra effort required to ensure I use the PA service as my first choice. Perhaps with PA branded bikes?

I understand that this would require some initial investment, but I'd guess, if other members also made a point of supporting this service, it would quickly become quite profitable. This could then fund further amenities at the PA cafe.

In fact I think this could be so sucessful my only concern would be for any potential damage done to any BM's existing moped hire business.

Am I over estimating how many BM's hire mopeds, or how much loyalty they are likely to show a PA service?

Just a thought.

like a club the more members support it the better it gets for all

I am currently contacting business owners to ask them pledge to donate money/computers/equipment for a FREE internet cafe, in return for onsite advertising.

New computers, aircon, chairs, tables, TV, sofas and all the other stuff.

The idea is to have a free internet cafe / hang out for PA members only and it will be totally free. If non members wish to use the free internet cafe, then they can sign up. As its free, might need a fair usage policy during peak hours.

I will try and get companies to pay for the computers, TV's, furniture and running costs, in return for their advertising on location.

The idea is to have some sofas inside and a table and chairs out the front, where people can buy a drink and sit out the front occassionally. (not a bar or girls etc) The drink sales and stuff may cover some of the staff costs, need 3-4 full time staff, but the prices of drink will be very cheap.

I would go there often just to socialise.

Would you use it? If enough people agree to use it, it would help me persuade business owners to sponsor this idea.

Just need to price up a location. The ideal location would be somewhere that is good for people watching, maybe opposite or next to a bar.

If anyone else wants to make a pledge, please feel free and you will get a place on the wall of the shop! and maybe some other perks.

Update

Ideas so far. - to separate us from other internet cafes

1. Two internet connections with different companies to try and maximise online continuity. Guys who work online, can come down when there internet connection fails

2. Private VPNs on all machines, to prevent surfing restrictions and to keep things more private.

3. May set up the computers so that they restart as new everytime, so all the files are wipped off daily, this decreases the risk of someone planting something.

4. Each computer and modem gets its own battery supply, so if the power goes off, internet will continue

5. Surge protection for all computers and laptops

6. CAT3 lighting to reduce glare

7. Open 24 hours

8. Free calls to 40 different countries (I have the world package on skype)

Items pledged so far.

One computer and modem.

Kettle

2 skype heads

Still Need sponsorship for.

Settees for inside

Chair and table outside

Fans

Outdoor concrete table and benches

Sandwich toaster

Cabling

Signage

Paint

Microwave

Television

DVD Player

Ethernel switch

UPS x 6

Lighting CAT3

Headsets x 6

Extra mains sockets

Flood protection

Surge protection leads x 6

Webcams

Start up costs 393,400

Running costs

Internet x 2 2400 baht

Electric 12000

Rent 12000

water 400

Satellite 1500

VPN costs 756

staff x 4 24000

PC an maintenance 3000

Cleaning products

Licenses 1000

Monthly fixed costs 56,256

I would also like to make this place a full time drop off point for camillian social center (just for addicts members)

Camillian need

Paper

Rice

Clothes

Soap etc

Money Donation Box - this box will be locked and controlled by camillian

Looking & thinking about this again I think it is a good idea but a good meeting point to chill & get away from the madness of Pattaya should be a sober place but water coffee & food would be good.

The running costs are expensive IMO & I am shocked at what it would cost to run this type of venue each month.

That said interesting & could be a super venue & a great meeting point.

Banners or adverts on the wall would be great & I am sure certain businesses would in time want to advertise there products etc.

Name PA Internet Cafe ????? Meeting point for the boys. :GoldenSmile1: :GoldenSmile1: :GoldenSmile1:

i think the idea is OK but don't underestimate the headaches of keeping a quality small shop up and running. I think it will take more time and effort than one might estimate.

Being virtual on the internet also has a sense of anonymity that brick and mortar does not so it might attract some attention.

A great meeting point will be the star attraction, I have had positive responce already.

I just need to find a cheap location.. does anyone here have a property suitable, with a reasonable deal, I don't have the money to pay stupid key money or 100 years rent upfront etc.

I know businesses on soi chaiyaboon are 12000 a month rent.

I sent you a PM last night regarding a possible location.

Just to play devils advocate :o A meeting point/internet cafe, maybe  especially if you are getting others to provide the capital :D

Bars/gogo's yep everyone knows everything and everyone is "connected". The truth is that as soon as such a venue was known to be associated/co-owned by the addicts forum the bargaining chip just increased by a magnitude of 10 in favour of the powers that be. As for running it by; 'team management', anyone that's been there already knows that will not work.

Motorcycle rental? yes but not Addicts itself, have a branded addict provider who pays a % to the addicts internet cafe. You only need to look around when asking, "how hard can that/this be", and see the number of failures and those struggling, to discover how hard it can be! Successful gogos? can count them on one hand, successful bars two hands, compare that with how many there are.

All successful business's take time and effort and lots of it, plus a firm hand on the steering wheel, not 20 such hands pulling in different direction/opinions.

I am aware that what I have said will be shouted down but then it does not run with the general enthusiasm, it is based on actual experience including the hardest knocks.

On the above point alone, is that a point in favour of doing it through an association with the right (?) existing business from PA's PoV rather than going it alone and conversely, is that a negative factor from such a business' PoV?

Reading through the above extracts again, I think the latter is what they are implying/saying, so probably this is a stupid Q. :Circle_Sharks:

Thanks alot, no need for two! If you are feeling generous, just get a better one, opposed to a 200 baht one.

We will try and get some English tea bags available for free, for a good cuppa!

in that case i'll donate a load of tea bags and pledge to keep sending them when your stock is low!!

its a good idea and i think it will take off, it would turn out to be a great meeting place. good luck and hope its up and running by janaury

The monthly running costs could be offset by asking all bm's who are over on holiday,to bring and donate to the cafe some foodstuffs/drink from their home country which you cannot get in thailand. You could set up a thread to find out what the expats miss from home and appeal to bm's to bring and donate them to the cafe.sell such items to expats at 100% profit and ensure foot traffic from both donater's and buyers looking for some thing they miss from home.just an idea.
