New Air Tax for Brits?

swagman

Recommended Posts

Something on the BBC News the other night talking about a new (another) Green Tax on Long Haul Air Travel, the repoter said this tax will add around £400+

for a family of 4 flying to Oz. (Quick- sell your shares in Aussie hotels now)

Anyone know how much extra they intend to screw out of us for a flight to Thailand & when's it set to start?

My thoughts are us Brits already pay far to much for a lot of things & Air travel long being high up on the list.

Are you taking about the new APD tax increase, which came into effect this week? :Circle_Sharks:

Air Passenger Duty rises by up to 55%

A plane taking off from Heathrow Airport Air tax has risen tenfold since Air Passenger Duty was introduced

Airline passengers flying out of the UK now face more expensive flights following a controversial rise in Air Passenger Duty (APD).

Flight taxes rise by up to 55% from Monday as part of the changes, which will generate an estimated £2.3bn for the Treasury.

Long-haul flights will be worst hit and family holidays are likely to be more expensive.

The move has been criticised by airlines, which fear lost business.

Airlines say the increased cost could put off tourists and business people travelling to the UK. Critics also point out that family holidays could become much more expensive.

The travel and aviation industries are already struggling after the recession, as people cut down on foreign holidays.

A group of four people flying economy to Florida will now pay £240 in tax, an increase of 33%. And flying economy to popular holiday destinations in the Caribbean will cost £75 in APD, up from £50 last year and £40 two years ago.

Passengers travelling in premium economy, business and first class will also see hefty increases in the duty.

APD, initially introduced at just £5 for UK and European flights and £10 for longer-haul journeys in 1994, only rose to £10 for economy flights in Europe and £40 for flights further afield by 2007. In the past three years, it has increased dramatically.

The new tax add's about £35 to the tax we were paying before, but there is some good news Etihad have just started to drop there prices for next summer, flights are £680 compared with £900 last year so if you flying out July / Aug 2011 I would book your tickets now

I wonder if our dear leader will be paying it for HIS family this Crimbo in LOS?

I'm sure all those who have just lost their jobs won't mind seeing Cameron sunning himself at their expense.

Late last night I went online and entered my expected holiday dates for next summer and 3 websites came up with around £690 return with Etihad flying from Manchester Airport. I might book these flights in the very near future I just need to clarify one or two things at work before I book.

DOOH!- Just Bloody Triffic that is! Now I'm really pi**ed off, gonna get hammerd tonight (Sat) on a bottle of Famous Grouse, at least I'll get to sleep with a (daft) smile.

You know guys what really narks me? My wife's sister who lives in Finland get's to LoS 4 times a year (takes her 2 kids too) yet she's not married or in great paying employment.

When we tell her "Air fairs here are so much" she just laughs! None of her sisters Thai mates who live there seem to have any difficulty in going every 3 months or so,

& think we're being 'Cheap Charlies'! -they just don't understand us at all. I mean- how the FCUK can they do it?

But we're still going- just got to dig even deeper & longer.

I was under the impression you don't pay VAT on flights from the UK. Receipts will state "including tax" but that doesn't include VAT.

Last year I was trading in Nectar points to help with my flight and I had a reduced figure and I ask for a further discount because of VAT and I was told that the price doesn't include VAT.

There were discussions in parliament a few years back about trying to introduce it in a effort to cover the costs of greenhouse gasses/polution but I don't think it ever made it even as a bill.

At their expense? Prior to giving birth Samantha Cameron was earning two or three times more than her husband anyway, reportedly 300 to 400 grand a year.

Sure she can afford a holiday in Thailand on that.

Typical anti-Tory response for the sake of being anti-Tory :Insanity:

You can not have a tax on a tax! That is why a few years ago the govnm had to remove the 10% new car tax.

I think it is a EU directive!

Just booked a flight with Emirates for early December tax is now £100.94

Yeah, and I suppose Cameron's other half will be paying for all the security as well?!

  • 3 weeks later...

I've just booked my flights for next July/August

I'm flying with Etihad and the flights cost me £690

I booked the flights on Etihads own website and as part of the booking process I was also able to book my seats.

I booked mine last week through Skyscanner, I was quite impressed actually. Recently I messed up and paid £700 for a non direct flight both ways from Heathrow to Bangkok via Singapore with Singapore airlines (not an enjoyable flight with the lay over times on the return)

The other day I have booked Direct flights both ways from Heathrow TO Bangkok with Thai Airways for £690 from the 28th Jan - 18th Feb.

Thats a good price. My local airport is Manchester International and there are no direct flights from Manchester. So I have booked with Etihad. They are a good airline and I only spend just under 2 1/2 hours in transit at Abu Dhabi airport. Whilst there I usually go to the piano bar and have a couple of beers

have heard if you book flights with a stop in a country closer to home(amsterdam for example) you probably wont pay the extra tax ... makes sense i suppose

With regard to flights and taxes you will still pay if you go from UK to say Amsterdam and then LOS there must be 24 hrs between flights to be exempt so it means an overnight stay in AMS unless you get to AMS by some other method

Lets hope some clever bus operator starts a service soon !

Fly there with low cost Airline. You would still pay tax but much less!
