BANGKOK, 21 October 2010 –Lao Airlines announced Wednesday it will start a circular route, 29 October, linking the Lao capital, Vientiane, the World Heritage site of Luang Prabang and Pattaya resort, on Thailand’s eastern seaboard.

Lao Airlines will operate a twice weekly service on Friday and Sunday using a 70-seat ATR72-500. Fares were not available at press time.

On Friday, the flight will depart from Vientiane at 1140 and arrive in U-Tapao at 1310 then head to Luang Prabang at 1410 and from Luang Prabang, the flight hops back to Vientiane at 1705.

On Sunday, the flight will go from Vientiane to Luang Prabang on the first sector departing at 1140 and from Luang Prabang to U-Tapao at 1300 then from U-Tapao to Vientiane at 1615.

The flight duration between U-Tapao and Vientiane is one hour and fifteen minutes and between Luang Prabang and U-Tapao, two hours and fifteen minutes.

Tourism Authority of Thailand director Pattaya office, Niti Kongkrut, told TTR Weekly that he was confident that there would be demand from Thai residents on the eastern seaboard to visit Laos.

“ Also tour operators can easily organise a package tour to Vientiane or Luang Prabang especially for Russian tourists. It will be convenient for them because Russians do not need to apply for visa to enter Laos. Russian expatriates living in Pattaya can also visit Vientiane to renew their Thailand visa.”

Mr Niti also said that according to Lao authorities, they will promote the route to draw tourists from Kunming, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to visit the Thai beach resort via either Vientiane or Luang Prabang.

Mr Nitti said there was an opportunity for more international scheduled flights to Pattaya.

“A Singaporean businessman showed interest in operating scheduled flights from Southwest China, probably Xiamen or Kunming. The aircraft would probably be leased from Singapore Airlines.”

U-Tapao Pattaya International Airport is undergoing an upgrade to help tourism expansion at resorts along the eastern seaboard. It will also act as a relief airport for flights that need to be diverted from Suvarnabhumi Airport in the case of poor visibility, mainly seasonal morning fog, during the cool season months.

Authorities confirmed a new terminal of about 25,200 sqm, will be built to raise capacity from 400 to 2,000 passengers per peak hour. The new terminal will also have two aero-bridges plus the current 49 remote parking bays. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2011 and be completed within 540 days.

Trust me, it's paradise. This is where the hungry come to feed.

For mine is a generation that circles the globe and searches for something we haven't tried before.

So never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay the welcome.

Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience. And if it hurts, you know what? It's probably worth it.
