Hi,

This is a pretty common issue, hotels and a lot of public places, even some of the bigger ISP companies that you may have for internet in your house, block the typical SMTP port which is 25, they do it to try and prevent spam coming from their networks. A lot of email providers will sometimes give you an alternative outgoing port that you can use instead, it looks like for Dodo it's port 366 that is the alternate. So if you opened up your account settings in Windows Mail and went to the SMTP section, switch the port from 25 to 366 and give it a shot, that may work for you. If that doesn't work just call or write them and ask what their alternative outgoing mail SMTP port is.

Best of luck, that's definitely a frustrating thing, take care.

In my opinion it is more likely that your ISP requires authentification for outgoing emails when you are not on their service.

This is common in order to avoid spammers using their servers to spam.

Where the setting is depends on the client you are using, but is usually found under advanced settings.

There will be a tick box that says something like "my ISP requires authentification when sending"

Tick that.

There should also be a tick box that allows you to use the stored username and password that you client uses

for retreiving emails. Tick that also and you should be good to go.

You may need to restart your email client.

Good luck.

i have a similar problem when in thailand but can access my isp email but not send email from thailand but can from many other countries one night out on the booze with laamok i asked why and some other computer geek/boffin that was there and probably just as drunk explained it was the open packets or some thing like that that isp emails will not accept but email accounts like hotmail no problem and thailand was one of the few countries to do what ever they do

I had exactly the same issue during my March trip to Thailand / Philippines. I hope your ISP has a more clued-up help desk than my UK one - they managed to totally screw up all settings on my laptop with a knock-on effect on my PC when I returned home. I finally figured out that an email address with my ISP (i.e. [email protected]) was restrictive when travelling and have now switched to Hotmail, which I have had no problems accessing from other countries.

Yes,

I tried this, but it just kept re booting the Authentification box., over and over.

I have no trouble with my Yahoo account, so guess I better talk to DODO, If I can ever get thru to someone who actually knows.

Thanks for you guy's help.

Cheers,

Mike

The problem here is that many ISPs will not accept mail into their SMTP servers that does not originate from their own network - ie when you are connected at home.  This is, as others have said, to stop spammers.

The other problem with ISP email addresses is that they expire when you move on - so the best thing to do is get yourself a gmail address that will stay with you forever and you can use from any computer in the world.  Built in virus checking and an ace spam filter.  As it's free get a couple = one for serious stuff and one for more "private" mail.

You could, of course, get your own domain with the Family version of google apps and this will only cost $10/year and is much more professional.  you can me [email protected], or whatever suits - providing the domain is there.
