i dont normally worry about takeing my phone to thailand but im gonna be there for a month at christmas (and ill get shot if i dont call home a few times especially christmas day) and i know its cheaper to get a thai simcard, can i just take an unlocked mobile with me and buy a thai simcard when there and just buy credit when i need to make a call

Yup. You can buy a new sim from any 7/11 and add some credit to it. New sim will cost you 50 baht and rest of it is "up to you".

You can get a Thai sim-card everywhere, u can get in from the airport, 7-11, family mart.

:Hit_Self: I guessed they saw me coming at the airport, cause I paid 399bath for a sim card and 300min, in 3 days I was out of minutes.

i would get a sim at 7/11 like i do every year.just ask them to fit it and put a 100b of credit on for you its lasts a long time.i also take an old phone so if i lose it its not a problem.

I took an old phone as I did not want to loose my HTC Desire and bring attention to a flash phone. It needed to be unlocked so I took it to Tukcom and they unlocked it in 15 mins for 250 baht. Thai sim was from 7/11 and added 100 baht credit which I asked them to put on for me (very helpful). Story done and now the phone is filling with girls numbers :)

Yes, take an old phone and get a Thai sim. Makes it a hell of a lot easier, and the rates are quite cheap.

I agree 100%, take an old phone (not your new IPhone) in case it gets stolen and as every one has said, get a sim card from a 7/11

Don't consider global roaming unless you have to, it is firkin expensive

Is it that bad? I'm still considering grabbing my iPhone 3G as it has maps (including Thailand), books and iPod :)

Yes and no, the street sellers would steal it at the drop of a hat but why would you need maps? Pattaya is not that big and the maps on here and the web would suffice.

This one has GPS, found it very useful when you found yourself drunk in the middle of nowhere :) also useful for directions and distances.

I use a Skype application on my iPhone to call home. I stay in hotels with free wifi, so it is cheap to use. Much cheaper than a Thai phone and no one will know where you are calling from.

For local use get a cheap phone and the cheapest local sim with 100 baht credit is more than enough. Throw the sim at the airport.

Quick question for any of you guys in the US. My wife(Thai) wants a new phone (blackberry) that she can use in the US and then come over to LOS and pop in a New Sim and use it there also. What are my options?

does she want a Thai version of the phone?

If it works in the US..yes...she would be thrilled to have the Thai Language on it. I just want to find something that I can also put on some kind of inexpensive service here in the states. (at&t, t-mobile..whatever)

My wife is very happy with her BlackBerry 8830 World Edition. She had it unlocked and can buy SIM cards anywhere but for Japan. A true world phone you can use with most bandwidths. I wish my iPhone could make it so easily !

See you soon Mike
