Correct Pronounciation

with transcription, it may look similar, but if you heard the two pronounced, I think you'd see they're definitely different. the island is เกาะล้าน gaw(L) laan (H).

 

incidentally, what is it from? Not sure of the meaning at all??

To a Thai they sound totally different. The island would be low tone and then high tone.

So koh laen for my pic and koh laan for the island (with appropriate tones)?

 

It's the name of a place up in buntharik in Ubon. I went to stay with the family up there and after spending about a day scouring google earth I'm pretty sure it was very very close to where I was staying.

 

My TG told me "buntharik" at the time but I naively assumed it was the name of a town, not like a whole county!

 

As she never mentioned Koh Laen I suspect she'll be quite surprised when I mention it next trip.

They are both totally different sounds. The Koh as in island is pronounced low, very short and with the initial consenant sounding half way between an English 'g' and a 'k'. The Khoo as in your initial example is mid tone, aspirated (you could blow a candle out saying it) and long.
