House project in Issan

Recommended Posts

Nearly finished the master bedroom with en suite in what is hopefully going to be my retirement home. Hopefully showing board members that you dont have to live in a hut in the north east if you dont want to. I let my GF carry out the design and most of the furniture is hand made allthough it is some king of ply which they cap and stain She decided to have a dividing set of cabinets splitting the room basically in two with a revolving panel in the centre for a flatscreen telly as after reading my book thai fever she noted that at times I may want my own space so I can watch TV in bed or rotate the screen and have my own little study ( bless her ).

Any way a bit boring but I thought some members who are thinking about moving might like to see you can have your home comforts even in remote areas.

nice one. any more pics of the house? kitchen, bathroom, gardens?

Kitchen not installed yet and is a bare room at the moment as this is a take your time project. Only have two pics of the outside of the house which I have attached. The garden is not finished either but the idea is when I hopefully retire there I want to be on site to direct building of walls, lighting, drive, garage etc. The plan at the moment is just spend money when we can afford it with air con to the master bedroom next, telly for bedroom etc. There are allready three bedroms ( 2nd bedroom has AC allready and finished) third is basic room with room for another large one on the first floor if we want to. Lounge is finished and we have a family bathroom fitted allthough just basic spec. Still has what my GF calls downstairs which is your traditional 8m square 2 walled existing accomadation with tin roof where all the cooking and eating is still carried out with the old 4 foot sq water bath for showering etc allthough a normal toilet is fitted for conveience. Not to keen on using it myself as when it rains you tend to find the odd snake likes to shelter there. Alos have to fit a water cylinder soon as the house is off the village mains and some evenings there is not enough pressure for the showers in the main house.

really nice place and what sort of cost was it much cheaper than in your own country for a similar standard ..could never see the point of retiring and end up living in some concrete block shack and a tin roof

Well Big C what can I say? ..but I'm very impressed! I would love to see how it's progress if months to come, sort of '"Well now I've done it- how are others doing it"? Or if I'm honest what idea's can I pick up? Bit old woman-ish there, sorry!

Same for me Swagman its always interesting to see what people are building and any new ideas plus of course the down sides. The bedroom as I stated earlier was all built by hand by a guy and a labourer but took longer than expected as the guy working didnt turn up every day as his mother was poorly, some aunty died, had to put tyre on bycycle, fish were escaping from pond or some other excuse. It didnt matter cost wise as he was on a price but you just cant expect them to finish to a deadline. GF did not get phased by this at all and when his Aunty died even went along to help at house with arrangements/food on burial day.

Happy days

Build costs dont seem to be expensive in thailand but when you want western up market sanitaryware, bevelled glass etc its not much cheaper in thailand if at all. To fit the bedroom and bathroom out to the standard shown was about 150000baht allthough it would have been cheaper but the bathroom was originally all tiled end then she added the wood features to match the bedroom.

Looks great (apart from the wooden throne surround) :), perhaps you could give us a break down of the costs.

Bedroom and ensuite cost approx 150 thousand baht allthough that included all mirrors, mattress, lamps etc. The ensuite was all tiled and complete then when she did the bedroom decided to add wood around the throne and basin to match the bedrrom. She ahs a good eye but I Have to keep an eye on the costs.

Dear God I know just what you mean, but for me the costs were not from my wife (she works in UK so understands) but from Mum-in-law. Kind of my daughter shall be having this, those & that and so on!

Dad was just happy to see it built well. It was one steep learning curve about being tactful!

But it looks by the pics that you have fitted the place out with high quality furnishings & when the time comes to move in I think you won't regret it.

It's obvious I know- but when you have the party perhaps lock the doors keeping it outside (I did) as villagers didn't seem to have much respect for my pride & joy- could cause a falangs temper to flare, know what I mean?

For instance some men were having a piss (outside) around the back.... against the wall of my new housel!

Swagman

Ive only met direct family to date but will remember to put electric cattle fence around wall of house if I have a party that should shock the dirty bastards. Funny a couple of other reports Ive read says that thais dont respect the house much. On your report you stated you put a bore hole in and then filtered the water so you can drink it. Do youknow if you can filter off the town supply and still drink the water?

BIG C.

The town water is not fit to drink for sure - filtered or otherwise, it's ok for washing cloaths & when heated washing the dishes or even a hot shower.

But by songkran time the lake water level is low & the water at the taps is light brown! (think rusty) Ok for your washing machine I suppose but that's all, we don't risk the staining.!

Our quite large & important village (it forms 5 Moo's) has one of those tall steel water towers seen everywhere, it's not at all backward as largeThai villages go-

so I think this could be the situation in most places outside large towns or cities.

Water is delivered to order by truck, In large sealed plastic bottles in sizes from 1 gall -10 gall.

It's very cheap being produced in a big factory somewhere. I've drank it many times -no problems.

If i remember correctly our 3 stage filter cost 6KB but it was British made -not Thai or Chinese.

Hope this helps

Swagman
