He was from the era of snooker when you followed the stars for fun, rather than watch the match. RIP, Alex.

And in his day the players were characters and well known, not like the cardboard cut outs they've got today.

God bless you Alex.

A real character, he had been fighting cancer for nearly 10 years, couldn't believe the recent pictures of him, a sad loss R.I.P.

That's sad to hear, though I have no doubt he'd had a rollicking life and seen and done more than the rest of us put together.

That's a bit of a trip down memory lane for an ancient sod like me - I have fond memories of Weekend afternoons sitting with my old Dad in front of the black & white TV watching the snooker legends play back in the UK, coal fire burning in the grate, Mum in the kitchen cooking up dinner.......

Snooker was funny on TV back then - Commentator: "he's going for the green", followed by "that's the ball in the top left corner of your screen" - because all the balls were grey as far as we were concerned :GoldenSmile1:

R.I.P. Alex, thanks for the memories.

:Greetings9:

Met Alex a few times he used to come to the island to share a few beerski's with his good mate Ollie Reed! He was a gentleman to which nothing was too much trouble and he always took time to chat with his fans at exhibition matches or when he was socialising in the pub!

I met him twice, albeit briefly and saw him play at Sheffield in the early eighties. People were queueing to buy him drinks at the bar in between sessions! Also relieved himself in a plant pot during the tournament as I seem to remember. From a different era, when sportsmen seemed like real people who wanted to entertain the crowd and the fans forgave them their shortcomings. RIP Alex, you will be missed but never forgotten...

R I P Alex Higgins, the man that made snooker fashionable

I watched Alex play doubles with Jimmy White many years ago at an exhibition match in Birmingham, it was outrageous the way he potted some of the balls, and the banter whilst sipping his vodka and orange was priceless.
