Living in Chiang Mai

THAI LIE

Recommended Posts

Has anyone any experience with owning a business of any sort in Chiang Mai?

I'm looking at moving over to Thailand with a friend and you seem to get a lot more for your baht up north and I also think I'd be less likely to die of liver failure than if I lived in Patts.

A collegue of mine lives in Chiang Mai and knows 3 bar owners quite well. All three bars in varied locations are struggling, despite hard work from the owners. Chiang Mai has been hit perhaps even more by the tourist downturn than Pattaya because "nice" people who visit Chiang Mai have been put off visiting Thailand.

Chiang Mai is a good place to live if you want a quiet life, better climate, cheaper to live, and great scenery. Just don't buy a bar.

If you take sinkorswim as an example then its not a great outlook

he was living up there for sometime, 6 years?

but chose to move to pattaya and buy a gogo.

Like any of the provincial cities bar business they fluctuate wildly so you need a bit of wedge to survive the low seasons.

Who is fit to govern others?

He who governs himself. ?

You might as well have said: nobody.

  • 1 year later...

10 out of my 11 years of living in Thailand I lived here in Chiang Mai (the previous 10 or so years of holidays have been spent mainly in Phuket - Patong beach at first and around the whole country at last).

First thing to say, this is NOT a resort place (not sea at all, ahahahahahahah) and as I like to say the kind of TOURIST that are coming up here are MAINLY not in the monger range... This has been (and partially still is) a "Freak" Eaven (little SEX, more DRUGS and some ROCK N' ROLL) with a fourth option being ALCOHOL.

Yes, it is cheap, safe, nice and you can find almost any goods you were using back home (mainly I am talking about FOOD and HOUSEHOLDS).

Being involved with some business, I can say, maybe you can save on your liver but surely you will loose on your coronary. People up here, are, in my opinion, the lazyest and touchyest in Thailand with no interst nor commitmens in their job (especially if it is a FARANG that hired them), they have not will at all in learning nor in improve thier working skills... Not to mention a very poor attitude toward both working and Farang.

I know generalization is wrong, but that is what I have been through. That is part of the reason why I gave up (ownig / managing a business).

Luckily there are the Burmese, that are slightly better, but recently I noticed a change of attitude even in them...

On the other hand, the GIRLS are known to be the prettiest in Thailand (still with a poor attitude). I prefer the so called (non Thai) Hill Tribes Girls, personally I go pretty well with the Lisu and Thai Yai.
