Tatiana by Martin Cruz Smith.

The fearless investigative reporter Tatiana Petrovna falls to her death from a sixth-floor window in Moscow the same week that a mob billionaire, Grisha Grigorenko, is shot and buried with the trappings due a lord. No one makes the connection, but Arkady is transfixed by the tapes he discovers of Tatiana’s voice, even as she describes horrific crimes hidden by official versions.

The trail leads to Kaliningrad, a Cold War “secret city” and home of the Baltic Fleet, separated by hundreds of miles from the rest of Russia.
Arkady delves into Tatiana’s past and a surreal world of wandering dunes and amber mines.
His only link is a notebook written in the personal code of a translator whose body is found in the dunes.
Arkady’s only hope of decoding the symbols lies in Zhenya, a teenage chess hustler.

Second Watch by J.A. Jance.

Getting old is hell. J. P. Beaumont is finally taking some time off to have knee-replacement surgery.
But instead of taking his mind off work, the operation plunges him into one of the most perplexing and mind blowing mysteries he's ever faced.

A series of dreams takes him back to his early days on the force with the Seattle PD, and then even earlier, to his days in Vietnam, reminding him of people and events he hasn't thought about in years.
Are they just drug-induced hallucinations?
Beaumont isn't so sure.
When tugging on those threads from long ago leads to present-day murders, Beau's suspicions are confirmed.
Some bodies from the second watch just won't stay buried.

A masterful demonstration of J. A. Jance's superb craftsmanship, Second Watch is a thought provoking novel that is also a poignant look at one of the most painful and divisive moments in our history Vietnam and a reminder of the staggering cost of war and the debts we owe to those who served then and those who do now.

Library of the Dead by Glenn Cooper.

The most shocking secret in the history of mankind is about to be revealed ...

A murderer is on the loose on the streets of New York City: nicknamed the Doomsday Killer, he's claimed six victims in just two weeks, and the city is terrified.

Even worse, the police are mystified: the victims have nothing in common, defying all profiling, and all that connects them is that each received a sick postcard in the mail before they died,a postcard that announced their date of death.

In desperation, the FBI assigns the case to maverick agent Will Piper, once the most accomplished serial killing expert in the bureau's history, now on a dissolute spiral to retirement.

Battling his own demons, Will is soon drawn back into a world he both loves and hates, determined to catch the killer whatever it takes.

But his search takes him in a direction he could never have predicted, uncovering a shocking secret that has been closely guarded for centuries.

A secret that once lay buried in an underground library beneath an 8th Century monastery, but which has now been unearthed with deadly consequences.

A select few defend the secret of the library with their lives and as Will closes in on the truth, they are determined to stop him, at any cost ...

My Name Lon. You Like Me? by Derek Sharron.

Traded in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya.

9749272153.jpg
This book is the story of a young woman who worked for years as a Thai bargirl servicing Western sex tourists, beginning at the age of 14. Lon talks about the pressure from her family, especially her mother, to send increasingly larger sums of money home to her family in the rural north of Thailand. This, in turn, causes her to take on increasing more unpleasant Western customers, who are willing to pay premium prices for sex partners they can treat roughly and abusively.

The book offers a rare insight into the Thai prostitution industry and explains where these girls come from (generally poor rural areas), and why they get into this business. This is NOT a book about a woman forced into sexual slavery against her will. Lon comes off as a complainer, blaming everyone else, her mother, her brother, her customers, for poor decisions she made in the quest for more money. In the end, she marries a Westerner and moves to Sweden, where she takes on a job as a stripper?
So while it's tough to feel any real sympathy for Lon, the insights into the Thai prostitution industry are fascinating.

Winner Take Nothing by Ernest Hemingway.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse / Pattaya, Thailand....
We have many like this in the Classics section at *****60 baht

Written when Hemingway was at the height of his creative powers, the stories in Winner Take Nothing glow with the mark of his unique talent.

Hunters, wives, old men of wisdom, waiters, fighters, women loved, women lost: they are all here, living on the raw edge, making love, facing the inevitable reality of death.

The characters, the dialogue, the settings, the remarkable insight could have come only from Hemingway's imagination.
As an introduction to his work, or as an overview of the themes he developed at greater length in his novels, it is a stunningly successful collection.
From one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century.

My Secret Life 1 (Classic Erotica) by Henry Spencer Ashbee.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse / Pattaya, Thailand..

Authorship of the book is mysterious.
Henry Spencer Ashbee, a book collector, writer & bibliographer notable for his particular focus on sexuality is suspected by some to be "Walter".
He is very likely the compiler of the book's index, the provider of some editorial assistance & the person who saw the text into print.
Gershon Legman was 1st to link "Walter" & Ashbee in Legman's introduction to the 1962 reprints of Ashbee's bibliographies.
The 1966 Grove Press edition of My Secret Life included an expanded version of that essay.
More recently, however, Ian Gibson's The Erotomaniac: The Secret Life of Henry Spencer Ashbee (2001, ISBN 0-571-19619-5) provides a detailed review of circumstantial evidence arguing that Ashbee wrote My Secret Life, presumably weaving fantasy & anecdotes from friends in with his own real-life experiences. Just prior to this, in May 2000, Channel 4 UK broadcast a documentary, Walter-The Secret Life of a Victorian Pornographer, which also claimed that Ashbee was Walter.

What's Your Name I'm Fine Thank You: Mugged by Reality in Bangkok and beyond by Roger Beaumont.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse / Pattaya, Thailand..

Reader review;
I’m part of the Bangkok writing scene, having written in the 1980's the international bestseller Thai Gold, which, to my surprise, spawned a huge and whole genre of adventure thrillers based in the bars, backstreets and brothels of Bangkok (and the region) with its colorful characters, from ex spooks and Air America pilots to adventurers of all kinds.
I say this because I want to be up front about knowing Roger, and how much I admire his writing.

There’s few columnists (and I was once one myself) I have ever read anywhere, anytime period as consistently brilliant, original and thought provoking as Roger.
There’s few writers I know of his genius, yes, genius, who have only published one, single work and this is it.
He should have an international readership.
I’m not the only established writer who has urged him innumerable time to sit down and write a bloody book.
I’m still doing so….

Pretty Boy Floyd by Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossana.

The time is 1925. The place, St. Louis, Missouri. Charley Floyd, a good looking, sweet-smiling country boy from Oklahoma, is about to rob his first armored car.
Written by Pulitzer Prize winner Larry McMurtry and his writing partner, Diana Ossana, Pretty Boy Floyd traces the wild career of this legendary American folk hero, a young man so charming that it's hard not to like him, even as he's robbing you at gunpoint.
From the bank heists and shootings that make him Public Enemy Number One to the women who love him, from the glamour-hungry nation that worships him to the G-men who track Charley down, Pretty Boy Floyd is both a richly comic masterpiece and an American tragedy about the price of fame and the corruption of innocence.

The inside story of the one of the most successful British stand up comedians, as told by the person best qualified to reveal all about the man behind the comic, his wife of over 20 years Pamela Stephenson.

Once in a lifetime, there strides upon the stage someone who can truly be called a legend.
Such a person is the inimitable, timeless genius who is Billy Connolly.
His effortlessly wicked whimsy has entranced, enthralled and split the sides of, thousands upon thousands of adoring audiences.

And when he isn't doing that…he's turning in award winning performances on film and television.

He's the man who needs no introduction, and yet he is the ultimate enigma. From a troubled and desperately poor childhood in the docklands of Glasgow he is now the intimate of household names the world over.

How did this happen, who is the real Billy Connolly?
Only one person can answer that question: his wife, Pamela Stephenson.
Pamela’s writing combines the very personal with a frank objectivity that makes for a compelling, moving and hugely entertaining biography. This is the real Billy Connolly.

This genre defining book is now re-released for a new generation of comedy fans, with a stunning package and a new Foreword from the author.
Pamela’s vision of Billy is as true now as it ever was, as groundbreaking, as moving and as laugh out loud funny and here she brings the book fully into its context, as one of the most influential biographies ever written.

Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl Mass Market
by Anne Frank.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse / Pattaya, Thailand.

Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank's remarkable diary has since become a world classic, a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit.
In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen year old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding.
For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the "Secret Annex" of an old office building.
Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever present threat of discovery and death.
In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period.
By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.

“The first of my father’s illusions was that bears could survive the life lived by human beings, and the second was that human beings could survive a life led in hotels.”
So says John Berry, son of a hapless dreamer, brother to a cadre of eccentric siblings, and chronicler of the lives lived, the loves experienced, the deaths met, and the myriad strange and wonderful times encountered by the family Berry.
Hoteliers, pet-bear owners, friends of Freud (the animal trainer and vaudevillian, that is), and playthings of mad fate, they “dream on” in a funny, sad, outrageous, and moving novel by the remarkable author of A Prayer for Owen Meany and Last Night in Twisted River.

The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky,

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse / Pattaya, Thailand.

Returning to Russia from a sanitarium in Switzerland, the Christ-like epileptic Prince Myshkin finds himself enmeshed in a tangle of love, torn between two women, the notorious kept woman Nastasya and the pure Aglaia, both involved, in turn, with the corrupt, money-hungry Ganya.
In the end, Myshkin’s honesty, goodness, and integrity are shown to be unequal to the moral emptiness of those around him.
In her revision of the Garnett translation, Anna Brailovsky has corrected inaccuracies wrought by Garnett’s drastic anglicization of the novel, restoring as much as possible the syntactical structure of the original.

Nuremberg Diary by Gustave Mark Gilbert.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse / Pattaya, Thailand.

In August 1945 Great Britain, France, the USSR, and the United States established a tribunal at Nuremberg to try military and civilian leaders of the Nazi regime.
G. M. Gilbert, the prison psychologist, had an unrivaled firsthand opportunity to watch and question the Nazi war criminals.
With scientific dispassion he encouraged Göering, Speer, Hess, Ribbentrop, Frank, Jodl, Keitel, Streicher, and the others to reveal their innermost thoughts.
In the process Gilbert exposed what motivated them to create the distorted Aryan Utopia and the nightmarish worlds of Auschwitz, Dachau, and Buchenwald.
Here are their day-to-day reactions to the trial proceedings; their off the record opinions of Hitler, the Third Reich, and each other; their views on slave labor, death camps, and the Jews; their testimony, feuds, and desperate maneuverings to dissociate themselves from the Third Reich's defeat and Nazi guilt.
Dr. Gilbert's thorough knowledge of German, deliberately informal approach, and complete freedom of access at all times to the defendants give his spellbinding, chilling study an intimacy and insight that remains unequaled.

"Mr Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound?"

The terrible spectacle of the beast, the fog of the moor, the discovery of a body: this classic horror story pits detective against dog, rationalism against the supernatural, good against evil.
When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead on the wild Devon moorland with the footprints of a giant hound nearby, the blame is placed on a family curse.
It is left to Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson to solve the mystery of the legend of the phantom hound before Sir Charles' heir comes to an equally gruesome end.
The Hound of the Baskervilles gripped readers when it was first serialised and has continued to hold its place in the popular imagination.
