Falcon: At The Court of Siam by John Hoskin.

1016209.jpg

Set toward the end of the seventeenth century, Falcon at the Court of Siam recounts the true story of Constantine Phaulkon, a Greek of low birth who spectacularly rose to fame, and infamy, as King Narai's favorite courtier and in effect, if not name, First Minister of Siam.
No other foreigner, before or since, has ever held such a position of power and influence in Siam.
Fleeing from his home on Cephalonia at the age of 11, the Greek became a seaman on English merchant ships for the next twenty years, and then enjoyed a meteoric rise to power in Siam, all the time walking a political tightrope between the ill fated wooing of English and then French allies, and his attempts to outwit dangerous enemies at the Siamese Court who were inflamed by jealousy and anger at his arrogance and ambition.
Against a backdrop of pageantry and peril, Phaulkon pursued a destiny of greatness that he believes was his.
Was he a man who would become king?
A loyal servant to King Narai? Or simply an arrogant, conniving foreigner bent on his own material gain?

Son of a Grifter: The Twisted Tale of Sante and Kenny Kimes, the Most Notorious Con Artists in America: A Memoir by the Other Son
by Kent Walker, Mark Schone.

Reader review;
Entertaining, shocking (in terms of her child abuse, mostly) and bizarre.
Walker's life is almost like a controlled psych experiment of the effects of criminal behavior on a child.
Luckily, he turned out ok but his brother didn't, the reader, like Walker, can't really understand or know how and why Kimes was so compulsively, insanely criminal.
We can guess that her impoverished unstable upbringing, which is mysterious given her compulsive lying, had much to do with it. Walker also credits a neighbor for intervening and giving him some stabilizing influence in his life when he needed it; the men in her life were too much under her sway to be good parents for Walker. Interesting that this neighbor's husband was a retired cop; this would be the perfect couple since she could be the mother figure and a cop could spot Kimes' pathology and not be taken in by her.

I won't give it away, but this new edition comes with an epilogue that is every bit as surprising as the rest of the book.
Needless to say, Kimes was a mystery and a shyster from a family of mysterious shysters, apparently.

My favorite scene involves Kimes attempting to beat a summons by having a friend dress up as her, as he put it, "identical twin snowbunnies" or some such weirdness, and show up claiming that the 'wrong' Sante had been served! Walker states this was the kind of insanity and boldness that Kimes not only would pull, but could suck other people into participating in.

Written in a down-to-earth style that moves along briskly.
Fun, if unnerving and weird. I'm amazed that Walker emerged as a decent person; what a testament to how intervening in the lives of youth at risk can pay off. Hats off to him for surviving this insanity.

How to Cook Your Daughter: A Memoir by Jessica Hendra & Blake Morrison.

Traded in today @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya..
217386.jpg

Her dad wrote bestseller Father Joe, but left out a few things.
This is the poignant and ultimately hopeful memoir of a young girl's struggle to live a normal childhood in the '70's and to overcome sexual abuse by her famous father.

Jessica Hendra wanted the truth to be told about her father after the publication of his supposedly confessional book, Father Joe.
Her story about how he sexually abused her sent ripples of shock through the media.

Readers will see these days through the bewildered eyes of young Jessica and her sister, Kathy, who cowered while the parties went on and on, who couldn't believe that the white powder in the fridge was cocaine and not baking soda, who just wanted a normal life.

As a member of the inner circle of both the Monty Python group, an original editor of the National Lampoon, and the man who launched the careers of John Belushi and Chevy Chase, Tony Hendra was often surrounded by famous faces.
Hendra mentions many moments of comedy and humour from her unique childhood.
With insight, a sense of humour, and a beautifully earnest, sensitive voice, Hendra tells a story that too many readers can relate to, that of a young woman whose world spins out of control after someone she trusts sexually abuses her.

No. 7 Ocean Drive is a gorgeous, multi million dollar beachfront estate in the Hamptons, where money and privilege know no bounds.
But its beautiful gothic exterior hides a horrific past: it was the scene of a series of depraved killings that have never been solved. Neglected, empty, and rumored to be cursed, it's known as the Murder House, and locals keep their distance.

Detective Jenna Murphy used to consider herself a local, but she hasn't been back since she was a girl.
Trying to escape her troubled past and rehabilitate a career on the rocks, the former New York City cop hardly expects her lush and wealthy surroundings to be a hotbed of grisly depravity.
But when a Hollywood power broker and his mistress are found dead in the abandoned Murder House, the gruesome crime scene rivals anything Jenna experienced in Manhattan.
And what at first seems like an open and shut case turns out to have as many shocking Secrets as the Murder House itself, as Jenna quickly realizes that the mansion's history is much darker than even the town's most salacious gossips could have imagined. As more bodies surface, and the secret that Jenna has tried desperately to escape closes in on her, she must risk her own life to expose the truth before the Murder House claims another victim.

Full of the twists and turns that have made James Patterson the world's #1 bestselling writer, THE MURDER HOUSE is a chilling, page turning story of murder, money, and revenge.

Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang.

Reader review;

Wild Swans is a magnificent book, telling the story of a family over three generations from the Boxer Rebellion, to the People's Revolution and the Cultural Revolutions.

It can be said that China has a most colourful history, but this story is very very black in parts.

Wild Swans will bring you on a journey of love and hope, and it will also throw you into a pit of despair.

Jung Changs experiences through her own eyes and that of her family are brought to life in this book.

The imagery is vivid and the emotions will grab you and tie you down.

Whilst reading Wild Swans I felt anger and hatred at Mao and his minions, I found the events of the cultural revolution insane, Why?

I must have asked this a hundred times, yet Changs explains Mao's magnetism, his ability to manipulate the masses, and the fear he drove deep into the people's hearts.

With one hand he would offer hope and with the other he would bring suffering.

Wild Swans is a prime example of the fight of the human spirit, it is within us all and Changs has brought her family's spirit to life in this book.

If you are considering going to China read this book, it gives a great insight into the minds of the Chinese people.

All though times have changed, they are still a tough, hard worker and honest people who simply hope for a good life.

This is an absolutely superb book, just couldn't put it down. ,
Ludlum is an expert in his field, thoroughly researches the geographic areas where the story begins and ends.
I always feel so involved in the story.
So easy to visualize what is happening at all times.
Vivid detail.. One can learn a lot when reading Ludlum's novels chock full of scientific and technological information, government involvements/actions/operatives, what really goes on behind closed doors/other countries.

The Way of the Knife: The CIA, a Secret Army, and a War at the Ends of the Earth by Mark Mazzetti.

Mozzetti.jpg

A Pulitzer Prize winning reporter’s riveting account of the CIA’s transformation after 9/11 and the new American way of war

The most momentous change in American warfare over the past decade has taken place in the corners of the world where large armies can’t go.
The CIA, originally created as a Cold War espionage service, is now more than ever a paramilitary agency ordered by the White House to kill off America’s enemies.
In The Way of the Knife, Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Mark Mazzetti recounts the untold story of America’s shadow war, one that blurred the lines between soldiers and spies and lowered the bar for waging war across the globe.
This new approach, carried out by CIA operatives and special operations troops, has been embraced by Washington as a lower-risk and cost effective alternative to the messy wars of occupation, but as Mazzetti demonstrates in this revealing book, the way of the knife has created enemies just as it has killed them.
