Early One Morning by Robert Ryan.

2556402.jpg

In the flamboyant Twenties, Englishman William Grover-Williams and Frenchman Robert Benoist were fierce rivals racing their elegant Bugattis on the glittering European race circuits.
Not only is the World Championship in their sights, but they have both fallen for the sensuous charms of the extravagantly beautiful Eve Aubicq.

But when war breaks out, everything changes.
Paris is in the iron grip of German occupation and Robert and William join the Special Operations Executive to help the French Resistance undermine the brutal occupying regime.
Their missions involve utmost courage and daring in the face of the horrors of war.
Based on a true story of British covert activity and the French Resistance during the Second World War, this is a gripping novel of heroism, self-sacrifice, love and betrayal.

The Places in Between by Rory Stewart.

In January 2002 Rory Stewart walked across Afghanistan, surviving by his wits, his knowledge of Persian dialects and Muslim customs, and the kindness of strangers.
By day he passed through mountains covered in nine feet of snow, hamlets burned and emptied by the Taliban, and communities thriving amid the remains of medieval civilizations.
By night he slept on villagers' floors, shared their meals, and listened to their stories of the recent and ancient past.
Along the way Stewart met heroes and rogues, tribal elders and teenage soldiers, Taliban commanders and foreign aid workers.
He was also adopted by an unexpected companion a retired fighting mastiff he named Babur in honor of Afghanistan's first Mughal emperor, in whose footsteps the pair was following.
Through these encounters, by turns touching, confounding, surprising, and funny, Stewart makes tangible the forces of tradition, ideology, and allegiance that shape life in the map's countless places in between.

Hegemony or Survival is Noam Chomsky's essential polemic on American foreign policy.

Noam Chomsky, the world's foremost intellectual activist, presents an irrefutable analysis of America's pursuit of total domination and the catastrophic consequences that are sure to follow.

From the funding of repressive regimes to the current 'war on terror', from the toppling of governments opposing its beliefs to the invasion of Iraq, America pursues its global strategy no matter what the cost. With the rigour and insight that have made him our most important unraveller of accredited lies.
Noam Chomsky reveals the truth and the true motives behind America's quest for dominance and seeks also to show how the world may yet step back from the brink.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan.

22732374._UY200_.jpg

A novel of the cruelty of war, and tenuousness of life and the impossibility of love.

Richard Flanagan's story of Dorrigo Evans, an Australian doctor haunted by a love affair with his uncle's wife, journeys from the caves of Tasmanian trappers in the early twentieth century to a crumbling pre war beachside hotel, from a Thai Jungle prison to a Japanese snow festival, from the Changi gallows to a chance meeting of lovers on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Taking its title from 17th century haiku poet Basho's travel journal, The Narrow Road to the Deep North is about the impossibility of love.

At its heart is one day in a Japanese slave labour camp in August 1943.

As the day builds to its horrific climax, Dorrigo Evans battles and fails in his quest to save the lives of his fellow POWs, a man is killed for no reason, and a love story unfolds.

To the Edge of the Sky: A Story of Love, Betrayal, Suffering, and the Strength of Human Courage; by Anhua Gao.

In Now @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya.
553946.jpg

To the "Edge of the Sky" is the harrowing account of a remarkable woman's life in communist China, a tale of human courage in the face of shocking inhumanity and hardship.
Anhua Gao (her name means Tranquil Flower) was born in 1949, the year that Mao Tse Tung declared the foundation of the People's Republic of China.
"To The Edge of the Sky" is, like Jung Chang's "Wild Swans," an inspiring and heartrending story of life under communist rule and, at the same time, a compelling and detailed history of China's political upheaval through the twentieth century.
Gao's early childhood is idyllic, both of her parents are highly respected workers in the Communist army and the family lives in comfort, with many privileges.
By the time Anhua is eleven, however, both are dead and their reputation proves a fragile shield from the horrors of communist China.
With an assured and deliberate voice, and from the perspective of her new and hard won safety of a new life in Britain (her mother once pointed out the island country to her on a Chinese world map, located on the far left "on the edge of the sky"), Gao interweaves a picture of calamitous Maoist policies with her own story of shocking family betrayal, cruel imprisonment, and bureaucratic absurdity.
"To the Edge of the Sky" is a powerful and evocative autobiography the story of a woman who, against unbelievable odds, survived to find a happiness she had not dared hope for.

Vermilion Gate by Aiping Mu.

In Now @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya.
51XehYiQhnL.jpg

Aiping Mu was born to parents prominent in the Communist hierarchy, her father was Political Commissar for the Beijing region and her mother ran one of the city's universities and in her early years lived the pampered life of the Party elite: luxury housing, guards, servants and private schooling.
Both parents were considered intellectuals within the Party and from the start experienced the factional infighting and periodic purges which culminated decades later in the Cultural Revolution and the break up of the family.
Aiping herself was one of the first Red Guards before being denounced as a bourgeois intellectual and exiled to a remote province.
In the guise of following one family's rising and falling fortunes VERMILION GATE tells the story of modern China itself, written from the perspective of one who grew up close to the seat of power in history.
With rare insights into the life of the political elite and the mechanics of power and patronage in Beijing, the focus is also upon more domestic issues such as the family and the role of women in this unique and powerfully moving book.

Hitler's Naval War by Cajus Bekker.

In Now @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya.
1269785_150606100504_hitlers_naval_w.jpg

Reader review;
Those readers who have enjoyed Max Hastings' technique of combining individuals' experiences of war with wider strategic analysis (for example in "Bomber Command") will enjoy this account of the German navy's role in world war two.

This volume follows the war at sea from raider operations in the autumn of 1939 to the loss of the Scharnhorst at the end of 1943.
At first sight this might seem a rather odd and incomplete approach, but Bekker, who served as a junior officer in the German navy is not wrong.
For although the Kriegsmarine could and did still inflict losses on the allies right up to the end of the war, the loss of the Scharnhorst effectively signalled the end of truly independent naval operations.

The book is laid out in a straightforward chronological order, with the key strategic lessons from that particular phase of the war listed at the end of each chapter.
Readers who work their way through the whole book and most surely will thanks to its lucid style, will be rewarded with accounts of a variety of incidents from an unfamiliar viewpoint.

A good example of this must be the night time mining operations off the British East Coast carried out by destroyers through the autumn and winter of 1939 / 40, which initially caused heavy losses to British and neutral shipping, but ended in chaos when the German air force attacked a German flotilla setting out across the North Sea.

All things considered, this is a first rate account of the war at sea "from the other side of the hill". What a pity that it has not been in print for many years.

He’s now in charge of the new recruits guarding Ankh-Morpork, Discworld’s greatest city, from Barbarian Tribes, Miscellaneous Marauders, unlicensed Thieves, and such.
It’s a big job, particularly for an adopted dwarf.
But an even bigger job awaits, an ancient document has just revealed that Ankh-Morpork, ruled for decades by Disorganized crime, has a secret sovereign?
And his name is Carrot.

And so begins the most awesome epic encounter of all time, or at least all afternoon, in which the fate of a city, indeed of the universe itself? depends on a young man’s courage, an ancient sword’s magic, and a three legged poodle’s bladder.
Another classic fantasy from Terry Pratchett.

This book tells how people not only dream of different lives, but live them.
You too can share their joys as well as their misadventures.
Visit with them and enjoy the tales of the famous and not so famous visitors they have entertained.
How can you make a living when you had nothing to start with, this not a "how to" book but shows what can be done when you set your mind and heart to the task.
Mostly the characters have raised above the crowd in their likes, desires, and true life experiences.

Top secret data has been stolen from the CIA, and the only man who knows its hiding place is dead.
CIA operative Mitch Rapp must race to find the classified information in this blistering novel that picks up where The Last Man left off in Vince Flynn’s New York Times bestselling series.

Joseph “Rick” Rickman, former boy wonder at the CIA, stole a massive amount of top secret and hugely compromising intel concerning classified operations all over the world, offering it (and himself) to the Pakistani secret forces.
Only his plans went awry when CIA director Irene Kennedy sent Mitch Rapp to hunt him down.
It turns out that killing Rickman didn’t solve anything, in fact, the nightmare is only intensifying.
Rickman stored the potentially devastating data (CIA assets, operatives, agents) somewhere only he knew, and somehow, from beyond the grave, he still poses a mortal threat to America.

Now it’s a deadly race as both the Pakistanis and the Americans search for Rickman’s accomplices and the information they are slowly leaking to the world.
Will Rapp outrun and outthink his enemies, or will the Pakistanis find it first and hold America hostage to their dream of becoming the world’s new nuclear superpower?

Conflict is an inevitable part of life, according to this ancient Chinese classic of strategy, but everything necessary to deal with conflict wisely, honorably, victoriously, is already present within us. Compiled more than two thousand years ago by a mysterious warrior-philosopher, The Art of War is still perhaps the most prestigious and influential book of strategy in the world, as eagerly studied in Asia by modern politicians and executives as it has been by military leaders since ancient times.
As a study of the anatomy of organizations in conflict, The Art of War applies to competition and conflict in general, on every level from the interpersonal to the international.
Its aim is invincibility, victory without battle, and unassailable strength through understanding the physics, politics, and psychology of conflict.

Original publication date was circa 500 BCE.

Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057.
He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions.
He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow.

Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, for fifteen-year-old Christopher everyday interactions and admonishments have little meaning.
He lives on patterns, rules, and a diagram kept in his pocket.
Then one day, a neighbor's dog, Wellington, is killed and his carefully constructive universe is threatened.
Christopher sets out to solve the murder in the style of his favourite (logical) detective, Sherlock Holmes.
What follows makes for a novel that is funny, poignant and fascinating in its portrayal of a person whose curse and blessing are a mind that perceives the world entirely literally.
