The Third Bullet by Stephen Hunter.

In Now @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop Pattaya.

13547517.jpg
Bob Lee Swagger is back in a thriller fifty years in the making, It’s not even a clue.
It’s a whisper, a trace, a ghost echo, drifting down through the decades via chance connections so fragile that they would disintegrate in the puff of a breath.
But it’s enough to get legendary former Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger interested in the events of November 22, 1963, and the third bullet that so decisively ended the life of John F. Kennedy and set the stage for one of the most enduring controversies of our time.

Swagger begins his slow night stalk through a much traveled landscape.
But he’s asking questions that few have asked before: Why did the third bullet explode?
Why did Lee Harvey Oswald, about to become the most hunted man on earth, risk it all by returning to his rooming house to secure a pistol he easily could have brought with him?
How could a conspiracy that went unpenetrated for fifty years have been thrown together in the two and a half days between the announcement of the president’s route and the assassination itself?

As Bob investigates, another voice enters the narrative: knowing, ironic, almost familiar, that of a gifted, Yale educated veteran of the CIA Plans Division. Hugh Meachum has Secrets and the means and the will to keep them buried.
When weighed against his own legacy, Swagger’s life is an insignificant expense, but to blunt the threat, he’ll first have to ambush the sniper.

As each man hunts the other across today’s globe and through the thickets of history,
The Third Bullet builds to an explosive climax that will finally prove what Bob Lee Swagger has always known: it’s never too late for justice.

Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction 1965 by J. D. Salinger

41Ho4yQjGmL._SX319_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Reader review.
One of my all time favorite authors who never disappoints me.
This is not my first time reading "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters" but it is the first time that I noticed the quotation in the front of the book which explains the title.
I did not experience J. D. Salinger's work until I returned to college as an adult but as soon as I read one of his short stories I was hooked.
I am not a particular fan of the short story but I own most of Salinger's and read them over again every few years.
His stories of the Glass family continue to intrigue me and reading the recent biography of Salinger added to my fondness for these stories. I just sent my copy of "Franny and Zooey" to my grandson. He is fourteen, reads at the college level and it is hard for me to find books that I like and think will interest him.
I highly recommend this book for readers from teenagers to retirees like me.

The Author.
Born in New York in 1919, Jerome David Salinger dropped out of several schools before enrolling in a writing class at Columbia University, publishing his first piece ("The Young Folks") in Story magazine.
Soon after, the New Yorker picked up the heralded "A Perfect Day for Bananafish," and more pieces followed, including "Slight Rebellion off Madison" in 1941, an early Holden Caulfield story. Following a stint in Europe for World War II, Salinger returned to New York and began work on his signature novel, 1951's "The Catcher in the Rye," an immediate bestseller for its iconoclastic hero and forthright use of profanity.
Following this success, Salinger retreated to his Cornish, New Hampshire, home where he grew increasingly private, eventually erecting a wall around his property and publishing just three more books: "Nine Stories," "Franny and Zooey," "Raise High the Roof Beam, and Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction." Salinger was married twice and had two children.
He died of natural causes on January 27, 2010, in New Hampshire at the age of 91.

Franny and Zooey 1973 by J. D.Salinger

In Now @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop Pattaya.

Reader review....

Still the best. When Salinger wrote "The Catcher in the Rye", as well as the short story "A Perfect Day for Bananafish", he had recognized, almost to perfection, the great trauma of the human condition, as well as honed his ability to articulate it through his damaged heroes who literally "see more" (as in Seymour) than everyone else, and who lead us to an unsettling but truer vision of mortality stripped of its "phoniness".

But we had to wait for "Franny and Zooey" before Salinger had worked out, in his own mind, the optimistic and oh so satisfying remedy, inoculation, or vaccine for that perpetual human condition in the resolution of "Franny and Zooey". Reading any of Salinger's works without also reading "Franny and Zooey" is like reading the Bible without looking at the Gospels.

Eye for an Eye by Ben Coes.

In Ben Coes' latest, Eye for an Eye, Dewey Andreas faces the toughest odds of his life as one of China's most powerful men has decided to do whatever he must to take down Dewey and inflicts a horrifying loss.

When Dewey Andreas uncovers the identity of a mole embedded at a high level in Israel's Mossad, it triggers a larger, more dangerous plot.
The mole was the most important asset of Chinese Intelligence, and Fao Bhang, head of China's Ministry of State Security (MSS), responds to the discovery and brutal elimination of the mole, by immediately placing a kill order on the man responsible, Dewey Andreas.

Dewey is tracked to Argentina, where he is on vacation with his fiancée, Jessica Tanzer, a U.S. National Security Advisor.
A top level kill team is sent in quickly and quietly, but their attack fails to take out Dewey.
The collateral damage, however, is both horrifying and deeply personal.
With nothing left to lose, Andreas is determined to have his revenge. Once he learns who is probably behind the attack and why they are after him, Dewey goes rogue, using all of his assets and skills to launch a counterattack.
Andreas must now face the full weight and might of the MSS, Chinese Intelligence, and the formidable Fao Bhang, if he's to achieve his one last goal: revenge on a biblical scale, no matter the odds or the armies that he will have to fight his way through. Andreas, former Army Ranger and Delta, is a man of great skills and cunning.
His opponent, Fao Bhang, is ruthless, determined, and with no limit to the assets at his disposal.

In this conflict, there are only two possible outcomes. And only one Dewey Andreas.

No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy.

In Now @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe, Pattaya.

51dV0D7ylLL.jpg

In his blistering new novel, Cormac McCarthy returns to the Texas-Mexico border, setting of his famed Border Trilogy.
The time is our own, when rustlers have given way to drug runners and small towns have become free fire zones.

One day, a good old boy named Llewellyn Moss finds a pickup truck surrounded by a bodyguard of dead men.
A load of heroin and two million dollars in cash are still in the back. When Moss takes the money, he sets off a chain reaction of catastrophic violence that not even the law in the person of aging, disillusioned Sheriff Bell can contain.

As Moss tries to evade his pursuers in particular a mysterious mastermind who flips coins for human lives McCarthy simultaneously strips down the American crime novel and broadens its concerns to encompass themes as ancient as the Bible and as bloodily contemporary as this morning’s headlines.
No Country for Old Men is a triumph.

In 1864, Union general William Tecumseh Sherman marched his sixty thousand troops through Georgia to the sea, and then up into the Carolinas.
The army fought off Confederate forces, demolished cities, and accumulated a borne along population of freed blacks and white refugees until all that remained was the dangerous transient life of the dispossessed and the triumphant.
In E. L. Doctorow’s hands the great march becomes a floating world, a nomadic consciousness, and an unforgettable reading experience with awesome relevance to our own times.

41CTF5SWVRL._SX312_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Garry Nelson’s diary of the highs and lows of a struggling third division football league club is an authentic and refreshingly vivid expose of English professional football, with an insight into the problems and day to day anxieties of players, backroom staff and management alike.

From the temperamental mini-star through to the no hoper reject, from early season cheer to end of season gloom, from a glorious triumph to a struggle to put eleven players on the field, this portrayal of the life and times of Torquay United FC captures the essence of what football is all about.

The book also takes in the wider issues, such as the funding of soccer, FIFA and the British transfer system.
Through it all, the former Torquay United player coach never fails to illuminate his words with sharp comparisons and ironic contrasts that are part and parcel of the game in this country.

Following on from his first book, the bestselling Left Foot Forward, Garry Nelson has established himself as an excellent writer and a shrewd and thoughtful analysis of football.

When his endlessly capricious wife Eva receives plane tickets for the family to visit Auntie Joan and Uncle Wally in Atlanta, Wilt knows only one thing, that nothing could entice him to fly three thousand miles over the water, and especially not two rotund Americans with more money than sense.

What better way to escape and find equilibrium then to embark on a walking tour?

Just Wilt, the countryside, and an ill judged bottle of whiskey...

Meanwhile, Eva finds her plans to inherit Joan and Wally's fortune slipping away faster than her sanity, thanks to a combination of sinister teenage quadruplets with foul mouths, and her unexpected role as lead suspect in a drug trafficking plot.

Outrageous, darkly comic, and packed with calamity on top of calamity, Tom Sharpe's latest episode of Wilt's misadventures is a razor sharp farce that will delight fans both old and new.

Gangster Warlords: Drug Dollars, Killing Fields, and the New Politics of Latin America by Ioan Grillo.

Gangster-warlords.jpg

In a ranch south of Texas, the man known as The Executioner dumps five hundred body parts in metal barrels.
In Brazil's biggest city, a mysterious prisoner orders hit men to gun down forty one police officers and prison guards in two days.
In southern Mexico, a meth maker is venerated as a saint while enforcing Old Testament justice on his enemies.

A new kind of criminal kingpin has arisen: part CEO, part terrorist, and part rock star, unleashing guerrilla attacks, strong arming governments, and taking over much of the world's trade in narcotics, guns, and humans.
What they do affects you now, from the gas in your car, to the gold in your jewelry, to the tens of thousands of Latin Americans calling for refugee status in the U.S.
Gangster Warlords is the first definitive account of the crime wars now wracking Central and South America and the Caribbean, regions largely abandoned by the U.S. after the Cold War.
Author of the critically acclaimed El Narco, Ioan Grillo has covered Latin America since 2001 and gained access to every level of the cartel chain of command in what he calls the new battlefields of the Americas.
Moving between militia controlled ghettos and the halls of top policy makers, Grillo provides a disturbing new understanding of a war that has spiraled out of control, one that people across the political spectrum need to confront now.

I found it to be one of the most thoughtful examinations of the possibility of an afterlife I've come across, and easy for a lay person to understand.
A highly intelligent, very thoughtful look at a complex subject, and to his great credit, the author does not push his own personal religious viewpoint.
If you are interested in this subject I highly recommend you obtain a copy.

The-City-MM-Cover.jpg

Dean Koontz is at the peak of his storytelling powers with this major new novel, a rich, multi-layered story that moves back and forth across decades and generations as a gifted musician relates the ‘terrible and wonderful’ events that began in his city in 1967, when he was ten.

THIS IS THE STORY OF A BOY AND A CITY…

Jonah Kirk’s childhood has been punctuated by extraordinary moments, like the time a generous stranger helped him realize his dream of learning the piano.

Nothing is more important to him than his family and friends, and the electrifying power of music.

But now Jonah has a terrifying secret.

And it sets him on a collision course with a group of dangerous people who will change his life forever.

For one bright morning, a single earth shattering event will show Jonah that in his city, good is entwined with malice, and sometimes the dark side of humanity triumphs.

But it will also teach him that courage and honour are found in the most unexpected places, and the way forward lies buried deep inside the heart.

If he can just survive to find it…
