The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

51GJCBgMhhL.jpg

The searing, postapocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy's masterpiece.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America.
Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark.
Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there.
They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food and each other.

The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world entire," are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI, and a Devil's Deal

by Dick Lehr & Gerard O'Neill .

511vMRyVMtL.jpg

James “Whitey” Bulger became one of the most ruthless gangsters in US history, and all because of an unholy deal he made with a childhood friend.

John Connolly a rising star in the Boston FBI office, offered Bulger protection in return for helping the Feds eliminate Boston's Italian mafia.

But no one offered Boston protection from Whitey Bulger, who, in a blizzard of gangland killings, took over the city's drug trade.

Whitey's deal with Connolly's FBI spiraled out of control to become the biggest informant scandal in FBI history.

Black Mass is a New York Times and Boston Globe bestseller, written by two former reporters who were on the case from the beginning.

It is an epic story of violence, double cross, and corruption at the center of which are the black hearts of two old friends whose lives unfolded in the darkness of permanent midnight.

Immortal by Dean Crawford.

WOULD YOU KILL TO LIVE FOREVER ?

When the body of a gunshot victim rolls into the Santa Fe morgue, it should be a day like any other for medical investigator Lillian Cruz. Yet upon examination, the corpse appears to be over a hundred years old with smallpox scars and an odd wound protrudes from the victim’s leg.
Lodged in the femur, under decrepit scar tissue, is a bullet shaped like a musket ball.
The bullet looks like it was fired during the Civil War and had remained in the victim’s leg ever since.

Rattled by the discovery, Cruz instructs her assistant to take specimens to the state authorities immediately and not to tell a soul about it.
Minutes after the assistant leaves, the lights go dark in the morgue and Cruz is kidnapped.

The Defense Intelligence Agency calls in former war correspondent Ethan Warner and his partner, Nicola Lopez, to discreetly investigate the disappearance.
And very quickly, a relatively simple case turns into something much more sinister.
With each new lead they uncover, Warner and Lopez are inadvertently bringing a warped and dangerous individual closer to achieving a catastrophic goal: immortality.
In the spine chilling tradition of Michael Crichton and James Rollins, Immortal is an action-packed blockbuster that combines science, suspense, and ingenious speculation.

What happened to the Allied armies in Normandy in the months after D-Day?
Why, after the initial success of the landings, did their advance stall a few miles inland?
How did the Germans, deprived of air support, hold off such massive forces for months?
A fresh and incisive examination of this most crucial campaign with accounts from veterans on both sides, sheds new light on its demands and difficulties, as well as the plans and performance of all the commanders involved.

Here is a picture of organised crime, seen within the ranks of the Hell's Angels, the Yardies, the Triads and the Yakuza, as well as the old-style East-End gangs.
It is an insight into their initiation ceremonies, their methods, their money raising tactics; a timely portrayal of Britain's worst criminal problem.

Six years ago, after working for the British Secret Intelligence Service, Alec Milius got out of the spy game after being drummed out by MI6.
His retirement came at unbearably great personal cost.
But just because he's walked away from the life, it doesn't mean that that life has walked away from him.

Now living in exile in Madrid, quietly and as far under the radar as possible, Milius keeps a constant eye out for the enemies he made, hoping to avoid any future involvement.
Yet when a prominent Basque politician goes missing under suspicious circumstances, Milius soon finds himself embroiled in another international conspiracy.

Introduced in A Spy by Nature, Alec Milius returns in The Spanish Game, a compelling, modern espionage novel from Charles Cumming, widely acclaimed as a modern master of the form

The Phantom of the Open: The Story of Maurice Flitcroft, the World's Worst Golfer.

The hilarious, heartwarming and unbelievably true story of Maurice Flitcroft, the World's Worst Golfer.

"I have been insulted, abused, pelted with stones, held up to ridicule, manhandled by police, prosecuted, fined, threatened with violence and finally physically assaulted.
In spite of it all I shall try to succeed as a professional golfer, because that is what I have chosen to do, and no amount of sabre rattling is going to stop me"

When 46 year-old crane driver and former comedy stunt diver Maurice Flitcroft chanced his way into the Open having never before played a round of golf in his life he ran up a record worst score of 121.
The sport's ruling classes went nuclear, and banned him sine die.

Maurice didn't take it lying down.
In a hilarious game of cat and mouse with The Man, he entered tournaments again and again, and again using increasingly ludicrous pseudonyms such as Gene Pacecki, Arnold Palmtree and Count Manfred von Hofmannsthal (more often than not disguised by a Zapata moustache soaked in food dye).

In doing so, he sent the authorities into apoplexy, and won the hearts of hackers from Muirfield to Michigan, becoming arguably the most popular but certainly the bravest sporting underdog the world has ever known.

Cambodia's Curse: The Modern History of a Troubled Land
by Joel Brinkley.

51KGXi1fboL.jpg

A generation after the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia shows every sign of having overcome its history, the streets of Phnom Penh are paved; skyscrapers dot the skyline.
But under this façade lies a country still haunted by its years of terror.
Joel Brinkley won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting in Cambodia on the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime that killed one quarter of the nation's population during its years in power.
In 1992, the world came together to help pull the small nation out of the mire.
Cambodia became a United Nations protectorate, the first and only time the UN tried something so ambitious, what did the new, democratically elected government do with this unprecedented gift?

In 2008 and 2009, Brinkley returned to Cambodia to find out, he discovered a population in the grip of a venal government.
He learned that one third to one half of Cambodians who lived through the Khmer Rouge era have P.T.S.D. and its afflictions are being passed to the next generation.
His extensive close up reporting in Cambodia's Curse illuminates the country, its people, and the deep historical roots of its modern day behavior.

Wrestling the Dragon: In Search of the Tibetan Lama Who Defied China by Gaby Naher.

In now @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe, Pattaya..
410WdUV9ASL.jpg

He's master of the PlayStation, he listens to rap music, he writes poetry and, in his eighteen year-old hands, may hold the future of the Tibetan people.
He is Ogyen Trinley Dorje, a Tibetan lama and the seventeenth incarnation of the Karmapa (third in line to the Dalai Lama).
When he was fourteen, Ugyen fled Tibet and began his journey into exile and the Chinese lost the boy they hoped would one day replace the Dalai Lama in the hearts of six million Tibetans.
Today, he lives under house arrest, ostensibly being 'protected' by the Indian Government which is more likely protecting its relationship with China.
So begins the true story of the 17th Karmapa of Tibet, a story which has all the elements of a cracking tale: magical portents at his birth, a village childhood on the Roof of the World, attempted indoctrination by the Chinese his short life provides a fascinating insight into the Contemporary Tibetan struggle, while his future as a religious leader of global significance is already being forecast.
To write this story, Gaby Naher intends to travel throughout the region and interview key players of the Tibetan Government in Exile, as well as religious figures in the area.

Killing Rage by Eamon Collins.

In now @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe, Pattaya..
51MnMBlH4QL._SX292_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

This is an account of how an angry young man can cross the line that divides theoretical support for violence from a state of 'killing rage', in which the murder of neighbour becomes thinkable.
Over 3000 people have died in Northern Ireland since 1969, and most of them have died at the hands of their neighbours.
The intimacy of the Ulster conflict, what it means to carry out a political murder when in all probability the victim is personally known, or lives in a nearby street, is described accurately by an honest participant.
The book does not attempt to soften the impact of the events it describes through euphemism or rhetoric.
It is a truthful picture of the brutality and waste caused by the IRA's unwinnable campaign, and of its human consequences.
It is also a self portrait of the despair and disintegration, the hardening to conscience and grief, that accompany political violence.

The Dead Eight, by Carlo Gébler.

13107895.jpg

Gébler is an overlooked novelist, The Dead Eight is one of the truest, least flashy, most human novels I have read for a long time.'

'It’s a powerful tale and one well told… The story might span the first half of the 20th century, but it’s a tale that’s as timely and relevant as tomorrow’s headlines.'

'Gebler has already proved himself a master at transmuting historical facts into compelling fiction and in this new novel he's just as adroit at creating psychological and dramatic suspense out of known facts, a book so rich in characterisation, so expertly paced and so well written that it works equally well as absorbing social history and page-turning thriller.'

'The picture that Gébler paints of the entire Irish establishment from police to courts to priest to public opinion is as damning as anything his mother (Edna O'Brien) has ever produced about her homeland.'

Hard Work: Life in Low-pay Britain by Polly Toynbee.

In Now @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe, Pattaya...

51gXsLqUioL.jpg

A passionately reasoned and compelling account of the avoidable cruelties still embedded in the underside of British life, by a writer who has literally worn the clothes, lived in the flats and done the jobs of the poor.
Every member of the cabinet should be required to read it, apologise and then act'.
Will Hutton.
A frank and breathtaking book, this is journalist and broadcaster Polly Toynbee's account of her courageous intention to live and work on the minimum wage.
The 'decent living' wage set by the Council of Europe is set at GBP7.39. (2003) The minimum wage in Britain is currently GBP4.10 per hour.
And often, people are working for less, their voices unheard, their faces unnoticed.
The low paid are caught in an economic double bind that victimises them and shames the rest of us.
Toynbee took whatever jobs she could find, often offered for less than the official minimum wage.
Living on an estate in Clapham, she started from scratch and found that if she were truly unemployed, She would not even be able to afford a new job and that faced with starvation, it's impossible not to sink into debt.
In this powerful and compelling book, Polly Toynbee journeys to the inside of Britain today and uncovers that world which is invisible to most. This is a damning portrait of social justice in Britain.
