De Valera, Volume 1: Rise, 1882-1932 by David McCullagh...

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange.

From the host of RTÉ’s Primetime and author of The Reluctant Taoiseach, the widely acclaimed biography of John A. Costello, Rise 1882-1932 is the first volume of a major two-part reassessment of the man who shaped modern Ireland. Eamon de Valera is the most single most consequential Irish figure of the twentieth century. He was a leader of the Easter Rising, the figurehead of the anti-treaty rebels during the dark days of the Civil War and later, as the founder of Fianna Fáil and President of Ireland, the pivotal figure in the birth of the Republic. While de Valera the statesman, the rebel, the visionary, has passed over into a sort of myth, de Valera the man remains an elusive, almost opaque presence. Precious little is known of his background, his motivations - the roots, in short, of his ferocious devotion to a very particular brand of Irish nationalism.

Here, in the first part of a major two-volume reassessment, historian and broadcaster David McCullagh considers the man behind the colossal achievements. McCullagh sketches a ground-breaking portrait of de Valera, his times and his complex, ever-shifting legacy. The concluding volume of this work, Rule 1932-1975, will be published in autumn 2018.

Fatal Friends, Deadly Neighbors and Other True Cases by Ann Rule. . . .

We have a good selection from Ann in the True Crime section @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange.

Author and Queen of true crime Ann Rule’s sixteenth volume in her True Crime Files series, Deadly Neighbors delves into the unsolved case of a billionaire’s son mysteriously falling off a balcony to his death and more. In July 2011, billionaire Jonah Shacknai’s Coronado, California, mansion was the setting for two horrifying deaths only days apart - his young son’s plunge from a balcony and his girlfriend’s ghastly hanging.

What really happened? Baffling questions remain unanswered, as these cases were closed far too soon for hundreds of people; Rule looks at them now through the eyes of a relentless crime reporter.

The second probe began in Utah when Susan Powell vanished in a 2009 blizzard. Her controlling husband, Josh, proved capable of a blind rage that was heartbreakingly fatal to his innocent small sons almost three years later in a tragedy that shocked America as the details unfolded.

If anyone had detected the depth of depravity within Josh Powell, perhaps the family that loved and trusted him would have been saved. In these and seven other riveting cases, Ann Rule exposes the twisted truth behind the façades of Fatal Friends, Deadly Neighbors. These doomed relationships are the focus of Queen of true crime Ann Rule’s sixteenth all-new Crime Files collection. In these shattering inside views of both headlined and little-known homicides, Rule speaks for vulnerable victims who relied on the wrong people. She begins with two startling novella-length investigations.

Rumrunners: The Smugglers from St. Pierre and Miquelon and the Burin Peninsula from Prohibition to Present Day by J.P. Andrieux

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange.

Rumrunners is a history of the smuggling trade between the French Island colonies of St. Pierre and Miquelon and the United States, the Bahamas, and Newfoundland.

The distribution of contraband alcohol has always been an element of the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. However, with the advent of the American Prohibition era (1919–1933), the French Islands’ illegal practice took on worldwide proportions.

This book details the rise and fall of the bootlegging industry in Atlantic waters, the efforts made by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to curb these criminal activities, and the evolution of laws from the Prohibition era to present day that have brought the trade to a virtual standstill.

What Doesn't Kill You...: My Life in Motor Racing by Johnny Herbert. . . . .

This book UK is 8.99 GBP - our price 120 baht plus 50% trade in for credit when you return it - trade in your unwanted books with us @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe.

Johnny Herbert was one of the most brilliant natural talents to emerge in motor racing, but for all his bravery and prowess, he's lucky to be alive.

After becoming British Junior Karting Champion (losing part of a finger in the process), then the Formula 3 title for Eddie Jordan in 1987, he was all set for a glittering debut season in Formula 1 when he was caught in a mass pile-up at Brands Hatch.

That horrific crash threatened to end his career, but Herbert made a miraculous recovery, was a hugely popular winner of the British Grand Prix in 1995, and enjoyed 25 years of competitive motorsport, becoming the only British driver to win the 24 hours of Le Mans followed by a Grand Prix. And all that despite driving every pace in extreme pain; in fact, as the first and only disabled driver in F1 history. While chronicling an extraordinary life behind the wheel with cheer and his trademark cheeky humour, What Doesn't Kill You... contains a wealth of stories from the hard end of Formula 1: on Johnny's team-mate Michael Schumacher, legends like Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, his fellow British adversaries Damon Hill, Martin Brundle and Nigel Mansell, and of course all those gruesome accidents.

With an encyclopedic knowledge and love of the sport, Johnny Herbert's memoir, much like the man himself, delivers brilliance from the back of the grid.

What's your name, I'm fine thank you: Mugged by reality in Bangkok and beyond by Roger Beaumont....

Hard to find books @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe.

Review by Jason Schoonover

I’m part of the Bangkok writing scene, having written in the 1980s the Bantam international bestseller Thai Gold, which, to my surprise, spawned a huge and whole genre of adventure-thrillers based in the bars, backstreets and brothels of Bangkok (and the region) with its colorful characters, from ex-spooks and Air America pilots to adventurers of all kinds.

I say this because I want to be up front about knowing Roger, and how much I admire his writing.

There’s few columnists (and I was once one myself) I have ever read anywhere, anytime period as consistently brilliant, original and thought provoking as Roger.

There’s few writers I know of his genius - yes, genius - who have only published one, single work and this is it.

He should have an international readership. I’m not the only established writer who has urged him innumerable time to sit down and write a bloody book.

I’m still doing so….
