Billy....... by Pamela Stephenson.

Once in a lifetime, there strides upon the stage someone who can truly be called a legend.
Such a person is the inimitable, timeless genius who is Billy Connolly.
His effortlessly wicked whimsy has entranced, enthralled and split the sides of, thousands upon thousands of adoring audiences.

And when he isn't doing that, he's turning in award winning performances on film and television.

He's the man who needs no introduction and yet he is the ultimate enigma.
From a troubled and desperately poor childhood in the docklands of Glasgow he is now the intimacy of household names the world over.

How did this happen, who is the real Billy Connolly? Only one person can answer that question: his wife, Pamela Stephenson. Pamela’s writing combines the very personal with a frank objectivity that makes for a compelling, moving and hugely entertaining biography.
This is the real Billy Connolly.

This genre-defining book is now re-released for a new generation of comedy fans, with a stunning package and a new Foreword from the author.
Pamela’s vision of Billy is as true now as it ever was as groundbreaking, as moving and as laugh-out-loud funny and here she brings the book fully into its context, as one of the most influential biographies ever written.

Benjawan finally reveals the story of her experience as a professional Thai and Lao interpreter, graphically showing how she works in legal settings including courtrooms and jails.
She demystifies the conflicts that many Thai - Western couples face after moving to the US.
Find out what happens when individuals who don't speak the language end up in criminal, civil and family courts.
But this story is also a personal one, relating the author's journey from humble beginnings in rural Thailand to become a professional interpreter in the San Francisco Bay area.
More and more in this interconnected world, the need to communicate across language barriers is becoming essential. Miscommunication can lead to serious conflict between groups or countries, taking the wrong medicine can cause serious medical complications, the wrong word spoken by a traveler can lead to a foreign jail.
Entertaining, engaging, written in a down to earth style, this book is filled with anecdotes and true stories.

The sequel to the cult classic The Dice Man, this book can also change your life?

Larry Rhinehart is the son of an infamous father, the renegade psychiatrist Luke Rhinehart, otherwise known as the Dice Man.

Luke became a cult figure in the seventies, inspiring thousands to follow him into the anarchic world of Dice Living, where every decision is made not by the self, but by the roll of the dice.

Larry, however, is emphatically not a follower.
He has grown up to have a great respect for order and control.
A wealthy Wall Street analyst, all set to marry the boss’s daughter, Larry has got life where he wants it.
Until rumours begin to circulate about the reappearance of his long vanished father and Larry’s carefully organized world begins to look a lot less certain.

By turns funny, moving and wildly erotic.
The Search for the Dice Man is a journey of the body and spirit never to be forgotten.

Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Cocaine Explosion
by Gary Webb.

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe, Pattaya...
51jeRWRcgRL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

In August 1996, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb stunned the world with a series of articles in the San Jose Mercury News reporting the results of his year long investigation into the roots of the crack cocaine epidemic in America, specifically in Los Angeles.
The series, titled “Dark Alliance,” revealed that for the better part of a decade, a Bay Area drug ring sold tons of cocaine to Los Angeles street gangs and funneled millions in drug profits to the CIA backed Nicaraguan Contras.

Gary Webb pushed his investigation even further in his book, Dark Alliance: The CIA, The Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion. Drawing from then newly declassified documents, undercover DEA audio and videotapes that had never been publicly released, federal court testimony and interviews, Webb demonstrates how our government knowingly allowed massive amounts of drugs and money to change hands at the expense of our communities.

Webb’s own stranger than fiction experience is also woven into the book.
His excoriation by the media, not because of any wrongdoing on his part, but by an insidious process of innuendo and suggestion that in effect blamed Webb for the implications of the story, had been all but predicted.
Webb was warned off doing a CIA expose by a former Associated Press journalist who lost his job when, years before, he had stumbled onto the germ of the “Dark Alliance” story.
And though Internal investigations by both the CIA and the Justice Department eventually vindicated Webb, he had by then been pushed out of the Mercury News and gone to work for the California State Legislature Task Force on Government Oversight.
He died in 2004.

The harrowing, true account from the brave men on the ground who fought back during the Battle of Benghazi.

13 HOURS presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya.

I Am Duran: My Autobiography, Sept 2016 by Roberto Duran.

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe, Pattaya.....
819cBaey-UL.jpg

They called him “Manos de Piedra” Hands of Stone and he was one of the greatest boxers of all time.
Now Roberto Durán tells his unbelievable story: from the streets of Panama to being crowned one of the “Four Kings,” along with Hearns, Leonard, and Hagler, as he blazed a trail through the Golden Age of Boxing.

Born into abject poverty, barely able to read or write, Durán quickly realized that his fists could both protect him on the streets and put food on the table.
His reputation was established on the day when, for a bet, he knocked down a horse with a single punch.
At the age of twenty one, he claimed his first world title, against Ken Buchanan at Madison Square Garden.
The legend of Manos de Piedra was born, but his most glorious moment was yet to come.

In 1980, Durán delivered one of the greatest upsets in boxing history by defeating the previously unbeatable Sugar Ray Leonard. But greater fame brought greater distractions and Durán’s endless partying took its toll before the two superstars faced each other again.
Here, for the first time ever, Durán confronts the debacle of the rematch that entered sporting folklore, and the truth behind the moment he was heard to utter the infamous words “No más” No more.

Durán’s explosive performances in the ring were matched only by the volatility of his life outside it.
He lurched from living like royalty to bankruptcy and, after being written off as a boxing also ran, made a bloody, legendary comeback that gave his career the ultimate ending, and finally brought redemption.
He came from nothing, and changed the world.
I Am Durán is the autobiography of one of boxing’s most iconic legends.

Psycho Pat: Legend or Madman? by Pat Van Den Hauwe.

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe, Pattaya...
13229677.jpg

"Psycho" is a word rarely bandied about in football today.
There is no place on the pitch for player contact, let alone the sort of hard, robust tackling that could earn a player such a nickname.
But 25 years ago, things were different.
Only when players really overstepped the mark were their names added to the referee's little black book and Pat Van Den Hauwe had a reputation as one of the hardest players in the game.
In a career encompassing some 401 Football League appearances for Birmingham City, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Millwall, he notched up two league titles and a European Cup Winner's Cup medal but he also made his mark as one of the toughest and most feared defenders in the game.
But Pat wasn't just a tough player on the pitch, the way he lived his life meant that he needed to be tough off the pitch as well.
A "hard nut" reputation invites people into your life who want to see how far they can push you, and Pat Van Den Hauwe attracted such people by the busload.

In 1918 Ernest Hemingway went to war, to the war to end all wars. He volunteered for ambulance service in Italy, was wounded, and twice decorated. Out of his experiences came A Farewell to Arms. Hemingway's description of war is unforgettable. He recreates the fear, the comradeship, the courage of his young American volunteer, and the men and women he meets in Italy with total conviction. But A Farewell to Arms is not only a novel of war. In it, Hemingway has also created a love story of immense drama and uncompromising passion.

The IHA has nothing major going on at the moment and Nina has been offered a large advance to write a book, it might be the perfect time for a sabbatical.
But those dreams are quickly dashed when the new U.N. liaison calls an emergency meeting to announce that a Viking runestone has been stolen from a Swedish museum and that the heist was led by none other than a mole operating within the IHA itself.
Nina and Eddie are immediately on the scene, where they learn from the museum's Norse expert, Tova Skilfinger, that the runestone reveals the secret of how to reach Valhalla a great hall that, according to myth, houses a god-killing Poison known as eitr.

When an unidentified female body is discovered laid out on a slab in an abandoned butcher's shop, the cause of death is unclear.
Her body bears no marks; except for the fact that her lips have been carefully stitched shut.

It is only when the full autopsy gets underway at the Los Angeles County morgue that the pathologist will reveal the true horror of the situation, a discovery so devastating that Detective Robert Hunter of the Los Angeles Homicide Special Section has to be pulled off a different case to take over the investigation

But when his inquiry collides with a missing persons' case being investigated by the razor-sharp Whitney Meyers, Hunter suspects the killer might be keeping several women hostage.
Soon Robert finds himself on the hunt for a murderer with a warped obsession, a stalker for whom love has become hate.
