L'Assommoir (Les Rougon-Macquart #7) by Émile Zola..

Traded in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Guesthouse - Cafe. .

The seventh novel in the Rougon-Macquart cycle, L'Assommoir(1877) is the story of a woman's struggle for happiness in working-class Paris.

At the center of the story stands Gervaise, who starts her own laundry and for a time makes a success of it.

But her husband soon squanders her earnings in the Assommoir, a local drinking spot, and gradually the pair sink into poverty and squalor.

L'Assommoir was a contemporary bestseller, outraged conservative critics, and launched a passionate debate about the legitimate scope of modern literature.

This new translation captures not only the brutality but the pathos of its characters' lives.

Travellers in the Third Reich: The Rise of Fascism Through the Eyes of Everyday People..by Julia Boyd..

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Guesthouse - Cafe. .

Without the benefit of hindsight, how do you interpret what’s right in front of your eyes? The events that took place in Germany between 1919 and 1945 were dramatic and terrible but there were also moments of confusion, of doubt - of hope.

How easy was it to know what was actually going on, to grasp the essence of National Socialism, to remain untouched by the propaganda or predict the Holocaust? Travellers in the Third Reich is an extraordinary history of the rise of the Nazis based on fascinating first-hand accounts, drawing together a multitude of voices and stories, including students, politicians, musicians, diplomats, schoolchildren, communists, scholars, athletes, poets, journalists, fascists, artists, tourists, even celebrities like Charles Lindbergh and Samuel Beckett.

Their experiences create a remarkable three-dimensional picture of Germany under Hitler, one so palpable that the reader will feel, hear, even breathe the atmosphere. These are the accidental eyewitnesses to history. Disturbing, absurd, moving, and ranging from the deeply trivial to the deeply tragic, their tales give a fresh insight into the complexities of the Third Reich, its paradoxes and its ultimate destruction.

Secret Slave by Anna Ruston. . . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange -

Growing up in a deeply troubled family, 15-year-old Anna felt lost and alone in the world.

So when a friendly taxi driver called Malik befriended her at the taxi-rank she helped out at, Anna welcomed the attention and before long found herself agreeing to go home with him to meet his family.

But what Anna didn't realize as she stepped into the hallway of Malik's home was that she would not leave the house for the next 13 years . . .

Held captive by sadistic pedophile Malik and his family, Anna was locked in a bedroom and subjected to over a decade of despicable levels of sexual abuse and torture. Completely shut off from the outside world, she was broken both physically and mentally by unrelenting violence and degradation, her darkest moments coming as her abuse resulted in the birth of four babies . . . each of which were taken from her, never to be seen again.

But then one day a kindly health visitor showed up, and despite her shattered mind and body, Anna spotted a chance of escape . . .

A harrowing but ultimately inspiring read, Secret Slave reveals the shocking truth of what can happen behind the closed door of a very normal house on an average British street.

Blind Faith by Ben Elton. . .

Ben Elton books @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange -

Imagine a world where everyone knows everything about everybody.

Where 'sharing' is valued above all, and privacy is considered a dangerous perversion. Trafford wouldn't call himself a rebel, but he's daring to be different, to stand out from the crowd.

In his own small ways, he wants to push against the system.

But in this world, uniformity is everything and even tiny defiances won't go unnoticed. Ben Elton's dark, savagely comic novel imagines a post-apocalyptic society where religious intolerance combines with a sex-obsessed, utterly egocentric culture.

In this world, nakedness is modesty, independent thought subversive, and ignorance is wisdom. A chilling vision of what's to come?

Or something rather closer to home?

A scenario long dreaded by the military and intelligence planners in Canberra is being played out...

An Act Of War is fiction - at the moment.

But in the tradition of Tom Clancy, Michael O'Connor has spun a tense and gripping story which is more in the nature of prediction than imagination.

The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick.

In the Science fiction section @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange -

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again.

The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names.

In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages.

All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan. This harrowing, Hugo Award-winning novel is the work that established Philip K. Dick as an innovator in science fiction while breaking the barrier between science fiction and the serious novel of ideas.

In it Dick offers a haunting vision of history as a nightmare from which it may just be possible to wake.

The River's Tale: A Year on the Mekong by Edward Gargan. . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange -

Along the Mekong, from northern Tibet to Lijiang, from Luang Prabang to Phnom Penh to Can Lo, I moved from one world to another, among cultural islands often ignorant of each other’s presence.

Yet each island, as if built on shifting sands and eroded and reshaped by a universal sea, was re-forming itself, or was being remodeled, was expanding its horizons or sinking under the rising waters of a cultural global warming. It was a journey between worlds, worlds fragiley conjoined by a river both ominous and luminescent, muscular and bosomy, harsh and sensuous. From windswept plateaus to the South China Sea, the Mekong flows for three thousand miles, snaking its way through Southeast Asia.

Long fascinated with this part of the world, Edward Gargan embarked on an ambitious exploration of the Mekong and those living within its watershed.

The River’s Tale is a rare and profound book that delivers more than a correspondent’s account of a place.

It is a seminal examination of the Mekong and its people, a testament to the their struggles, their defeats and their victories.

The Likes of Us: A Biography of the White Working Class by Michael Collins..

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange -

Once they were portrayed as the salt of the earth. Nowadays, they take to the streets when paedophiles and asylum seekers are in their midst; they expose their lives in TV documentaries; they love Gucci and hate the Euro - the broadsheets cast them as xenophobes and exhibitionists and mock their tastes and attitudes.

Who are the white working class and what have they done to deserve this portrayal?

The Likes of Us is a fascinating and wholly original examination of London's white working class.

ERROL FLYNN: Satan's Angel by David Bret.

This book UK was 17.99 - our price 180 baht plus 50% trade in for credit when you finish with it @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange.

Errol Flynn packed more into his fifty years than most of his high-living contemporaries could have done in a dozen lifetimes, yet confessed to having no regrets.

The quintessential hedonist, he had astonishing good looks, a legendary sexual appetite, and a tremendous dramatic talent.

David Brett reveals even more than Errol Flynn himself divulged in his tell-all biography; Flynn's love of brawling; involvement in the Spanish Civil War; part in the New Guinea slave trade; addiction to both drugs and alcohol and of course his numerous relationships and sexual conquests both on and off screen.

This is a compelling, in-depth, uncensored and fast-paced biography that reveals Flynn as he really was - a loveable rebel, a pervert, lecher, charmer and drunkard, but above a legend without equal and one of the undisputed icons of the 20th century.

Bangkok by William Warren

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange -

William Warren’s Bangkok is an informal portrait of this most vibrant and perplexing of modern cities. Divided into two parts, the first is a selective history, showing how Bangkok has developed over the last 200 years, while the second explores the contemporary face of the city through a series of personal impressions. The author explains how the charms of Bangkok and its people outweigh the disadvantages of pollution, traffic and stifling heat.

He also introduces celebrities, such as the early kings of Thailand’s present dynasty and Anna Leonowens, heroine of The King and I, as well as Jim Thompson, the US-born silk entrepreneur and art collector who mysteriously vanished in the jungles of Malaysia. Bangkok provides a much needed history of the city, but is also imbued with the warmth of Warren’s love affair with its frenetic way of life.
