It's a promotion, and she'll be running agents, her favourite activity, but it also means being separated from Charles Wetherby, her old boss, recently widowed and a very close friend.
Attachments in the Intelligence Services are not encouraged: it seems her superiors know more about Liz's life than she thinks.
In Belfast, Liz and her team are monitoring the brutal breakaway Republican groups who never accepted the peace process and want to continue their 'war'.
Intelligence is focused on the shady Fraternity, with links to drug-running, arms-dealing and organised crime.

Paula: A Memoir by Isabel Allende.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop * Book exchange - Cafe * Guesthouse - #Pattaya.

When Isabel Allende's daughter, Paula, became gravely ill and fell into a coma, the author began to write the story of her family for her unconscious child.
In the telling, bizarre ancestors appear before our eyes; we hear both delightful and bitter childhood memories, amazing anecdotes of youthful years, the most intimate Secrets passed along in whispers.
With Paula, Allende has written a powerful autobiography whose straightforward acceptance of the magical and spiritual worlds will remind readers of her first book, The House of the Spirits.

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop * Book exchange - Cafe * Guesthouse - #Pattaya.

Introducing one of the most famous characters in literature, Jean Valjean, the noble peasant imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread.
Les Miserables ranks among the greatest novels of all time.
In it, Victor Hugo takes readers deep into the Parisian underworld, immerses them in a battle between good and evil, and carries them to the barricades during the uprising of 1832 with a breathtaking realism that is unsurpassed in modern prose.
Within his dramatic story are themes that capture the intellect and the emotions: crime and punishment, the relentless persecution of Valjean by Inspector Javert, the desperation of the prostitute Fantine, the amorality of the rogue Thenardier, and the universal Desire to escape the prisons of our own minds.
Les Miserables gave Victor Hugo a canvas upon which he portrayed his criticism of the French political and judicial systems, but the portrait that resulted is larger than life, epic in scope, an extravagant spectacle that dazzles the senses even as it touches the heart.

David Baldacci's remarkable detective Amos Decker, the man who can forget nothing, was first introduced in the sensational Memory Man. Now Decker returns in a stunning new novel....

The Fix

Amos Decker witnesses a murder just outside FBI headquarters. A man shoots a woman execution style on a crowded sidewalk, then turns the gun on himself.

Even with Decker's extraordinary powers of observation and deduction, the killing is baffling.
Decker and his team can find absolutely no connection between the shooter, a family man with a successful consulting business and his victim, a schoolteacher.
Nor is there a hint of any possible motive for the attack.

Carnival in Romans: Mayhem and Massacre in a French City
by Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie

Traded back in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, #Pattaya.

The city of Romans, in Dauphine province in S. France, was the annual scene of a colorfully animated Mardi gras carnival. In 1580, however, winter festivities degenerated into bloody ambush.
While costumed craftsmen and peasants mimed and danced their uprising in the streets, and notables and bourgeoisie hurried from banquets to balls in ostentatious finery, Jean Serve-Paumier, master craftsman, draper and popular party leader was assassinated.
His supporters beaten and pursued by a mob hired by Judge Antoine Guerin, leader of the inflexibly reactionary part of the ruling party.
More than a cruel incident, this night marked the intersection of an urban movement & even larger rural stirrings.
Ladurie marshals a wealth of evidence and reveals the town of Romans as a microcosm of the political and religious antagonisms tearing 16th-century France.

Hindus and Buddhists: Myths and Legends; Sister Nivedita & Ananda K Coomaraswamy.

Traded back in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, #Pattaya.

Philosophy, ritual, and mythology are the three pillars of all ancient religions.
But in India in particular, mythology has been an extremely important medium for teaching abstract spiritual truths, and it has had a profound influence not only on the religious traditions of the country but also on Indian society.
Myths and Legends of the Hindus and Buddhists includes stories from both the great epics of India (the Mahabharata and the Ramayana), and through these stories are introduced two great Avataras of the Hindu tradition:
Rama and Krishna, in addition, this volume includes some charming tales of gods and goddesses from the Puranas. Also included are stories from the Jataka depicting the different births of Buddha prior to his enlightenment.
The common message running through these stories is: No matter how hopeless things may seem, eventually righteousness prevails over unrighteousness and virtue defeats vice.
