For forty-six years and counting, the U.S. government has forbidden its citizens from traveling to Cuba. Fitz Kennedy, Cub reporter for the Bullock telegraph, loses his scoop and his heart to Frankie Wilton, the scheming femme fatale sent to cover the story for the London tabloids. His revenge is sweet when he turns her into the heartless assassin Laura Friday, who with her parrot, Pavarotti, feature in his first novel. the book is an overnight success. In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson...

Traded in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse..

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America's first ambassador to Hitler's Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.

A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence.

Enamored of the New Germany, she has one affair after another, including with the surprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home.

Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler's true character and ruthless ambition.

Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Goring and the expectedly charming - yet wholly sinister - Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity.

The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror.

New Bedlam by Bill Flanagan.........

Traded in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / ...

Meet Bobby Kahn: a smart enough, decent enough man of middle-of-the-road tastes and weaknesses, he's network TV's boy-wonder programming executive - or rather was, until the morning he was unceremoniously fired. Frantic to save face before the news gets out, he lunges for a job running a sorry family cable business in the cozy town of New Bedlam, Rhode Island. It won't take Bobby Kahn long to learn that the length in miles between New York City and New Bedlam does not do justice to the distance between the two worlds. But that itself only begins to explain the gulf in taste and instincts between Bobby Kahn and the Kings, one of the more rewardingly dysfunctional families in recent American fiction.

The patriarch, Dom, who made his fortune in car dealerships and lucked into a cable monopoly in the industry's dark ages, has ceded control of the three networks to his three quarreling children: Annie, the sincere na•f who runs Eureka!, the pretentious arts channel; Skyler, the cocky social climber who runs BoomerBox, the old-sitcom rerun channel; and the family black sheep, the obnoxious Kenny, who presides over the Comic Book Channel, a safe house for ill-socialized comic book devotees. Complicating matters, Bobby learns, is the extent to which the family is in foul odor in New Bedlam.

The Kings' family Secrets, and the enemies they have made along the way, are just a few of the obstacles Bobby has to overcome if he's going to turn around King Cable and make it back to the big leagues. A bit The Devil Wears Prada transplanted to Richard Russo country, New Bedlam is a richly entertaining comic novel whose spit-take-quality laughs carry with them a wealth of sharply-observed insights into America's culture industry and the people who control it, from an author who shows us he's completely unafraid of biting the hand.

I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer - by Michelle McNamara....

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Guesthouse - Cafe - Pattaya...

For more than ten years, a mysterious and violent predator committed fifty sexual assaults in Northern California before moving south, where he perpetrated ten sadistic murders. Then he disappeared, eluding capture by multiple police forces and some of the best detectives in the area.

Three decades later, Michelle McNamara, a true crime journalist who created the popular website TrueCrimeDiary.com, was determined to find the violent psychopath she called "the Golden State Killer." Michelle pored over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark - the masterpiece McNamara was writing at the time of her sudden death - offers an atmospheric snapshot of a moment in American history and a chilling account of a criminal mastermind and the wreckage he left behind.

It is also a portrait of a woman’s obsession and her unflagging pursuit of the truth. Utterly original and compelling, it has been hailed as a modern true crime classic - one which fulfilled Michelle's dream: helping unmask the Golden State Killer.

Metropolis (Bernie Gunther #14) by Philip Kerr

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Guesthouse - Cafe - Pattaya...

Berlin, 1928, the dying days of the Weimar Republic shortly before Hitler and the Nazis came to power.

It was a period of decadence and excess as Berliners - after the terrible slaughter of WWI and the hardships that followed - are enjoying their own version of Babylon. Bernie is a young detective working in Vice when he gets a summons from Bernard Weiss, Chief of Berlin's Criminal Police.

He invites Bernie to join KIA - Criminal Inspection A - the supervisory body for all homicide investigation in Kripo. Bernie's first task is to investigate the Silesian Station killings - four prostitutes murdered in as many weeks.

All of them have been hit over the head with a hammer and then scalped with a sharp knife.Bernie hardly has time to acquaint himself with the case files before another prostitute is murdered.

Until now, no one has shown much interest in these victims - there are plenty in Berlin who'd like the streets washed clean of such degenerates.

But this time the girl's father runs Berlin's foremost criminal ring, and he's prepared to go to extreme lengths to find his daughter's killer.

Then a second series of murders begins - of crippled wartime veterans who beg in the city's streets. It seems that someone is determined to clean up Berlin of anyone less than perfect. The voice of Nazism is becoming a roar that threatens to drown out all others.

But not Bernie Gunther's ...

The Last Lieutenant: A Foxhole View of the Epic Battle for Iwo Jima by John C. Shively..

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya...

Iwo Jima: two words that will forever bring to mind the thirty-six days of continual, chaotic combat in which the U.S. Marines fought the entrenched Japanese for every inch of the tiny volcanic island.

When it was over, more than twenty-six thousand Americans were killed or wounded, and only slightly more than two hundred Japanese defenders survived. Twenty-seven Medals of Honor were awarded - many posthumously.

Jim Craig was a platoon commander with the Marines on Iwo Jima. This is his story, as told to his nephew John C. Shively. In a particularly vivid and exciting account of some of the most intense fighting of the Pacific War, the immediacy of the story is heightened by the detail that Shively’s research has added to Craig’s recollections. The result will pull you onto the beach, into the foxhole, and over Mount Suribachi with those who lived, fought, and died on Iwo Jima.

Eight Lives Down by Chris Hunter..

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya...

Visceral and compelling, Eight Lives Down is the most exciting and nerve-jangling work of military non-fiction since Bravo Two Zero. If fate is against me and I’m killed, so be it, but make it quick and painless. If I’m wounded, don’t let me be crippled. But above all, don’t let me fuck up the task. So goes the bomb technician’s prayer before every bomb he defuses. For Chris Hunter, it is a prayer he says many times during his four-month tour of Iraq.

His is the most dangerous job in the world - to make safe the British sector in Iraq against some of the most hardened and technically advanced terrorists in the world. It is a 24/7 job - in the first two months alone, his team defuses over 45 bombs. And the people they’re up against don’t play by the Geneva Convention. For them, there are no RULES, only results - death by any means necessary.

The job of a Bomb Disposal officer is a lonely one. You are alone with the sound of your own breathing and the drumming of your heart in a protective suit in forty-plus degrees of heat. The drawbridge has been pulled up behind you as you advance on your goal. It’s just you and the bomb. But for Chris Hunter, just when life couldn’t get any more dangerous, the stakes are raised again.

Martin Luther: Catholic Dissident by Peter Stanford. .. ...

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Guesthouse - Cafe - Pattaya..

A new appraisal of theological firebrand Martin Luther, on the 500th anniversary of the religious revolution he triggered - the Protestant Reformation. The 31st of October 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther pinning his 95 'Theses' - or reform proposals - to the door of his local university church in Wittenberg.

Most scholars now agree that the details of this eye-catching gesture are more legend than hammer and nails, but what is certainly true is that on this day (probably in a letter to his local Archbishop in Mainz), the Augustinian Friar and theologian issued an outspokenly blunt challenge to his own Catholic Church to reform itself from within - especially over the sale of 'indulgences' - which ultimately precipitated a huge religious and political upheaval right across Europe and divided mainstream Christianity ever after.

A new, popular biography from journalist Peter Stanford, looking at Martin Luther from within his Catholic context, examining his actual aims for Catholicism as well as his enduring legacy - and where he might fit within the church today.

The Woman Who Walked Into Doors by Roddy Doyle.......

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya...

In Ireland, the euphemism ""she walked into a door"" is so loaded with grim implications of domestic abuse that it is usually whispered, not spoken. In this astonishing new work from Doyle (whose most recent novel, Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, won the 1993 Booker Prize).

Dublin housewife and mother Paula Spencer narrates her life as a spouse who walks into doors. Hopelessly in love with heavy drinker and relentless sadist Charlo, Paula is gradually engulfed in psychic darkness, every last particle of self-esteem literally beaten out of her.

The devastation of her world is made even more wrenching by her chatty, captivating storytelling, flush with Doyle's knack for Dublin humor, vernacular and local color. With this book, Doyle attains a new level of excellence. He writes about a woman's experience with a perception that is rare, a compassion that is scorching and an uncompromising frankness that splinters his heroine's suffering directly into the reader's heart.

Doyle triumphs here, with a tough-minded but deeply moving exploration of a wretched marriage, a microcosm of a pervasive situation in Ireland that few will acknowledge.

An Impeccable Spy: Richard Sorge, Stalin’s Master Agent by Owen Matthews.......

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Guesthouse - Cafe - Pattaya..

The thrilling true story of Richard Sorge - the man John le Carré called 'the spy to end spies', and whose actions turned the tide of the Second World War Richard Sorge was a man with two homelands. Born of a German father and a Russian mother in Baku in 1895, he moved in a world of shifting alliances and infinite possibility. A member of the angry and deluded generation who found new, radical faiths after their experiences on the battlefields of the First World War, Sorge became a fanatical communist - and the Soviet Union's most formidable spy.

Like many great spies, Sorge was an effortless seducer, combining charm with ruthless manipulation. He did not have to go undercover to find out closely guarded state Secrets - his victims willingly shared them. As a foreign correspondent, he infiltrated and influenced the highest echelons of German, Chinese and Japanese society in the years leading up to and including the Second World War.

His intelligence regarding Operation Barbarossa and Japanese intentions not to invade Siberia in 1941 proved pivotal to the Soviet counteroffensive in the Battle of Moscow, which in turn determined the outcome of the war. Never before has Sorge's story been told from the Russian side as well as the German and Japanese. Owen Matthews takes a sweeping historical perspective and draws on a wealth of declassified Soviet archives - along with testimonies from those who knew and worked with Sorge - to rescue the riveting story of the man described by Ian Fleming as 'the most formidable spy in history'.

Not a Hero in Sight by Brad Cooper..

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Guesthouse - Cafe - Pattaya..

Many authors have written of heroes and victories, of which Australia has had more than its fair share, but the earthy and ridiculous may appeal more to those of us who can identify with the less than heroic. These are stories which could not be told to the child who innocently asks “What did you do in the war Grandpa?” Not A Hero In Sight is an irreverent account of an ex-digger’s life and reflections from his early childhood to the present with the emphasis on the period before, during and after the Vietnam Conflict. It is bawdy, sardonic, humorous, delightfully politically incorrect, honest and most importantly true. Every Australian digger, and for that matter, ex-servicemen from any country, could relate to these tales.     All civilians should also get a giggle out of real-life soldiering.

Manuscript Found in Accra by Paulo Coelho..

Traded In @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya...

“There is nothing wrong with anxiety. Although we cannot control God’s time, it is part of the human condition to want to receive the thing we are waiting for as quickly as possible. Or to drive away whatever is causing fear. Anxiety was born in the very same moment as mankind. And since we will never be able to master it, we will have to learn to live with it - just as we have learned to live with storms." 1099. Jerusalem awaits the invasion of the crusaders who have surrounded the city’s gates. There, inside the ancient city’s walls, women and men of every age and faith have gathered to hear the wisdom of a mysterious man known only as the Copt.  As the wise man speaks of loyalty, fear, bravery and solitude, of love, sex, beauty and elegance, his words offer truth and guidance, and reveal the human values that have endured throughout time - then as now, his words reveal who we are, what we fear and what we hope for the future.
