DemoCRIPS and ReBLOODlicans: No More Gangs in Government by Jesse Ventura. . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange /

DemoCRIPS and ReBLOODlicans uncovers the truth about how corporations have bought the American electoral and legislative process through the power of lobbyists, campaign contributions, and political action committees.

Using historical details, such as the development of the two-party system and the advent of third-party candidates throughout U.S. history, DemoCRIPS and ReBLOODlicans exposes how the two major parties have allowed corporations, businesses, and politically-motivated wealthy individuals to manipulate elections, bribe elected officials, and silence the average American voter.  Exposing the ineptitude and gang-like mentalities of both parties, Ventura advocates the replacement of the two-party system with a no-party system based on the ideals of our Founding Fathers.

As election time rolls around, this is most certainly the book that should be looked at for reforming our electoral system.

The Age of Nothing: How We Have Sought to Live Since the Death of God Hardcover – 2014 - by Peter Watson...

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange...

The closing months of 2008 saw the world's nations united in financial uncertainty. Amid endless reports of collapsing stock markets, failed banks, fiscal fraud and snowballing unemployment, THE AGE OF NOTHING offers a compelling insight into the demise of capitalism and the beginning of a new era.

Peter Watson's scintillating thesis argues that the unprecedented credit crunch of 2008 was the result of a fundamental change in the fabric of society - one that became truly visible only as it reached its culmination.

In a commanding narrative, Watson provides a historical perspective on the shift in our attitudes towards capitalism, while exploring the philosophical roots that underpin it. Of central importance in Watson's theory is Nietzsche's warning regarding mankind's responsibility for 'the death of God' - and the consequences thereof.

Nietzsche's views on the frailty of human values in a world bereft of religious faith were echoed by writers including Tolstoy, Marx and Kandinsky - and his chilling message went on to resonate with thinkers throughout the 20th century.

When Max Weber called the modern world 'disenchanted', and argued that society must choose to create a new value system based on knowledge or else surrender and embrace a religious faith, he was the latest in a long line of intellectuals attempting to address the problem Nietzsche had laid bare.

With the arrival of THE AGE OF NOTHING, the line continues. The work fills a crucial gap in our intellectual history and serves as a comprehensive study of society's current predicament - as well as a timely answer to the question of what to do next.

Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions Among the Converted Peoples by V.S. Naipaul. . . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange...

Fourteen years after the publication of his landmark travel narrative Among the Believers, V. S. Naipaul returned to the four non-Arab Islamic countries he reported on so vividly at the time of Ayatollah Khomeini's triumph in Iran. Beyond Belief is the result of his five-month journey in 1995 through Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, and Malaysia lands where descendants of Muslim converts live at odds with indigenous traditions, and where dreams of Islamic purity clash with economic and political realities. In extended conversations with a vast number of people--a rare survivor of the martyr brigades of the Iran-Iraq war, a young intellectual training as a Marxist guerilla in Balochistan, an impoverished elderly couple in Teheran whose dusty Baccarat chandeliers preserve the memory of vanished wealth, and countless others V. S. Naipaul deliberately effaces himself to let the voices of his subjects come through.

Yet the result is a collection of stories that has the author's unmistakable stamp. With its incisive observation and brilliant cultural analysis, Beyond Belief is a startling and revelatory addition to the Naipaul canon.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. . .

Traded in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange...

Ray Bradbury’s internationally acclaimed novel Fahrenheit 451 is a masterwork of twentieth-century literature set in a bleak, dystopian future. Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out.

His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family.”

But then he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television. When Mildred attempts suicide and Clarisse suddenly disappears, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known. He starts hiding books in his home, and when his pilfering is discovered, the fireman has to run for his life.

The Book of Lies by Brad Meltzer. . .

Traded in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange...

In Chapter Four of the Bible, Cain kills Abel. It is the world's most famous murder.

But the Bible is silent about one key detail: the weapon Cain used to kill his brother. That weapon is still lost to history.

In 1932, Mitchell Siegel was killed by three gunshots to his chest.

While mourning, his son dreamed of a bulletproof man and created the world's greatest hero: Superman and like Cain's murder weapon, the gun used in this unsolved murder has never been found.

Today in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Cal Harper comes face-to-face with his own family tragedy: his long-missing father has been shot with a gun that traces back to Mitchell Siegel's 1932 murder.

But soon after their surprising reunion, Cal and his father are attacked by a ruthless killer tattooed with the ancient markings of Cain.

So begins the chase for the world's first murder weapon. It is a race that will pull Cal back into his own past even as it propels him forward through the true story of Cain and Abel, an eighty-year-old unsolvable puzzle, and the deadly organization known for the past century as the Leadership.

What does Cain, history's greatest villain, have to do with Superman, the world's greatest hero?

And what do two murders, committed thousands of years apart, have in common? This is the mystery at the heart of Brad Meltzer's new thriller.

The Bangkok Cowboys by Alexander Lewis.

Asia books 460 baht - our price 160 baht @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange...

The Bangkok Cowboys is a gritty, straight talking tale based on true events with dashes of unique northern humour in parts, bringing to life the astonishing journey of two working class men told by the writer in their own words, how they struggled working the streets in the rag trade throughout the North East of England.

After them being held down by higher forces, they eventually get the break in the used-clothing industry using their wits and determination and become successful exporters into Eastern Europe. Striking up a friendship with their new Eastern European buyers, they soon realize that things are not all what they seem and they are foolishly drawn into the paranoid world of trafficking cocaine out of England.

Being overwhelmed by their new found wealth takes them on a path to the hedonistic world of Thailand’s red light districts, believing Thailand was the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow; their minds become blurred from the true reality of life. They then team up with an ex-Liverpool bouncer living in Bangkok, for their most daring plan of the whole operation, maybe thinking they were untouchable or they walked on water, they entered the corrupt world of Thailand.

As always, in Thailand, money is number one to the Thais; this causing a dramatic showdown with the corrupt Thai police for an ending packed with suspense and betrayal, showing Thailand’s corruption at its best

Bangkok Noir by Christopher G. Moore - Stephen Leather - Pico Iyer - Colin Cotterill - Collin Piprell - Eric Stone - Timothy Hallinan - Alex Kerr.. .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange...

Bangkok is one of the great cities in the world, but unlike other great metropolises it has no noir tales to its name. Bangkok Noir puts that to right. In this first ever noir anthology of Bangkok, twelve seasoned and internationally known - Thai and Western writers have come together to make a powerful collection of crime fiction short stories that portray the dark side of this Asian metropolis where the lives of most citizens seem as far away from heaven as its Thai name Krungthep is distant from its meaning - City of Angels. In Bangkok Noir, the twelve short stories of various shades of black involve gangsters and hitmen, love and betrayal, the supernatural, the possessed and the dispossessed, and the far distant future.

Titles in this collection include: John Burdett’s Gone East, Stephen Leather’s Inspector Zhang and the Dead Thai Gangster, Tew Bunnag’s The Mistress Wants Her Freedom, Colin Cotterill’s Halfhead, Pico Iyer’s Thousand and One Nights, Vasit Dejkunjorn's The Sword, Alex Kerr's Daylight, Timothy Hallinan's Hansum Man, Eric Stone's The Lunch That Got Away, Dean Barrett's Death of a Legend, Collin Piprell's Hot Enough to Kill, and Christopher G. Moore’s Dolphin Inc. The authors and publisher will donate half of their earnings from this book to selected charity organizations which provide education to needy children in Thailand.

Nature via Nurture: Genes, experience and what makes us human by Matt Ridley..

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange...

Acclaimed author Matt Ridley's thrilling follow-up to his bestseller Genome.

Armed with the extraordinary new discoveries about our genes, Ridley turns his attention to the nature versus nurture debate to bring the first popular account of the roots of human behaviour.

What makes us who we are?

In February 2001 it was announced that the genome contains not 100,000 genes as originally expected but only 30,000.

This startling revision led some scientists to conclude that there are simply not enough human genes to account for all the different ways people behave: we must be made by nurture, not nature.

Matt Ridley argues that the emerging truth is far more interesting than this myth.

Nurture depends on genes, too, and genes need nurture. Genes not only predetermine the broad structure of the brain; they also absorb formative experiences, react to social cues and even run memory.

They are consequences as well as causes of the will.

Published fifty years after the discovery of the double helix of DNA, Nature via Nurture chronicles a new revolution in our understanding of genes.

Ridley recounts the hundred years' war between the partisans of nature and nurture to explain how this paradoxical creature, the human being, can be simultaneously free-willed and motivated by instinct and culture.

Nature via Nurture is an enthralling, up-to-the-minute account of how genes build brains to absorb experience.
