An Evening With Johnners by Brian Johnston Barry Johnston (Editor)..

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop.....

In 1993, at the age of 80, Brian Johnston embarked on his first ever concert tour, a one-man show called An Evening With Johnners, which blended stories about his life with the many jokes and puns for which he was renowned.

Two recordings were made from it - An Evening With Johnners and An Hour With Johnners. This book combines material from both in which Johnston recalls his life, from his college days, to his war service, to his work for the BBC.

Brian Johnston will be remembered as "the voice of cricket".

The Kingdom by the Sea & The old Patagonian Express by Paul Theroux

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Guesthouse - Cafe. .

It was 1982, the summer of the Falkland Islands War, and the birth of the royal heir, Prince William and the ideal time, Theroux found, to surprise the British into talking about themselves.

The result is a candid, funny, perceptive, and opinionated travelogue of his journey and his findings.

The Old Patagonian Express: By Train Through the Americas..

Paul Theroux invites you aboard The Old Patagonian Express by Train through the Americas; packed with powerful descriptions and portraits of the many colours of humanity, The Old Patagonian Express is an unforgettable read. A witty sharply observed journey down the length of North and South America Beginning his journey in Boston, where he boarded the subway commuter train, and catching trains of all kinds on the way, Paul Theroux tells of his voyage from ice-bound Massachusetts and Illinois to the arid plateau of Argentina's most southerly tip.

Sweating and shivering by turns as the temperature and altitude shoot up and down, thrown in with the appalling Mr Thornberry in Limón and reading nightly to the blind writer, Borges, in Buenos Aires, Theroux vividly evokes the contrasts of a journey 'to the end of the line'. American travel writer Paul Theroux is known for the rich descriptions of people and places that is often streaked with his distinctive sense of irony; his other non-fiction titles, Riding the Iron Rooster, The Happy Isles of Oceania, Sunrise with Seamonsters, The Kingdom by the Sea, The Tao of Travel, Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, The Great Railway Bazaar, Dark Star Safari, Fresh-air Fiend, Sir Vidia's Shadow, The Pillars of Hercules, and his novels and collections of short stories, including the James Tait Black Memorial Prize winner The Mosquito Coast

Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange..

Far from the Madding Crowd was Thomas Hardy's first major literary success, and it edited with an introduction and notes by Rosemarie Morgan and Shannon Russell in Penguin Classics. Independent and spirited Bathsheba Everdene has come to Weatherbury to take up her position as a farmer on the largest estate in the area.

Her bold presence draws three very different suitors: the gentleman-farmer Boldwood, soldier-seducer Sergeant Troy and the devoted shepherd Gabriel Oak.

Each, in contrasting ways, unsettles her decisions and complicates her life, and tragedy ensues, threatening the stability of the whole community.

The first of his works set in the fictional county of Wessex, Hardy's novel of swift passion and slow courtship is imbued with his evocative descriptions of rural life and landscapes, and with unflinching honesty about sexual relationships.

The Devil's Punchbowl by Greg Iles. . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse, Pattaya, Thailand...

FROM AUTHOR GREG ILES COMES HIS MOST ELECTRIFYING THRILLER YET.

The Devil's Punchbowl reveals a world of depravity, sex, violence, and the corruption of a Southern town.

As a prosecuting attorney in Houston, Penn Cage sent hardened killers to death row.

But it is as mayor of his hometown, Natchez, Mississippi, that Penn will face his most dangerous threat.

Urged by old friends to try to restore this fading jewel of the Old South, Penn has ridden into office on a tide of support for change.

But in its quest for new jobs and fresh money, Natchez, like other Mississippi towns, has turned to casino gambling, and now five fantastical steamboats float on the river beside the old slave market at Natchez like props from Gone With the Wind. But one boat isn't like the others. Rumor has it that the Magnolia Queen has found a way to pull the big players from Las Vegas to its Mississippi backwater. And with them, on sleek private jets that slip in and out of town like whispers in the night - come pro football players, rap stars, and international gamblers, all sharing an unquenchable taste for one thing: blood sport -and the dark vices that go with it.

When a childhood friend of Penn's who brings him evidence of these crimes is brutally murdered, the full weight of Penn's failure to protect his city hits home.

So begins his quest to find the men responsible. But it's a hunt he begins alone, for the local authorities have been corrupted by the money and power of his hidden enemy. With his family's lives at stake, Penn realizes his only allies in his one-man war are those bound to him by blood or honor: Caitlin Masters, the lover Penn found in The Quiet Can Game and lost in Turning Angel Danny McDavitt, the heroic helicopter pilot from Tom Cage, Penn's father and legendary local family physician Walt Garrity, a retired Texas Ranger who served with Penn's father during the Korean War. Together they must defeat a sophisticated killer who has an almost preternatural ability to anticipate and counter, their every move. Ultimately, victory will depend on a bold stroke that will leave one of Penn's allies dead and Natchez changed forever. After appearing in two of Iles's most popular novels, Penn Cage makes his triumphant return as a brilliant, honorable, and courageous hero. Rich with Southern atmosphere and marked by one jaw-dropping plot turn after another, The Devil's Punchbowl Confirms Confirms that Greg Iles is America's master of suspense.

Glue (Terry Lawson #1) by Irvine Welsh

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Guesthouse - Cafe. .

Glue is the story of four boys growing up in the Edinburgh schemes, and about the loyalties, the experiences and the Secrets - that hold them together into their thirties.

Four boys becoming men: Juice Terry, the work-shy fanny-merchant, with corkscrew curls and sticky fingers; Billy the boxer, driven, controlled, playing to his strengths; Carl, the Milky Bar Kid, drifting along to his own soundtrack and the doomed Gally - who has one less skin than everyone else and seems to find catastrophe at every corner.

As we follow their lives from the seventies into the new century - from punk to techno, from speed to Es, we can see each of them trying to struggle out from under the weight of the conditioning of class and culture, peer pressure and their parents' hopes that maybe their sons will do better than they did.

What binds the four of them is the friendship formed by the scheme, their school, and their ambition to escape from both, their loyalty fused in street morality back up your mates, don't hit women and, most importantly, never grass - on anyone.

Despite its scale and ambition, Glue has all Irvine Welsh's usual pace and vigour, crackling dialogue, scabrous set-pieces and black, black humour, but it is also a grown-up book about growing up, about the way we live our lives, and what happens to us when things become unstuck.

Pursued by anonymous executioners to the dark corners of Europe, he is forced to play a game of survival by blood rules he thought he’d long left behind.

Dominion by C.J. Sansom. . .

140 baht @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse, Pattaya.

1952........

Twelve years have passed since Churchill lost to the appeasers, and Britain surrendered to Nazi Germany after Dunkirk.

As the long German war against Russia rages on in the east, the British people find themselves under dark authoritarian rule, the press, radio and television are controlled; the streets patrolled by violent auxiliary police and British Jews face ever greater constraints.

There are terrible rumours too about what is happening in the basement of the German Embassy at Senate House. Defiance, though, is growing. In Britain, Winston Churchill's Resistance organisation is increasingly a thorn in the government's side.

And in a Birmingham mental hospital an incarcerated scientist, Frank Muncaster, may hold a secret that could change the balance of the world struggle forever.

Civil Servant David Fitzgerald, secretly acting as a spy for the Resistance, is given by them the mission to rescue his old friend Frank and get him out of the country.

Before long he, together with a disparate group of Resistance activists, will find themselves fugitives in the midst of London’s Great Smog; as David’s wife Sarah finds herself drawn into a world more terrifying than she ever could have imagined.

And hard on their heels is Gestapo Sturmbannfuhrer Gunther Hoth, brilliant, implacable hunter of men .

Larry Bond's First Team (Larry Bond's First Team #1) by Larry Bond. . . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange..

In these harrowing times, with our enemies lurking in the shadows and their widespread tactics of unconventional warfare limiting the ability of our traditional armed forces, special measures are needed to fight this war on terror. Heeding this call the President has set up the Joint Services Special Demands Project. Known as "The Team" it is a unique unit existing beyond the bureaucratic restraints of either the U.S. intelligence or military establishments.

With an almost unlimited budget, the Team - consisting of a CIA officer, two Special Forces commandos, and one outnumbered Marine, is authorized to track vital intelligence and then take immediate action.

Called upon to track a quantity of radioactive waste that has gone missing in the former Soviet Union, the Team is faced with the fact that this material is now in the wrong people's hands. . . .

And these terrorists are geared to wage the single deadliest attack ever on U.S. soil.

Puckoon by Spike Milligan. ..

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse,

Puckoon is Spike Milligan's classic slapstick novel, reissued for the first time since it was published in 1963. In 1924 the Boundary Commission is tasked with creating the new official division between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.

Through incompetence, dereliction of duty and sheer perversity, the border ends up running through the middle of the small town of Puckoon. Houses are divided from outhouses, husbands separated from wives, bars are cut off from their patrons, churches sundered from graveyards.

And in the middle of it all is poor Dan Milligan, our feckless protagonist, who is taunted and manipulated by everyone (including the sadistic author) to try and make some sense of this mess . . . Spike Milligan was one of the greatest and most influential comedians of the twentieth century.

Born in India in 1918, he served in the Royal Artillery during WWII in North Africa and Italy.

At the end of the war, he forged a career as a jazz musician, sketch-show writer and performer, before joining forces with Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe to form the legendary Goon Show.

Until his death in 2002, he had success as on stage and screen and as the author of over eighty books of fiction, memoir, poetry, plays, cartoons and children's stories.

Classic World War II Aircraft Cutaways (Transport) by Bill Gunston...

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange.

Established in the early days of aviation, "Flight" and "The Aeroplane" were considered essential reading for all aviation enthusiasts of the period, "Aeroplane Monthly", the latter's successor, is today viewed in a similar vein.

Many of these fine cutaways, featuring virtually every major combat type, are being republished here after years in the archives.

All the major Allied and Axis combat types of World War II are covered in this period work, and the cutaways are accompanied by the best photography from the huge "Aeroplane" picture archive, individual specifications, and a potted history of each type and of the cutaway artists themselves by aviation historian Bill Gunston.
