The Ninja (Nicholas Linnear #1) by Eric Van Lustbader..
"Totally absorbing...as gripping a tale of hatred and revenge as you will read...It is superb." This is the story of Nicholas Linnear, half-Caucasian, half-Oriental, a man caught between East and West, between the sexual passions of a woman he can't forget and the one he can't control and between a past he can't escape and a destiny he can't avoid. A sprawling erotic thriller that swings from postwar Japan to present-day New York in a relentless saga of violence and terror elaborately designed for the most savage vengeance of all...

The River's Tale: A Year on the Mekong - by Edward Gargan...

Traded in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange..

Along the Mekong, from northern Tibet to Lijiang, from Luang Prabang to Phnom Penh to Can Lo, I moved from one world to another, among cultural islands often ignorant of each other’s presence.
Yet each island, as if built on shifting sands and eroded and reshaped by a universal sea, was re-forming itself, or was being remodeled, was expanding its horizons or sinking under the rising waters of a cultural global warming. It was a journey between worlds, worlds fragiley conjoined by a river both ominous and luminescent, muscular and bosomy, harsh and sensuous.

From windswept plateaus to the South China Sea, the Mekong flows for three thousand miles, snaking its way through Southeast Asia.
Long fascinated with this part of the world, you may embark on an ambitious exploration of the Mekong and those living within its watershed.
The River’s Tale is a rare and profound book that delivers more than a correspondent’s account of a place.
It is a seminal examination of the Mekong and its people, a testament to the their struggles, their defeats and their victories.

One Man's View of the World by Lee Kuan Yew...

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange..

Born in 1923, Singapore's former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew has spent a lifetime being intimately involved in international affairs.
He has met every major Chinese leader from Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping and hobnobbed with American presidents from Lyndon Johnson to Barack Obama.
In this book, Lee draws on that wealth of experience and depth of insight to offer his views on today's world and what it might look like in 20 years.
This is no dry geopolitical treatise.
Nor is it a thematic account of the twists and turns in global affairs.
Instead, in this broad-sweep narrative that takes in America, China, Asia and Europe, he parses their society, probes the psyche of the people and draws his conclusions about their chances for survival and just where they might land in the hierarchy of tomorrow's balance of power.
What makes a society tick?
What do its people really believe?
Can it adapt?
In spare, unflinching prose that eschews political correctness, he describes a China that remains obsessed with control from the centre on its way to an unstoppable rise; an America that will have to share its pre-eminence despite its never-say-die dynamism; and a Europe that struggles with the challenges of keeping its union intact. His candid and often startling views - on why Japan is closed to foreigners, why the Arab Spring won't bring one man, one vote to the Middle East, and why preventing global warming is not going to be as fruitful as preparing for it - make this a fresh and gripping read.
Lee completes the book by looking into the future of Singapore - his enduring concern - and by offering the reader a glimpse into his personal life and his view of death.
The book is interspersed with a Q&A section in each chapter, gleaned from conversations he had with journalists from The Straits Times.

Cleverlands: The Secrets behind the success of the world's education superpowers by Lucy Crehan..

Traded in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange - Cafe - Guesthouse..

Secondary school teacher and education consultant Lucy Crehan was frustrated with ever-changing government policies on education; dissatisfied with a system that prioritised test scores over the promotion of creative thinking; and disheartened that the interests of children had become irrelevant.
And yet, politicians and administrators consistently told her that this was how the world’s ‘top performing’ school systems operated.
Curious to discover how they could operate in the same way but perform so much better in Maths, Reading and Science, Lucy dug deeper and was shocked by what she found: the politicians and administrators were wrong.
The ‘top performing’ schools were designing education in completely different ways from the UK and from each other, and yet, despite their differences, they were all getting top marks.
Determined to find answers she couldn’t get from reports and graphs, Lucy set off on a journey around the globe to see these schools and students for herself.
Cleverlands is the story of her journey through Finland, Canada, Japan, China and Singapore, five countries regularly at the top of the education charts.
She spent three weeks immersed in classrooms in each country, living with teachers, listening to parents, teaching, watching and asking questions.
The result is a guided tour of the world’s best educational systems and a reflection on what success in the UK might look like in light of these varying possibilities… not just what our politicians would have us believe.

The Quants: How a New Breed of Math Whizzes Conquered Wall Street and Nearly Destroyed It by Scott Patterson..
@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange..
“Beware of geeks bearing formulas.” --Warren Buffett. In March of 2006, the world’s richest men sipped champagne in an opulent New York hotel.
They were preparing to compete in a poker tournament with million-dollar stakes, but those numbers meant nothing to them.
They were accustomed to risking billions. At the card table that night was Peter Muller, an eccentric, whip-smart whiz kid who’d studied theoretical mathematics at Princeton and now managed a fabulously successful hedge fund called PDT…when he wasn’t playing his keyboard for morning commuters on the New York subway.  With him was Ken Griffin, who as an undergraduate trading convertible bonds out of his Harvard dorm room had outsmarted the Wall Street pros and made money in one of the worst bear markets of all time.
Now he was the tough-as-nails head of Citadel Investment Group, one of the most powerful money machines on earth.
There too were Cliff Asness, the sharp-tongued, mercurial founder of the hedge fund AQR, a man as famous for his computer-smashing rages as for his brilliance, and Boaz Weinstein, chess life-master and king of the credit default swap, who while juggling $30 billion worth of positions for Deutsche Bank found time for frequent visits to Las Vegas with the famed MIT card-counting team.   On that night in 2006, these four men and their cohorts were the new kings of Wall Street.  Muller, Griffin, Asness, and Weinstein were among the best and brightest of a  new breed, the quants.  Over the prior twenty years, this species of math whiz - technocrats who make billions not with gut calls or fundamental analysis but with formulas and high-speed computers, had usurped the testosterone-fueled, kill-or-be-killed risk-takers who’d long been the alpha males the world’s largest casino.
The quants believed that a dizzying, indecipherable-to-mere-mortals cocktail of differential calculus, quantum physics, and advanced geometry held the key to reaping riches from the financial markets.
And they helped create a digitized money-trading machine that could shift billions around the globe with the click of a mouse.   Few realized that night, though, that in creating this unprecedented machine, men like Muller, Griffin, Asness and Weinstein had sowed the seeds for history’s greatest financial disaster.   Drawing on unprecedented access to these four number-crunching titans, The Quants tells the inside story of what they thought and felt in the days and weeks when they helplessly watched much of their net worth vaporize and wondered just how their mind-bending formulas and genius-level IQ had led them so wrong, so fast.
Had their years of success been dumb luck, fool’s gold, a good run that could come to an end on any given day?  What if The Truth they sought, the secret of the markets wasn’t knowable? Worse, what if there wasn’t any Truth? In The Quants, Scott Patterson tells the story not just of these men, but of Jim Simons, the reclusive founder of the most successful hedge fund in history; Aaron Brown, the quant who used his math skills to humiliate Wall Street’s old guard at their trademark game of Liar’s Poker, and years later found himself with a front-row seat to the rapid emergence of mortgage-backed securities - and gadflies and dissenters such as Paul Wilmott, Nassim Taleb, and Benoit Mandelbrot.   With the immediacy of today’s NASDAQ close and the timeless power of a Greek tragedy, The Quants is at once a masterpiece of explanatory journalism, a gripping tale of ambition and hubris…and an ominous warning about Wall Street’s future.

The Last Templar (Templar #1) by Raymond Khoury...
@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange..
"It has served us well, this myth of Christ." Pope Leo X, 16th Century. In a hail of fire and flashing sword, as the burning city of Acre falls from the hands of the West in 1291, The Last Templar opens with a young Templar knight, his mentor, and a handful of others escaping to the sea carrying a mysterious chest entrusted to them by the Order's dying Grand Master.
The ship vanishes without a trace. In present day Manhattan, four masked horsemen dressed as Templar Knights emerge from Central Park and ride up the Fifth Avenue steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art during the blacktie opening of a Treasures of the Vatican exhibit.
Storming through the crowds, the horsemen brutally attack anyone standing between them and their prize.
Attending the gala, archaeologist Tess Chaykin watches in silent terror as the leader of the horsemen hones in on one piece in particular, a strange geared device.
He utters a few cryptic Latin words as he takes hold of it with reverence before leading the horsemen out and disappearing into the night. In the aftermath, an FBI investigation is led by anti-terrorist specialist Sean Reilly. Soon, he and Tess are drawn into the dark, hidden history of the crusading Knights, plunging them into a deadly game of cat and mouse with ruthless killers as they race across three continents to recover the lost secret of the Templars.

Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance - by Noam Chomsky. . . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange.. ..

An immediate national bestseller, Hegemony or Survival demonstrates how, for more than half a century the United States has been pursuing a grand imperial strategy with the aim of staking out the globe.
Our leaders have shown themselves willing-as in the Cuban missile crisis-to follow the dream of dominance no matter how high the risks.
World-renowned intellectual Noam Chomsky investigates how we came to this perilous moment and why our rulers are willing to jeopardize the future of our species.

With the striking logic that is his trademark, Chomsky tracks the U.S. government's aggressive pursuit of "full spectrum dominance" and vividly lays out how the most recent manifestations of the politics of global control-from unilateralism to the dismantling of international agreements to state terrorism-cohere in a drive for hegemony that ultimately threatens our existence.
Lucidly written, thoroughly documented, and featuring a new afterword by the author, Hegemony or Survival is a definitive statement from one of today's most influential thinkers.

The Cold Six Thousand by James Ellroy. . . . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange..

In this savagely audacious novel, James Ellroy plants a pipe bomb under the America in the 1960's, lights the fuse, and watches the shrapnel fly.
On November 22, 1963 three men converge in Dallas. Their job: to clean up the JFK hit’s loose ends and inconvenient witnesses.
They are Wayne Tedrow, Jr., a Las Vegas cop with family ties to the lunatic right; Ward J. Littell, a defrocked FBI man turned underworld mouthpiece; and Pete Bondurant, a dope-runner and hit-man who serves as the mob’s emissary to the anti-Castro underground.

It goes bad from there. For the next five years these night-riders run a whirlwind of plots and counterplots: Howard Hughes’s takeover of Vegas, J. Edgar Hoover’s war against the civil rights movement, the heroin trade in Vietnam, and the murders of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy. Wilder than L. A. Confidential, more devastating than American Tabloid, The Cold Six Thousand establishes Ellroy as one of our most fearless novelists.

Operation Mincemeat: The True Spy Story That Changed the Course of World War II by Ben Macintyre... . .

Find this and many more like it in the War section @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange..

One April morning in 1943, a sardine fisherman spotted the corpse of a British soldier floating in the sea off the coast of Spain and set in train a course of events that would change the course of the Second World War.
Operation Mincemeat was the most successful wartime deception ever attempted, and certainly the strangest.
It hoodwinked the Nazi espionage chiefs, sent German troops hurtling in the wrong direction, and saved thousands of lives by deploying a secret agent who was different, in one crucial respect, from any spy before or since: he was dead.
His mission: to convince the Germans that instead of attacking Sicily, the Allied armies planned to invade Greece.
The brainchild of an eccentric RAF officer and a brilliant Jewish barrister, the great hoax involved an extraordinary cast of characters including a famous forensic pathologist, a gold-prospector, an inventor, a beautiful secret service secretary, a submarine captain, three novelists, a transvestite English spymaster, an irascible admiral who loved fly-fishing and a dead Welsh tramp.
Using fraud, imagination and seduction, Churchill's team of spies spun a web of deceit so elaborate and so convincing that they began to believe it themselves.
The deception started in a windowless basement beneath Whitehall.
It travelled from London to Scotland to Spain to Germany. And it ended up on Hitler's desk.
Ben Macintyre, bestselling author of "Agent Zigzag", weaves together private documents, photographs, memories, letters and diaries, as well as newly released material from the intelligence files of MI5 and Naval Intelligence, to tell for the first time the full story of Operation Mincemeat.

When eight-year-old Daisy Mason vanishes from her family’s Oxford home during a costume party, Detective Inspector Adam Fawley knows that nine times out of ten, the offender is someone close to home.
And Daisy’s family is certainly strange, her mother is obsessed with keeping up appearances, while her father is cold and defensive under questioning.
And then there’s Daisy’s little brother, so withdrawn and uncommunicative . . .
DI Fawley works against the clock to find any trace of the little girl, but it’s as if she disappeared into thin air, no one saw anything; no one knows anything.
But everyone has an opinion, and everyone, it seems, has a secret to conceal.

Depraved Heart by Patricia Cornwell...

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange..

Dr. Kay Scarpetta is working a highly suspicious death scene in a historic home in Cambridge, Massachusetts when an emergency alert sounds on her phone. A video link lands in her text messages, immediately begins playing... and seems to be from her niece Lucy.
But how can it be? It’s clearly a surveillance film of Lucy taken almost twenty years ago.

As Scarpetta watches she comes to grips with frightening Secrets about her niece, whom she loves like a daughter.
That first clip and others sent soon after raise dangerous implications that increasingly isolate Scarpetta and leave her confused, alarmed, and not knowing where to turn.
She doesn’t know whom she can tell, not her FBI agent husband, Benton Wesley, or her investigative partner, Pete Marino. Not even Lucy.

Cornwell launches these unforgettable characters on an intensely psychological odyssey that includes the bizarre death of a Hollywood mogul’s daughter, wreckage on the bottom of the sea in the Bermuda Triangle, a grisly gift left in the back of a crime scene truck, and videos from the past that threaten to destroy Scarpetta’s entire world and everyone she loves.
The diabolical presence and singularly "depraved heart" behind what unfolds seems obvious, but strangely, not to the FBI. Certainly that’s the message they send when they start harassing Lucy and begin building a case that could send her to prison for the rest of her life.

In the latest novel in her bestselling series featuring medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Cornwell captivates readers again with the jolting twists, high-wire tension, and cutting-edge forensic detail for which she is renowned, proving yet again why she is the world’s number one bestselling crime writer.

Cambodia's Curse: The Modern History of a Troubled Land
by Joel Brinkley.....

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange..

A generation after the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia shows every sign of having overcome its history, the streets of Phnom Penh are paved; skyscrapers dot the skyline.
But under this façade lies a country still haunted by its years of terror.
Joel Brinkley won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting in Cambodia on the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime that killed one quarter of the nation's population during its years in power.
In 1992, the world came together to help pull the small nation out of the mire.
Cambodia became a United Nations protectorate, the first and only time the UN tried something so ambitious.
What did the new, democratically-elected government do with this unprecedented gift?

In 2008 and 2009, Brinkley returned to Cambodia to find out. He discovered a population in the grip of a venal government. He learned that one-third to one-half of Cambodians who lived through the Khmer Rouge era have P.T.S.D. and its afflictions are being passed to the next generation.
His extensive close-up reporting in Cambodia's Curse illuminates the country, its people, and the deep historical roots of its modern-day behavior.

Avenue of Mysteries by John Irving

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop - Book exchange..

John Irving returns to the themes that established him as one of our most admired and beloved authors in this absorbing novel of fate and memory.
As we grow older, most of all, in what we remember and what we dream, we live in the past. Sometimes, we live more vividly in the past than in the present.

As an older man, Juan Diego will take a trip to the Philippines, but what travels with him are his dreams and memories; he is most alive in his childhood and early adolescence in Mexico. “An aura of fate had marked him,” John Irving writes, of Juan Diego.
“The chain of events, the links in our lives - what leads us where we’re going, the courses we follow to our ends, what we don’t see coming, and what we do - all this can be mysterious, or simply unseen, or even obvious.”

Avenue of Mysteries is the story of what happens to Juan Diego in the Philippines, where what happened to him in the past, in Mexico - collides with his future.
