The Cinderella Murder by Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke.. . . .
@ Canterbury Tales Cafe - Bookshop - Book exchange - Guesthouse..
Television producer Laurie Moran is delighted when the pilot for her reality drama, Under Suspicion, is a success. Even more, the program, a cold case series that revisits unsolved crimes by recreating them with those affected, is off to a fantastic start when it helps solve an infamous murder in the very first episode. Now Laurie has the ideal case to feature in the next episode of Under Suspicion: the Cinderella Murder.
When Susan Dempsey, a beautiful and multi-talented UCLA student, was found dead, her murder raised numerous questions.
Why was her car parked miles from her body? Had she ever shown up for the acting audition she was due to attend at the home of an up-and-coming director? Why does Susan’s boyfriend want to avoid questions about their relationship? Was her disappearance connected to a controversial church that was active on campus? Was she close to her computer science professor because of her technological brilliance, or something more? And why was Susan missing one of her shoes when her body was discovered?
With the help of lawyer and Under Suspicion host Alex Buckley, Laurie knows the case will attract great ratings, especially when the former suspects include Hollywood’s elite and tech billionaires.
The suspense and drama are perfect for the silver screen but is Cinderella’s murderer ready for a close-up?

The Black Wolves of Boston by Wen Spencer offers an exciting and humorous tale for adults of a young werewolf and his unwilling acceptance of his heritage.
When ten classmates are torn to piece, only the unconscious Joshua survives, but powerful enemies want him for a blood sacrifice.
Spenser's werewolves are not the traditional ones of legends.
They are not ruled by the moon and, while strong, are not invincible.
They protect the world against monsters from a realm of chaos that would destroy the world of humans.
In particular, the wolves fight a group of Wickers, witches who use blood magic and are dedicated to destroying the werewolves.

Lies & the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair & Balanced Look at the Right by Al Franken..

Traded in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop *-* Book exchange... This book UK cost 12.00 - from us 160 baht - plus you receive 50% in credit off your next book when you have finished with it?

Al Franken, one of our savviest satirists (People), has been studying the rhetoric of the Right.
He has listened to their cries of slander, bias, and even treason.
He has examined the Bush administration's policies of squandering our surplus, ravaging the environment, and alienating the rest of the world.
He's even watched Fox News. A lot.
And, in this fair and balanced report, Al bravely and candidly exposes them all for what they are: liars. Lying, lying liars.
Al destroys the liberal media bias myth by doing what his targets seem incapable of: getting his facts straight. Using the Right's own words against them, he takes on the pundits, the politicians, and the issues, in the most talked about book of the year.

Timely, provocative, unfailingly honest, and always funny, Liessticks it to the most right-wing administration in memory, and to the right-wing media hacks who do its bidding.

Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie . . . .

@ Canterbury Tales Cafe - Bookshop - Book exchange -

With effortless grace, celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie illuminates a seminal moment in modern African history: Biafra's impassioned struggle to establish an independent republic in southeastern Nigeria during the late 1960's.
We experience this tumultuous decade alongside five unforgettable characters: Ugwu, a thirteen-year-old houseboy who works for Odenigbo, a university professor full of revolutionary zeal; Olanna, the professor’s beautiful young mistress who has abandoned her life in Lagos for a dusty town and her lover’s charm; and Richard, a shy young Englishman infatuated with Olanna’s willful twin sister Kainene. Half of a Yellow Sun is a tremendously evocative novel of the promise, hope, and disappointment of the Biafran war.

That is, until Detective Inspector John Rebus and DS Siobhan Clarke uncover evidence that a serial killer is on the loose ...
When Rebus also starts looking into the apparent suicide of an MP, he is abruptly warned off the case, not least because the G8 leaders have gathered in Scotland, and Rebus's bosses want him well out of the way.

Nothing Was the Same - by Kay Redfield Jamison...

@ Canterbury Tales Cafe - Bookshop - Book exchange -

From the internationally acclaimed author of An Unquiet Mind, an exquisite, haunting meditation on mortality, grief, and loss.
Perhaps no one but Kay Redfield Jamison, who combines the acute perceptions of a psychologist with a writerly elegance and passion, could bring such a delicate touch to the subject of losing a spouse to cancer.
In direct, straightforward, and at times strikingly lyrical prose, Jamison looks back at her relationship with her husband, Richard Wyatt, a renowned scientist who battled debilitating dyslexia to become one of the foremost experts on schizophrenia.
And with her characteristic honesty, candor, wit, and simplicity, she describes his death, her own long, difficult struggle with grief, and her efforts to distinguish grief from depression.
But she also recalls the great joy that Richard brought her during the nearly twenty years they had together.
Wryly humorous anecdotes mingle with bittersweet memories of a relationship that was passionate and loving if troubled on occasion by her manic-depressive (bipolar) illness, as Jamison reveals the ways in which her husband encouraged her to write openly about her mental illness and, through his courage and grace taught her to live fully.
A penetrating psychological study of grief viewed from deep inside the experience itself, Nothing Was the Same is also a deeply moving memoir by a superb writer.

Chasing the Monk's Shadow by Mishi Saran
@ Canterbury Tales Cafe - Bookshop - Book exchange -
In the seventh century AD, the Chinese monk Xuanzang (earlier spelt as Hiuen Tsang or Hsuan Tsang) set off on an epic journey to India to study Buddhist philosophy from the Indian masters.
Travelling along the Silk Road, through the desolate wastes of the Gobi desert and the icy passes of Central Asia, braving brigands and blizzards, Xuanzang finally reached India, where his spiritual quest took him to Buddhist holy places and monasteries throughout the subcontinent.
By the time he returned to China eighteen years later, carrying with him nearly 600 scriptures which he translated from Sanskrit into Chinese, Xuanzang had covered an astonishing 10,000 miles.
He also left a detailed record of his journey, which remains a valuable source of historical information on the regions he traversed.
Fourteen hundred years later, Mishi Saran follows in Xuanzang’s footsteps to the fabled oasis cities of China and Central Asia, and the Buddhist sites and now-vanished kingdoms in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan that Xuanzang wrote about.
Travelling seamlessly back and forth in time between the seventh century and the twenty-first, Saran uncovers the past with consummate skill even as she brings alive the present through her vivid and engaging descriptions of people and places.
Her gripping chronicle includes an extraordinary eyewitness account of Kabul under the Taliban regime, just one month before 9/11.
Running parallel to the account of her travels is the moving story of the author’s inner journey towards a new understanding of her roots and her identity.
With its riveting mix of lively reportage, high adventure, historical inquiry and personal memoir, this delightfully written book is a path-breaking travelogue.

There last week and it was like a bomb went off. The shelves are so overstocked and doubled up horizontally so you have to pull the front stack of books off and hold them so you can see what’s on the shelf behind them.  Big stacks of double-ups and triple-ups of books in the same section, think the most I saw was six copies of the same book.  Place is still murky as hell and hard to find anything.

Smith's investigation leads him to Fort Detrick, where a researcher, Dr. Laura Taylor, had been attempting to create a drug to wipe memory from soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome.
But Dr. Taylor's research was suspended almost a year ago, when she was placed in a mental institution. Now, if Smith doesn't figure out the brainwashing drug, and track down the kidnapped Nick Rendel, the kidnappers will soon have the power to carry out drone strikes anywhere in the world....
