Prepaid Mobile Phone SIM card for Australia & UK

Recommended Posts

My mum will soon be going on holiday from Perth Australia to the UK. She'll be spending her time in England, Scotland & Belfast. Before leaving Perth she'll be buying a mobile phone to use with pre-paid sim cards. She'll need to make sure the phone she buys in Australia is also compatible with UK sim cards, so what does she need to know & do about that?

When she arrives in London she'll need to buy a pre-paid sim, so what's the best value for her? (to make calls in UK & to Australia) where's the easiest places to buy a sim and pay for top ups? And will a sim for England also work OK in Scotland & Belfast?

Sorry if these questions seem a bit dumb but she's an old lady and I want to spell it out to her how to go about it all.

If she just wants to talk & text, then any cheap quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) phone will do.

If she wants a phone which can use 3G data, then Australia has different networks which use different combinations of 3G frequencies, and so she would need to know which network she is going to use in the UK, and get a compatible phone.

Your mom shouldn't have any problems with finding a sim card for her phone. Some of the most popular ones are o2 and vodafone. She can also use them in Scotland, that's not a problem. Sim cards are pretty cheap, she can also pick a tariff for calling abroad. All the information about the tariffs are on the provider's website. She'll have to activate it by text, it's really simple.
