With all the political protests taking place in Thailand is pattaya affected or not? Is business as usual? Are tourists targeted? I'm going for the first time at the end of may

Hi Rooney23 if I had flights booked for this weekend I wouldnt have a problem with flying out to Thailand and going straight to Pattaya. By all accounts there are no problems in Pattaya so you'll have a great holiday. The only thing I'll say is just be sensible and if you did see anything that didnt look OK just walk in the oppisate direction.

And I'm sure there'll be plenty of bar girls who would be more than willing to take care off you and make sure you didnt get into trouble....lol

I seem to have heard that the Thai government had declared a state of emergency in other areas apart from Bangkok and there have been some reports of clashes between rival sets of supporters in other areas of the country and I heard that this included Pattaya.

Supporters of the red and yellow shirt groups are not exclusive to Bangkok!

Pattaya is no longer safe

see sky news post

Just went through all three pages of that post (I assume it's the correct one as you didn't post a link) searching for every reference to Pattaya and saw nothing to say it's unsafe. What do you base this on?

Glyn.

Edit - This post

Currently at home until after the Wet Season. See you again in Sept.

Update - couldn't wait until Sept, booked for early July.

Pattaya is no longer safe

see sky news post

I have observed the way news companies, including the BBC, operate on many occasions in differing conflicts. Your statement does not reflect the truth, I and others live here, Pattaya at this moment is no more dangerous than it was 6 months ago, it is true to say that without the news we would not know there was anything going on.

The tragedy that is now Thailand breaks the heart of those of us that live here, we share that tragedy in that we have families and make our living here. So please things are hard enough without people jumping on the news bandwagon.

I know Cerberus lives there and all but while Pattaya may be safe at the moment that isnt guaranteed to hold. for a while it seems there was a road block

but even if it does the greater risk is flying in/out of BKK and making the trip from there to Patts

My buddy who lives there flat out told me stay home, said he is making plans to evac if need be, there are too many things that could make everything go south.

I do hope this passes soon and with no more bloodshed but that doesn't look like its going to be the case.

Dude, your "the sky is falling" attitude just may earn you the first "-10" reputation rating.

Hi XXXSouth, how are you?

Mate we each have our own "panic" button, it would seem your friends is on a hair trigger. There is absolutely nothing going on here in Pattaya, nor a sign that anything is about to. As for guarantees? there are none for anything, anywhere, go ask the victims of the Tsunami.

Right at this moment I am still far safer here than any inner city area of the majority of the big towns in the states. I have been out to eat with my lass most evenings, in the last 24hrs we have traveled the town from one end to the other and 20 kilometres in both directions, (Yes there is a reason for that, but not one I am prepared to speak about yet as it is very personal :D ).

There is nothing going on here in Pattaya!! other than your being at risk from desperate BG's seeking to pleasure you :)

Nothing to worry about in Pattaya at the moment. If things did turn sour in Pattaya (like red shirts leaving BKK and regrouping in Patts) then you can easily pack your bag and piss off to Phuket or Hua Hin or wherever.

honestly my concern isnt so much pattaya as getting to/from pattaya via BKK

The US State Department has issued a travel warning for Thailand

May 15, 2010

The Department of State warns U.S. citizens traveling to and residing in Thailand of ongoing political demonstrations and unrest in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Due to escalating violence in central Bangkok, including gunfire near the U.S. Embassy, demonstrations in Chiang Mai, and other incidents throughout Thailand, U.S. citizens should defer all travel to Bangkok and defer all non-essential travel to the rest of Thailand. The Department of State has authorized the departure of all non-emergency U.S. government personnel and eligible family members from Bangkok. This replaces the Travel Alert dated April 28, 2010, and is in response to updated information on increased violence and security concerns. The Department of State recommends against travel to Bangkok and non-essential travel to Thailand at this time.

For me, it just makes sense to wait

i personally think that in bkk the point 'its going to get worse before it gets better' has been and gone (sunday night) ... the armys general tactics now seem to be slowly defusing the situation, despite what all the mainstream media is saying, you have to look at all the reports from the street.

one report which cheered me up a bit was this one from the bbc .. not what they were saying but the video .. noticed how calm and orderly the checkpoint is ..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8688664.stm

plus all the pictures of a slowly calming situation emerging from this guy mingling with soldiers and red shirts ..

http://www.facebook.com/MichaelYonFanPage

the red shirts clearly are feeling the pressure and want to negotiate .. the govt holding out for dispersal of the rally first .. so long as the army maintain the calmness they are displaying right now fingers crossed they could be backing away from the abyss :)

So Cerebus/ people on ground in Pattaya/other provinces? watching news back here and it says Red shirt encampment has been raided and protesters arrested or allowed to leave...

Also, hearing that they have torched many malls, and pockets of arm resistence popping up else where throughout Bangkok City..TV and newspapers companies have been attacked. I wonder now- about the many other provinces-that were under emergency decree...Like Issan and to include even- Chonburi. Keep us informed- if anything springs up in the Pattaya area...What a mess. I hope this is over, but don't think so.-maybe just spreading out...Take Care...

If you are speaking from the airport to Pattaya and back, no problems at this time its as clear as a bell, so why even think of travelling the 30 Kilometres into bangkok and for what?

No-one can know what is going to happen, we can only say what we see at present and Pattaya is the same as always.

Talked to my friend

he said

xxx: brother, 5 days ago in BKK when I was there it wasnt safe. I cant IMAGINE how dangerous it really is right now

xxx: its BAD

xxx: cause pattaya is not on fire they think its ok

xxx: well, pattaya is under curfew and cops are on the streets in full force

xxx: NOTHING is open

xxx: we went out for food

xxx: nada

xxx: i took my press helmet to get past cops, its a ghost town

Bear in mind my buddy is NOT scared easily, he regularly visits Rio, Columbia, Venezuela, Cuba, Vietnam he has had machines guns held to his head and his hotel room stormed in Columbia

If he says stay home...I tend to believe him.
