England to play Thailand

Monday, 10 May, 2010

The FA announces historic fixture with Thailand in 2011.

The FA has today confirmed that England will travel to Thailand in June 2011 for a friendly international.

Following the European Championship qualifier with Switzerland on Saturday 4 June at Wembley, the Three Lions will make the journey to Southeast Asia prior to the end of the season.

The friendly, which will commemorate the 65th anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, will be the first ever meeting between the two countries at international level, and the historic fixture will continue a growing bond over recent years. In July 2008, Fabio Capello attended a coach education seminar in Thailand to aid the development of local coaches.

Thailand's manager is a familiar face to England supporters, former captain Bryan Robson who was capped 90 times by his country and scored 26 goals. Robson took over from another former England international, Peter Reid, last September.

The match will also build upon the incredible interest in English football that already exists in the region, due to the huge impact of the Premier League.

In January of this year Thailand played host to Denmark and Poland in a friendly tournament, before narrowly missing out on qualification for the Asia Cup in March when they were defeated by a single goal by Iran.

At the end of this month, Thailand will travel to Cape Town to face South Africa as they prepare to host the World Cup Finals for the first time.

Note to self: avoid all areas in BKK likely to be infested by soccer hooligans, i.e. fight-happy thugs and oiks masquerading as genuine football fans.

A couple of years back I witnessed Germany's most shameful-ever football humiliation.

National anthems were played before the match, and when it was all over the official scoreboard read

Cambodia 8 Germany 0.

At best they looked like a German village team ... make that a pub team from the smallest of German villages. Most of their guys were bald and umpteen kilos overweight, and they were all dripping and wilting from the heat after the first minute.

There was a huge crowd of gleeful locals, and as far as they were concerned they'd just knocked off Germany.

As someone who has travelled the world watching England, the amount of times I've read things like that is countless. I remember before the World Cup in Japan there were stories in the press we were going to rape the female population of Tokyo and kill more people than the atom bomb. I spent a month in Japan, toured it from top to bottom, handed out badges and pictures of David Beckham, The locals loved the England fans, they clapped us out of the stadiums and mobbed us whereever we went. In South Africa in 2003 at the friendly in Durban we organised trips to schools in some of the townships and handed out football shirts from most league clubs, and played football with the kids. Same in Albania and many other countries, we even organised beach cleaning in Portugal as well as BBQ's. As for oiks, something tells me you're probably happier playing with odd shaped balls rather than footballs.

Quality.

I hope I can be over there for that one.

I doubt there will be any problems for a friendly in a city like BKK.

I have heard today that as Thailand didn't vote for England 2018 bid the game has been called off by the English FA.

Thailand was one of the 7 'confirmed' votes England thought were in the bag.

Instead Sepp Blatter rigged the Votes to line his own pockets.

Yeah, called off as Thailand backtracked (lied) on the deal to support England's 2018 bid. Well that's the rumour anyway.

Rubbish.

The Sun names the 7, no Thai involved

And you believe what you read in The Sun???? Plenty of other reports refer to the Thai vote. The Thai representative is called Worawi Makudi.

Apologies, but this will be seen as a real snub, was not the match in honor of HRH

the ultimate snub perhaps is letting the bid team believe that they were so close to winning the bid for 2018 that it was worthwhile roping in the future king of england AND the prime minister to win over the last few undecided votes!

Maybe 7 or 8 years ago Arsenal played a friendly in Bangkok against the Thai national team. The Thais won because the Gooners had been out getting sh*tfaced the night before. :)

Its a shame the match is now off. It was a great excuse for many of my married mates to go Thailand.

But the real reason this game was arranged was to secure a World Cup vote.

Seems fair enough to me. If a deal is brokered and one party reneges on their end of the trade they should expect

the other party to withdraw any benefits offered in the deal. There would be no benefit of an england national side to travel to thailand. Club team maybe for promotional reasons.

Yeah..i didnt think a national team would come to Thailand to play..unless it was part of a tournament.

I seen Chelsa in Korea, back in 2006/2007 timeframe..playing against Seoul of the K-league. One of the reason chelsa was there...was because of the main sponsors being a Korean company(Samsung). Not sure how the Thai league is..never seen any of the games. In Korea K-league is huge. It would have been cool if that news was true about england traveling to Thailand...i probably would have bought tickets for it...bars, girls, beer, and english futbol..wow..it would have been awesome!!

Despite the fact that England may have reason to feel betrayed over World Cup promises I think that the Thai people will take the cancellation to heart. That match could have gone some way to restoring the high position they held in their hearts for the English, that seems to be on the decline lately.

I remember when Queen Elizabeth 2 was in Thailand in the 90's. The Thais had banners every 100m over the main express ways celebrating the English Queen and Thai King. I was stopped by the Thai police while she was there and for some reason they started to search my vehicle. They asked where I was from and as soon as I said England they stopped the search, said "Queen Elizabeth", saluted me then smiled and waved me on. My point is that Thais take this kind of thing to heart and they love football almost as much as royalty.

The truth is immortal but people who speak it aren't - Thai proverb

Im gutted the game is off & can understand the Thai people feeling the same. But the English sent in the big guns to win this. Football hero, Royalty & Prime Minister.

I suppose the English FA feel like they have lost face over this, which the Thais would fully understand if the same happened to them!
