World Cup 2010

whitespider - RIP

Recommended Posts

I was chatting to the manager of The Camel this week and he told me some bad news for those of us for whom the WC is an important event.

UBC have not bought rights - period.

SS1, SS2 and SS3 have full rights but this week blocked their coverage to Thailand due to certain cable companies not paying up. Of these Sophon was (allegedly) illegally broadcasting these Sports channels.

This leaves us with one or (some days) two Thai Channels showing just one or two games a day. Not only is the coverage crap but in the early stages they will only be screening half the games.

Its likely they will choose to show all the England games but I, for one, like to watch al the games and for the non English visitors its going to be tough to see your team playing.

I STRESS this is currently unconfirmed but he seemed fairly sure. Any bar owners heard anything or can confirm the S channels are now blocked or not?

The World Cup is being heavily advertised in the latest Truevisions programme guide, but might be in HD only. Another thread on another forum (Live) states that it will be available on non-HD Truevisions. But TIT so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I have Supersports through DSTV (Multichoice Africa) and, as of now, it's still up and running. There have been unconfirmed rumors about them ceasing to transmit on C-band at the end of the month but we'll just have to wait and see. Critically, there doesn't appear to be any formal announcement from the company that C-band transmissions will be discontinued.

As for TrueSport HD - you'll have to get in the queue to get your equipment sorted and pay the extra cash .....

"Two new high-definition (HD) channels from TrueVisions allow owners of large-screen LCD and plasma TVs to really make the most of them. True Sport HD and HBO HD are broadcast on Channel 111 and 112 respectively for satellite subscribers.

TrueVisions had test runs in March for selected users and officially launched the channels last month.

Gold and Platinum subscribers can get the HD package for Bt290 per month. Their set-top boxes and satellite receivers will be enabled for decoding at no extra charge. If you have a set-top box and haven't already paid the deposit fee, though, have Bt4,000 ready.

The broadcasts are in 16:9 widescreen format at a resolution of 1080i, one knot lower than full 1080p HD. The number refers to the horizontal lines displayed, the "i" stands for "interlaced scanning" of the pictures, and "p" is for "progressive scanning".

TrueVisions broadcasts have long been 480i in the 4:3 format, which is still all right for cathode-ray tube monitors, but on LCD and plasma TVs the resolution isn't high enough, resulting in poor images.

The 4:3 pictures are also distorted on 16:9-aspect-ratio TVs, making people look shorter or fatter because of distortion at the sides.

The 1080i broadcasts at 16:9 solve these problems. The images are impressively sharp, especially when you flip to a lower-aspect channel to compare.

True Sport HD has the licence to broadcast this year's World Cup, Premier League, PGA golf and American football, all in HD".

I'm glad i'm not the only one. I have TMN cable which should have supersport 1/2/3, but for the last 4 days ss3 has gone replaced by ss blitz which shows sky sports. As for ss2 this comes and goes , when there is live 20/20 cricket it goes. When no live sport it comes back. Not only that i have lost m/net 2 movie ch and sky news.

So to me it looks as if the only way to watch the world cup will be on the thai tv channels. I have ubc as well but we have to wait and see if they showing them.

So not much to look forward to, plus the best games are mostly 1.30 in the morning.

Interesting; thanks for posting. What are the chances of Truevisions (why do some still keep calling them UBC?) broadcasting the World Cup games in non-HD on their regular Platinum/Gold channels?

This might be true.

The word is that Australian Network have apparently lost all rights to SANZAR rugby after this year, and the Saffa channels have promised to clean up their act and not allow transmissions to this area, denying us any rugby access either at home or in a bar from 2011 onwards.

let's hope they sort this out, one of the reasons for my upcoming trip is watching the World Cup in Thailand. I can't imagine a football mad country like thailand not showing the games (especially in Pattaya where a lot of falangs will be bringing income to bars who show the games)...

Trust me, it's paradise. This is where the hungry come to feed.

For mine is a generation that circles the globe and searches for something we haven't tried before.

So never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay the welcome.

Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience. And if it hurts, you know what? It's probably worth it.

Dam!

Maybe its just a negotiating position to get the other guys to pay up or play ball.

I suspect someone will find a way somehow.

The World Cup is definitely on TV in Thailand. Channels 3 & 7 have joint "free to air" rights, but broadcasts may not have an English language commentary soundtrack. Truevisions appear to have HD coverage which should have an English commentary soundtrack, but there is still some question about how widely available their HD channels will be. The South African satellite channel that is usually a good source of sports coverage may no longer be available.

if a bar is showing the WC on True channel 3/7 they can change the language to english so in theory it should not be a problem

sounds like we'll be fine, don't really need the commentary for most matches...

I also not really need commentary...

The only thing I concern about is the 24th of June...

Will bars show The Netherlands versus Cameroon (I really hope so), or will they show Denmark - Japan (I really not hope so)?

I think people from most other countries (like England, Germany, France) like the style how Holland plays, and because of its big names of players, so probably the Dutch match will be on (I suggest, and I also recommend the bar owners).

Where is the best place to watch the World Cup matches?

Somewhere with big screens and nice atmosphere. No worries about price of drinks.
