Cycling in Pattaya area

Can anyone give any concrete leads as to where one may rent bicycles, both standard of off road bikes? This for "real" training.

And suggestions as where to go for training?

Thank you

a few places in soi buakaow to buy second hand bikes, theres a shop that sells everything from bikes to tvs to radios, follow soi buakaow, past soi honey, heading away from Walking Street, its about half a mile on the right hand side. when you come to the end of your stay, sell the bike on again! All the places i found for renting bikes were either dangerous or sold out. bought a brand new bike in the end for 3000 baht in trapasit road towards jomtien, used it for 2 months and sold it again at the end! just as good as renting in my opinion.

Sounds like a good idea.

If you want a good bicycle you'll have to spend a little more money.

Most bicycles you find in Department stores are junk. Cheap but junk.

The best bicycles stores/shops are on Thepprasit Road.

As far as riding/training goes Phra Tamnak Hill is great if you mountain bike.

Best times to ride a bicycle in Pattaya is early morning before the traffic goes crazy.

Have fun.

I hope it works out mate.

There is a lot of pattaya I would not go near on a bike.

Crazy driving, motorbikes going the wrong way.

Pissed up predestrians.

wild dogs.

Plus the pollution.

Maybe jontien is better?

Budda hill sounds a good idea.

You don't happen to know the name of this place? I am seriously wanting a bike while I am in Pattaya. I hate motorbikes after going headfirst over the handlebars of one so pedal power is all I use these days when I am on two wheels. :D

There is a great bike shop on SukRd. It has everything from cheap but decent bikes to the high end mountain bikes. It is on the left hand side of the road if you are heading south. You will see the True tv shop. It is about 100 meters before that. I have bought a few bikes from there over the years.

For actual cycling i would recommend staying on the darkside because there is less traffic once you go further east from the railway line, there is loads of places to stop for a drink and get something to eat as well as loads of places to go off road if that is your thing.

Went to the zoo today. Spent ages at the camel enclosure, looking at their toes. They look nothing like a fanny. Disappointing.

I lived on pratumnak hill - rode from lighthouse to view lookout, and other sois down to water then back to peak.

Fairly safe in the mornings. Found the locals to be very respectful of the push-bike.

Would not take it on 2nd rd though..

And rode all over Phuket without problem...

something to be worried about if you plan on riding a bicycle here in pattaya..

I recently moved to pattaya. and I like riding bicycles. so, I did just that.

..guess what I found out - THE HARD WAY?

some of the streets here have rain gutters where the railings are spaced about 1.5 inches apart. get the picture? it wouldn't be so bad if the railings were perpendicular to the road. but yeah. they are PARALLEL to the road.

CRAZY TO SAY THE LEAST!

if you have a mountain bike, you may be ok. but for those of you with street bikes with the narrow tires, or the foldables like what I have, BEWARE!

I know this to be the truth because I actually crashed my bike on one of these rain gutters over near the big C - north side. this happened about 2 weeks ago. ..there I was riding my bike having a great time going at a fast clip when up the road about 20 feet ahead of me, I noticed this ODD rain gutter. I realized the danger a little too late. tried to avoid the damn thing. and crashed off to the side of it. my bike was not damaged. but I got this big bump on my leg from the crash. ..when I got up, this jerk of a motorcycle driver who was lounging on the side of the road laughed at me. asshole.

I wonder if anybody ever got killed because of these rain gutter? whoever puts those rain gutters in certainly doesn't care. whoever it was probably is only thinking of how it will stop people with tires less than 1.5 inches wide from riding down their street. talk about clueless.

criminal negligence.

A good place to rent a mountain bike and try out cycling is the Timbo Restaurant on the ground floor of the Jomtien Condo (About half a mile from the Dongtan Police Station on Jomtien Beach Road - there is a Family Mart at the entrance). They have decent bikes for 100 baht per day, with lower rates for longer periods. There is even a cycling club based there and the members go for longer rides every Sunday morning. About 60 Km to the quiet roads on the Dark Side in the vicinity of the Buddha Mountain - Great excercise if you are into that.

Jomtien Cycling Club is in Jomtien Beach Condominium, which is down the beach road from Dongtan corner a couple of clicks. It is next door to Villa Navin and inside the condominium comlex you will find the club, to the left Timbo's restaurant at the entrance to S2 building.

You can hire mountain bikes on daily or monthly rates and the club rides together 3 days a week with a long ride 50 - 80 k on Sunday. Start time is 6.30 am from outside Timbo's and the ride takes in some pretty testing hills.

Weekday rides are around the Pratumnak area which also has some good hills. The ride starts at 7.30 and and is approx 20-30 k. All rides are planned to finish by 9.30 so as to avoid the heat.
