british foreign office

Earlier today the british foreign office has issued an update advising it's nationals against all but essential travel to all parts of thailand due to what they say is an increasing threat of violence to other parts of the country.

They go on to say the situation is changing daily and anyone thinking of travelling there or people already there or living there should monitor it's website regulary to keep an eye on any further developments but also stress that the airport is entirely safe and in no way are any foreign nationals are being targeted.

What a bummer eight days till wheels up fingers crossed and as i know everyone over there at the moment will do...Keep an eye on things and stay safe.

Cheers

Mac

It'll be interesting to hear from addicts who are flying in and out of Thailand over the next few days.

(1) Addicts traveling from Pattaya to the airport at the end of there trip

(2) Addicts arriving in BKK and going straight to Pattaya

Did there trips seem the same as normal.

Or did they notice any unusual activity by the thais.

For example did they notice any protestors??

If so did the addicts feel nervous or did they feel safe

At the moment yep... i think the flight situation should be ok subject to developments of course not sure about travel insurance though as we have been advised to stay away and any claims arising from civil unrest or war etc are often not covered so i guess we will just have to check our terms and conditions

For many of us i reckon a trip to patts could be classed as essential :Drunk1:

Latest from the FCO website:

This advice does not apply to passengers transiting Bangkok airport on their way to foreign destinations

Suvarnabhumi airport is operating as normal. The route to the airport from Bangkok city remains open.

same here we're due to fly on 15th may and we're still gonna go unless the airports closed. does anyone know if we can still get travel insurance?

it seems like this always happens round the time we go, in 2008 we landed in bangkok to find phuketa irport was closed due to the protestors and spent 12hrs in a taxi to get there. its all part of the experience

We have been collecting guys from the airport, no problem either with the girls on their way into the airport or the journey back to Pattaya. Our next collection is today, our last was yesterday!

I cannot speak with regards to going into Bangkok, coming to Pattaya you will notice less that you do in your own country, if anything at all!

The key word here is "essential". What could be more essential than seeing bargirls in Pattaya?

I have been writing almost daily to the FO via e-mail, Twitter (yes they do have an address, look it up under foreign office, amazingly) and their own website asking when they will impose the same advice on Greece as they now have for Thailand. The answer, a resounding and earth shattering silence, nada, not a word, nothing. My guess is that they are not allowed to 'ban' a fellow EU state. That or the people who make the decisions are simply ignorant. Come to think of it, both are proabably true.

My advice is that we all keep pestering them until the advisory is removed.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing at least twice.

FCO advice changed yesterday.

•We advise against all but essential travel to Bangkok, in view of the continued political unrest in the city.

•You should exercise caution, especially in the northern provinces and Pattaya. The political situation is unpredictable and throughout Thailand there is a continued risk that protests may result in violent disturbances. Travellers are advised to avoid political demonstrations and large gatherings.

•We advise against all travel to the Preah Vihear (Khaoi Pra Viharn in Thai) temple area, due to violence in the area. See the Local Travel section of this Travel Advice.

•We advise against all but essential travel to, or through, the far southern provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla, due to the insurgency in these areas. See the Terrorism / Security section of this Travel Advice.
